Common Wedding Invitation FAQ
Assuming you’re not having a destination wedding, the rule of thumb is six to eight weeks before the big day. This way, if your guests need to make travel arrangements, they’ll have plenty of time to clear their schedule and plan it out.
If you are having a destination wedding, do your guests a favor and send out save-the-dates six to eight months before the wedding. Then send out the wedding invitations three months before your wedding date with the details. That’ll get the planning ball rolling early enough for everyone to prepare (and avoid overpaying for crazy last-minute travel rates).
Traditional wedding planning guidelines suggest the RSVP deadline should be two to three weeks before your wedding day. We happen to think it should be more like three to four for the sake of your sanity, but that’s just us.
Regardless of what you choose, make sure you have plenty of time to get your seating chart and menu finalized and give a headcount to the caterers and venue.
Your wedding website info can go on either your save-the-dates or your invitations. One line is all you really need (www.jackandjill.com, for example). Still, an insert included with your invitations inviting your guests to visit your website for more information is nice, too. Especially if you’re planning to use the website for gathering RSVPs and communicating with your guests.
Your registry information is best left on your wedding website or your wedding shower invites (if you’re having one). We’ve seen some people choose to include it on their wedding invites or save-the-dates, but that just seems kinda presumptuous. Again, maybe that’s just us.
You’d be doing your guests a disservice if you didn’t include a quick note on your invitations about the dress code. (No one wants to be the one to show up utterly over or underdressed!)
Your dress code info goes best on the lower right corner or at the bottom of the invitation with a small asterisk. A simple “casual attire suggested” or “cocktail attire” should do the trick. Or even something like “casual, comfortable attire encouraged” would work if you’re throwing a backyard barbeque soiree.
If your wedding invitation is too jam-packed with other important info, you can always list the dress code on your wedding website (Minted makes that nice and easy!).
Telling your guests who not to bring is always a little cringe-worthy (or a lot), but the answer to this one is actually pretty simple.
Name the guest you’re inviting on the RSVP. Period. Don’t include “and guest” or “plus one” or “and family” or anything like that. That way, there’s no ambiguity about who the invitation is extended to.

See? Easy peasy. If you’re inviting a couple or family, list all of their names and an extra line with “Number Attending: _____.”
Suppose you’re not sure your guests will take the hint. In that case, you can always delicately but directly state on the invitation that plus ones aren’t invited.
For example:
“We kindly ask our guests to please restrict the members of your party to those listed on your RSVP. Our sincerest apologies; resources limit the number of guests we can accommodate right now, but we hope to get together with everyone very soon!”
~or~
“Due to budget/space constraints, we must limit our guests to those listed on the RSVP.”
If you’d like your guests to know your wedding is an adults-only affair, try something like this on your invitation:
“Please join us for an adults-only reception immediately following the ceremony.”
~or~
“While we adore your kids, our chosen venue is unable to accommodate children. We invite you to use this as the perfect opportunity to take the night off!”
