Swimming with Dolphins in Roatan
Animal encounters are a popular option for island adventures, and Roatan is no exception. Whether you want a dolphin kiss or a sloth cuddle, this island can provide. Your honeymoon doesn’t have to be super adventurous to meet such animals. You can visit some rescue and rehabilitation centers to make sure you support the organizations who are saving animals and treating them well.
Remember: Not all animal encounters are equal! It can be hard to determine which places treat animals well. Thankfully, there has been a global backlash against animal abuse for tourism in recent years. We are 100% in favor of animal rights.
Anthony’s Key Resort (AKR) in Roatan is a place you can feel comfortable supporting. At AKR, you can:
- Swim with a resident pod of wild dolphins
- Choose to snorkel or scuba dive with them
- Meet and greet whilst receiving dolphin kisses and fabulous photo ops!
These dolphins are free to come and go as they please. The nearby homes often have the pod swim by to say hello and divers all around the northwestern shore see these dolphins regularly. Sometimes, they swim along with the dive boats, while other times they show up on a scuba dive to see what the humans are doing.
The Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) is also based at AKR, in case you have a deeper interest in learning more about the marine world.
Tip: AKR has a sister location, called Maya Key, just outside of Coxen Hole. Many injured animals are brought there by the Roatan Marine Park so they can be rehabilitated and returned to the wild. Maya Key is a popular cruise ship tourist location, but you can visit if you book in advance.
