What is the Traditional 8th Anniversary Gift?

I’m a big fan of choosing gifts that match the traditional type for each anniversary. However I’m sometimes surprised by how tricky it can be to find accurate information!
For example, when searching for the term 8th year anniversary gifts on Google, you will find a lot of results listing the traditional 8th anniversary gift as bronze and pottery and the the modern gift as linen/lace.

So as we did with the 4th year anniversary post, we dug a little deeper and used our go to source information — the fabulous Blue Book of Social Usage by Emily Post.
The origins of the current gift conventions date to 1937. Before that, only the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th, and 75th anniversaries had an associated gift. In 1937, the American National Retail Jeweler Association (now known as Jewelers of America as a result of an organizational merger) introduced an expanded list of gifts.
The revamped list gave a gift for each year up to the 25th, and then for every fifth anniversary after that, which is still widely used today. If you look at a book written by Emily Post, an American writer from the earliest 20th century, she states that the eighth year wedding anniversary gift is in fact electrical appliances.

That’s why we’re going with electrical goodies. That said, if pottery and bronze take your fancy, those will work too.
