After the Wedding Checklist: 16 Things To Do and When To Do Them

Does your to-do list conclude with the reception? Well, as much as I would love to tell you that it should, your obligations don’t end when the last guest walks out.

After the big day, there are still a few crucial tasks brides and grooms need to take care of, from settling up with vendors to writing heartfelt thank you notes.

Essential items, like formally changing your name (if you choose to do so), aren’t difficult to remember. But you won’t want to overlook any of the small things, such as freezing your wedding cake for your anniversary or preserving your wedding dress.

We suggest compiling your post-wedding checklist now, so you’ll remember to dot your I’s and cross your T’s after the “I do’s”!

Immediate To-Dos

Your guests will understand if your thank-you cards arrive a week or two late – newlyweds deserve to honeymoon, after all!

Unfortunately, your vendors aren’t likely to be as accommodating if you don’t return your rentals ASAP. Here’s a breakdown of everything you will need to complete immediately post-wedding.

Tip & Pay Your Vendors (ASAP)

This is a significant priority that you can’t overlook. Wedded bliss likely won’t be so blissful if you have collections calling. Be sure that you have fully paid your vendor expenses as soon as possible after your wedding.

This is especially true if you plan to go on your honeymoon and unplug from the rest of the world. Ensuring vendors have been appropriately tipped is essential too! Thankfully, most vendors require payment in full just before the event, but it doesn’t hurt to double-check.

If you are worried about this getting done between the wedding and the honeymoon, you can always put one of your parents or even the trusted maid of honor or best man in charge of handing out the checks while you jet off into the sunset.

Return Any Rentals (ASAP)

It can be challenging to keep track of what’s been rented, borrowed, and bought. Having a list can be helpful. If you have rented an item, it likely came with a due date for return. Before you take off to a tropical destination or settle into your new married life, be sure to return everything you’ve been loaned. This can include:

  • tuxedos
  • chairs
  • tablecloths and linens
  • centerpieces
  • décor

If you’ve borrowed the items from a friend or family, you probably have a bit more leeway. Again, enlisting a trusted friend or family member to help you with the returns is a tremendous help – especially if they are the same person who picked up the rentals in the first place!

Freeze Your Wedding Cake (1-2 days post-wedding)

Tradition says that couples should freeze the top tier of the wedding cake to enjoy it on their first anniversary. I wish I could have frozen the whole thing and enjoyed it every day for a year! But I digress.

If you want to take part in this tradition, expediency is critical. Decadent wedding cakes can spoil, and that delectable frosting will melt. Try to freeze the top tier of your cake as quickly as possible, but certainly within one to two days post-wedding. It’s a good idea to look up instructions on exactly how to freeze your confection if you want it to last a full 365 days and still taste delicious.

Send Thank You Cards (1-2 weeks post-wedding)

Hopefully, your guests understand that you two deserve some time as the new Mr. & Mrs. Nevertheless, sending thank you cards is expected and greatly appreciated. Within a few weeks of your ceremony, it’s a good idea to get your cards in the mail. Experts recommend having your cards posted three months after the wedding at the very latest.

While sending a virtual thank you is fine, we love beautiful stationery with a heartfelt message. Therefore, you’ll want to keep in mind how long it will take you to write, stuff, and address all your thank-yous when considering your to-do timeline.

Deposit Monetary Wedding Gifts (1-2 weeks post-wedding)

There isn’t a hard and fast deadline as to when you need to cash in, but to help move the rest of your post-wedding checklist along, you might not want to wait. You may need to buy those last few unpurchased wedding registry items!

Not to mention, some… older members of your family who still balance a physical checkbook may be waiting for you to cash the check, and may continue to send reminders until you do. (Not spoken from experience or anything…)

When you return from your honeymoon, it’s a good idea to head to the bank, usually around two weeks after the wedding. This to-do can be tricky, depending on who the checks are written to and whether or not you have already changed your name. If you need to wait to get your accounts in order, just carefully organize and store your gifts so nothing gets lost.

Important Stuff

Take a breath, but don’t fully relax – these items are important but not immediate. Still, failing to do them could cause quite a few problems, so don’t brush them aside!

Complete and Finalize Your Marriage License (3 – 4 weeks post-wedding)

This first one isn’t even your responsibility (woohoo!), but sadly, you’re not entirely off the hook. It is often the officiant’s job to take the completed marriage license to the county clerk after the ceremony. Most couples don’t have a problem with their officiant following through, but you can never be too careful.

You should receive a copy of your marriage license in the mail in a few weeks. Though, in some circumstances, you may need to pick it up in person. You’ll need these copies for changing your Social Security, insurance, and more. You can always get more in the future, but we recommend requesting three copies to start.

Begin the Name Change Process, if you desire (3-4 weeks post-wedding)

Many couples choose to change the bride’s last name. However, this isn’t the standard anymore! Some couples hyphenate their names, have the groom take the bride’s name, or choose to leave everything as is.

If you do decide to make any changes, you’ll need to go through a somewhat long and definitely dull process. There are companies, like newlynamed.com, that will do this for you (thank goodness!), or you can save the money and apply on your own. Unfortunately, changing your name isn’t as easy as filling out a form and sending it off.

You’ll need to apply at each government agency and company that uses your name for official purposes. That includes Social Security, your driver’s license, passport, bank accounts, insurance, and most likely your work. It can be beneficial to create a list of everywhere that uses your legal name before beginning the process.

Some places might allow you to mail in the forms, while others require you to appear in person. You’ll need a variety of documents, including those marriage certificate copies you should have gathered in the post-wedding list item before this!

This process can be a pain, but hopefully, you’ll only have to go through it once! Pro-tip: make sure your honeymoon tickets match your passport. Don’t change your passport until post-trip if you purchased your airline tickets and reservations with your maiden name.

Update Medical Insurance (1-2 months post-wedding)

If you and your spouse plan on using only one insurance plan, you’ll need to update it. It’s easier to make this change after all the name corrections have been taken care of.

For many insurance plans, you’ll have 30 days after your qualifying life event (marriage, in this case) to make any changes to your plan. If you are adding your new spouse to your plan, note that you will likely need to show a copy of the marriage certificate.

Along with updating your medical insurance, you might want to file your new insurance with your medical offices. Taking care of these things from the get-go can make future appointments much smoother.

Set Up a Joint Bank Account (1 – 2 months post-wedding)

You don’t have to share any more finances than you did pre-wedding. Yet, most couples like to have at minimum one shared account, typically a savings account. You will probably need to visit your bank with all your new documents to change financial accounts.

This is another step that is best completed after your name change. Additionally, you and your partner should plan on attending together. Most banks only allow a member to be added to an account with the account holder present.

Complete Minor Contact Changes (2 – 4 months)

Some of these you’ll discover long after your wedding. Because many changes aren’t urgent, you don’t need to fret too much. If you still have your mom as your emergency contact, consider updating it to reflect your partner. This applies to your work, doctor’s office, and even your gym. There’s something slightly delightful about updating all your information to “Mrs.” and making your primary next of kin your beloved spouse!

Also, if you didn’t live together pre-wedding and you’re moving into a new home after the “I do’s,” you should probably update your mailing address. This can be a bit tricky, as more places than you think are likely to have this address on file. However, it’s vital to receive bills and necessary documents, so don’t wait too long with this task.

Fun Stuff

Finally, on to the fun stuff! While this stuff is certainly more pleasant than many other tasks, it doesn’t make them less important. Primarily because time is of the essence for a few of these items.

Preserve Your Bouquet (ASAP)

Yes, you may only be drying flowers, but there is still no time to waste! Regardless of how you plan to preserve your bouquet, starting when your flowers are as fresh as possible is key. This will keep their colors brighter and prevent them from breaking.

One way to preserve your bouquet is with the age-old method of drying. You can hang your blooms upside down in a cool, dark, and dry place for about one to two weeks. After this, they should be thoroughly dried and able to be used as a décor arrangement or place them in a shadowbox. Or, you could DIY dry them in silicone beads. This helps draw out the water and leave your bouquet looking fresher, more vibrant, and less dry.

Some couples choose alternative methods of making their flowers into a keepsake. You could have a few petals or small blooms preserved in an acrylic piece of jewelry, press the flowers in a notebook, or have them professionally preserved by a company like keepsakefloral.com.

Preserve Your Wedding Dress (1 – 2 months post-wedding)

The sooner you can preserve your dress, the better. Many experts advise that you shouldn’t wait longer than six weeks. The key to successful preservation is preparation. Your gown needs to be cleaned first to rid it of all the makeup, sweat, and possibly spilled champagne accumulated on your big day. Then, it should either be immediately preserved or stored in a cool, dark, dry place until you’re ready.

There are online companies who you can send your dress for professional preservation. Or, you can order a kit and DIY your gown storage at home. Either method usually keeps your beautiful dress clean, dry, and safely tucked away until you are ready to enjoy it again (or let someone else enjoy it)!

Don’t forget your veil either. As treasured keepsakes, any accessories you want to hold onto should be professionally cleaned and preserved.

Just married sign and cans attached

Create a Wedding Album (4 – 6 months post-wedding)

There are so many ways to create a wedding album these days! We highly suggest saving yourself hours of time and using a professional company. You can be as involved or hands-off as you desire.

Shutterfly, Mixbook, and Artifact Uprising offer various services that let you upload photos, design, decorate, and personalize your own wedding album (or let their experts do it for you!). You can keep it digital or have it printed when you’re done.

Even if this task takes you a bit of time to get around to, reliving your wedding day never gets old.

Return Duplicates and Clean Up Your Registry (4 – 6 months post-wedding)

Most retailers, thankfully, have a pretty long return window for gift returns. This means you shouldn’t have to worry too much about getting rid of all those duplicate wedding gifts. While you’re double-checking your receipts, consider taking a second look at your registry.

If any items you had your heart set on have been left, you might consider purchasing them yourself. Maybe using some of those wedding funds you deposited earlier!

Word to the wise: if you don’t think you’ll use an item, it is best to return it. Five years post-wedding, my husband and I discovered a great Kitchen Aid mixer that we had never used nor needed. Instead of buying a new mixer, we decided to give the found one a go. It had a terrible wobble due to a manufacturer’s error, much to our surprise. Needless to say, it was long out of warranty. I wish I would have more carefully gone through our gifts instead of packing them away after the wedding!

Leave Your Vendors Reviews (3 – 6 months post-wedding)

We love this thoughtful post-wedding checklist item. It’s a sweet way to share the love from your wedding day. If you have a vendor you were genuinely thankful for, consider leaving them a kind review on social media.

Alternatively, if you had a vendor you weren’t crazy about, you can always offer some criticism. Online reviews are how most of our population chooses who to do business with. If a terrible experience significantly impacted your wedding day, consider letting other brides know so they don’t make the same mistake.

Send Your Parents and In-Laws a Personal Gift (2 – 4 months post-wedding)

If your parents and in-laws are like the majority of moms and dads, they likely provided you with tons of help with the wedding. Whether they paid for a significant chunk or stayed up long hours making sure everything was perfect, a personalized gift is a great way to recognize their efforts.

A pretty yet practical gift is a great choice! We love personalized wine or whiskey glasses as well as customized cutting boards. Alternatively, you could treat them to a delicious gift basket or indulgent spa box to thank them for their love, support, and contributions.

Post Wedding FAQ

What should you do the day after your wedding?

We’ve tried to put a lot of helpful timelines in this article, but it can still be a bit overwhelming. The day after your wedding, take a deep breath and enjoy the sensation of waking up beside your new spouse!

Then, ensure you’ve checked off those “immediate” items. This usually includes paying and tipping your vendors, returning rentals, and not missing your flight for your honeymoon!

How do you get over the post-wedding blues?

If you find yourself having a hard time getting motivated to accomplish post-wedding to-do’s and feeling a little deflated, know that the post-wedding blues are a real thing. Sometimes we trade all that wedding stress for sadness, which can be a bit shocking. However, it can be normal to experience a low or letdown period after an extreme high, like the excitement of getting married.

If you think you have the post-wedding blues, let your spouse know. Talk to your friends and family if you feel comfortable, or reach out for professional help. Thinking about all the things you have to look forward to, like a new set of family members and small daily moments you get to share with your partner, can help you see the positive side again. Hopefully, you’ll shift away from wistful and back to blissful soon!

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage…

Then comes a few post-wedding checklist items that will help ensure things get off to a smooth start. Thankfully, there aren’t many things that need to be done immediately after your wedding, though a handful of to-dos are more crucial than others.

If you can enlist friends or family members from your wedding party to help, it can make a big difference. Finding services that can perform specific tasks for you, like preserving your gown or changing your name, can also help relieve some stress.

You’ve accomplished a lot on your journey to the altar. Taking care of a few things afterward is like crossing the finish line!

Do I Even Need A Wedding Party?

Thaaaaat all depends upon how big your shindig will be.

Suppose you’re hosting a cute micro wedding in the backyard or an intimate gathering at a small venue? In that case, you may not need ushers and attendants and whatnot.

wedding party roles

You may have already decided to keep the wedding party short and sweet or avoid one altogether, and that’s A-Okay. The purpose of a wedding party is to assist and divide the many responsibilities that go into a sizable event, so if your event isn’t sizable, don’t worry about it.

Unless you want to, of course. In which case, read on.

Responsibilities For Everyone

Even though members of your wedding party will have responsibilities unique to their roles, there are some things that multiple individuals should chip in and help with.

These responsibilities often begin well before the big day and continue throughout the shindig until it’s time to take off those shoes that are killing you and go home.

Planning and Hosting

Members of the wedding party usually host pre-wedding parties like the engagement dinner, showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, etc. But they should also be ready to help you find vendors, taste cake, handle invitations and RSVPs, pick out wedding décor, and much more.

It takes a village, people.

Attire Shopping

Traditionally, everyone in a wedding party wears coordinating stuff or special occasion attire that requires some shopping. Your wedding party should be prepared to get their own threads, either as a group (bridesmaids and groomsman, for instance) or solo.

Rehearsal

There may be some people in the wedding party who won’t need to come to the rehearsal, but if your ceremony is a planned presentation, most wedding party members need to practice their part for the ceremony.

Besides, there will likely be a rehearsal dinner afterward with beverages and dessert. Everyone loves beverages and dessert.

Pre-Ceremony Prep

No bride is an island. She’ll need her squad to help her get into the dress, do hair and makeup, bring her champagne, etc., all before she even thinks about walking down the aisle.

The groom may need help in this department, too. But let’s face it, the bride probably needs it more.

Also, let’s not forget the moral support and damage control.

Words of encouragement can go a long way for a nerve-wracked bride and/or groom. Chances are, they’ll both need that.

Unfortunately, things can (and often do) go askew on the wedding day. There aren’t enough chairs, the flower girl threw up on her dress – the possibilities are endless. Your wedding party are the perfect folks to recruit for putting out any fires that may arise. (Hopefully, that doesn’t include a literal fire.)

Pictures

Everyone in your wedding party should be ready for pictures. Whether it’s convening after the ceremony for official pics, or candid shots throughout the wedding prep, you’ll treasure those pictures forever. They’re an essential part of the experience.

Common Wedding Roles in Traditional Ceremonies

Let’s get to the question on everyone’s mind first, shall we?

Who Pays For The Wedding?

You’ll notice we haven’t assigned this very, very important responsibility to any one person/group here. That’s because times are a-changin’ and the bride’s parents don’t have to be held solely responsible for paying for the wedding anymore.

Now, if the bride’s parents want to stay traditional about it, fantastic. Problem solved.

Otherwise, it’s a good idea for the bride and groom to communicate with the appropriate persons (usually the parents) about the very *minor* detail of divvying up the bill. That includes any portion the bride and groom will pay, if applicable.

Bride and Groom Responsibilities

Some things aren’t suitable for anyone but the bride and groom to take care of. These shared responsibilities include:

  • Budget planning
  • Choosing a date and location
  • Meeting with and paying the officiant
  • Acquiring and paying for each other’s wedding bands
  • Writing vows
  • Choosing maid of honor/bridesmaids and best man/groomsmen
  • Choosing wedding party attire
  • Compiling a guest list
  • Sending thank-you notes after the wedding’s over (although you may be able to recruit help from friends and family for that one)

Traditionally, the groom is expected to make a speech right after the bride’s father at the reception, but it isn’t required.

Parent(s) of the Bride

Traditionally speaking, the bride’s parents are expected to send out engagement announcements and host the engagement party.

The bride’s parents host the wedding and wedding weekend activities such as brunches and gatherings for the guests.

They usually stay until the reception is over to say goodbye to guests and handle payments for any applicable extras like parking attendants, coat-check, entertainment, the bar, etc.

The bride’s mother is a great secondary contact for vendors, planners, and anyone else involved in the wedding operations. She also should play a key role in helping with any issues around gift and registry details. She’s a great point person for handling the floral decorations/arrangements, too.

She’s also involved in bridal gown shopping, arranging and attending dress fittings, and arranging the hair and makeup appointments for the bridal party.

At the wedding, she assists in preparing the bride for the ceremony. Sometimes the mother-of-the-bride will deliver a speech at the reception, but not always.

The bride’s father is expected to escort her to the ceremony and down the aisle. He’ll deliver a speech accompanied by a toast at the reception, too.

Both the bride and groom’s parents should help with the guest list, offer moral support, and pick up planning slack as needed. They’re are also responsible for choosing (and getting fitted for) the formalwear they’ll don for the wedding.

Parent(s) of the Groom

In addition to the responsibilities shared with the bride’s parents we listed above, the groom’s parents are traditionally expected to foot the bill for the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding.

If the families aren’t well acquainted yet, the groom’s parents are usually the first to reach out and organize a gathering for them to get to know each other.

If applicable, they coordinate with the bride’s parents about wedding expenses and travel arrangements and greet the guests upon their arrival at the ceremony.

Maid/Matron of Honor

Now here’s where wedding roles and their responsibilities can help you decide who to appoint if you’re having a hard time.

The maid of honor has lots of responsibilities and she can expect to be quite busy throughout the wedding planning and execution. If you’re on the fence about who your maid of honor should be, keep that in mind.

She must coordinate the activities involving the bridesmaids, including but not limited to organizing the bachelorette party, bridal shower, and dress shopping and fittings/fitting luncheon.

Good to know: The cost of bridal party activities is usually covered by the maid of honor and the bride’s mother. The bachelorette party is divided between the maid of honor and the bridesmaids.

She’s the ambassador assigned to communicate details with the groomsmen and best man about attire, scheduling, and anything else they’re involved in.

maid of honor

She’ll likely help choose wedding décor and decorate the venue. She’ll help pick the bridal party dresses and bridal accessories like a veil, hair accessories, jewelry, etc.

On the big day, the maid of honor will help make sure the bride has everything she needs to get ready. If the bride is dressing for the wedding at the venue, her maid of honor will accompany her there.

She’ll help the bride get into her dress, put on jewelry, organize the bridal party’s hair and makeup if a professional has been hired to help, and more.

During the ceremony, she arranges the bride’s veil and train, holds the bride’s bouquet at the altar, and is documented as the bride’s witness on the marriage license.

She’ll usually give a speech and organize the wedding party for pictures at the reception.

After the reception, she’s responsible for keeping any keepsakes safe, too. Examples include the guest book, bridal bouquet, and the dress if the bride changes after the reception.

After all of that, she breathes a heavy sigh of relief, then goes home and soaks in a hot bath with a bottle of champagne.

Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids help the maid of honor with planning duties for things like the bridal shower and bachelorette party (and help with the costs for those, too).

If possible, they go to the dress fittings and have a hand in helping the bride choose her dress.

A bridesmaid may also help with tasks like addressing and sending out invitations decorating the venue, and assisting guests at the event as needed.

Junior Bridesmaids

Junior bridesmaids usually fall between eight and sixteen years old. They can help with age-appropriate tasks if they’d like to, but it’s not expected. (No bachelorette party planning, but the bridal shower is a go.) They also get to wear super cute dresses. Bonus.

Flower Girl

The flower girl is usually under seven or eight years old and is tasked with walking ahead of the bride to scatter flower petals down the aisle. She should be included in the rehearsal to make sure she’s comfortable and up for the task. She should also be invited to the rehearsal dinner. (As we’re assuming her parents are bringing her, they should be invited too!)

Best Man

The best man’s roles are similar to the maid of honor’s, only he doesn’t have as many.

Of course, it’s his job to organize the bachelor party, but he’s also responsible for the other events associated with the groomsmen. He’ll help coordinate the groomsmen and the fathers of the bride/groom for the formalwear fitting. He’s also responsible for preparing the groom’s attire before the wedding.

Many best men take responsibility for confirming the honeymoon travel details before the wedding and making sure the toasts are arranged before the reception.

best man giving speech

He orchestrates the groom’s travel to the wedding venue on the big day and ensures he has everything he needs to prepare. He’s documented as the groom’s witness on the marriage license, and he makes sure the bride’s ring gets there safe and sound.

At the reception, he’s responsible for making a speech and raising a toast to the happy couple.

If the bride and groom are exiting the wedding via a “getaway car,” the groom makes sure it’s decorated and the couple’s luggage is ready to go.

Finally, after the wedding, he makes sure any rented formalwear is returned.

Groomsmen (Ushers)

Before the wedding, groomsmen mainly help with the bachelor party and formalwear fitting, and that’s about it. Unless they want to do more, in which case the groom probably won’t say no.

The groomsmen should get to the wedding early to greet and seat guests. They should also stay throughout the reception to help guests find their way to the bathroom, coat-check, the open bar, etc.

Junior Groomsmen

Junior groomsmen are usually around eight to sixteen years old and help with ushering duties on the wedding day as needed.

Ring Bearer (Page Boy)

The ring bearer is usually seven years of age or younger and follows the couple down the aisle carrying the rings, traditionally on a pillow. He presents the rings to the maid of honor and the best man to give to the bride and groom when they exchange vows.

The ring bearer should come to the rehearsal, as he plays a part in the procession. He’s also included in the rehearsal dinner along with his ride. (Usually his parents.)

Reader

The reader stands before the wedding congregation and reads any meaningful passages, poems, or religious texts selected for the ceremony. Usually, the couple chooses the material, but sometimes the reader selects what to read.

Guest Book and Wedding Program Attendants

Guest book and wedding program attendants greet the guests as they get to the ceremony and ensure everyone receives a program. They’re in charge of the guest book, the wedding favors table, and managing the gifts table as well.

They also assist with any guests’ questions and point the way to the restrooms, coat-check, smoking areas, etc., throughout the ceremony and reception.

The attendants should be among the first to get to the venue to ensure everything is set up and ready to go when the guests arrive.

Officiant

The wedding officiant works with the couple before the wedding to prepare any vows and other materials needed for the ceremony. They’re responsible for leading the ceremony, including leading prayers if it’s a religious ceremony.

Most importantly, the officiant is charged with making the wedding legally official according to the state’s marriage laws. You know, so you’re legally married and stuff.

What Are The Roles In A Religious Wedding Party?

So many religions have rich traditions regarding wedding roles and what they symbolize. Here are a few roles you may already know and some you may not.

Shushavim

While some modern Jewish weddings feature a bride and groom’s party, traditional Jewish weddings usually don’t. Instead, a close friend and/or family member act as shushavim to assist and support the couple on their wedding day.

(C)Huppah Carriers

A chuppah (also known as a huppah) is a canopy sheltering the couple as they exchange their marriage vows. It can be made with a simple silk cloth, a prayer shawl, a tapestry, or any other material the couple wishes. As long as it’s supported by four poles carried by four male friends or relatives (the chuppah carriers) to represent the community’s support.

Marriage under the chuppah (translated from Hebrew as “canopy”) serves more than a ceremonial purpose – it also confirms the legality of the union.

Hattabin

In traditional Muslim unions, a groom selects a Hattabin to act as a best man of sorts. He helps the groom prepare for the wedding and assists with any planning needs.

Koumbaro/Koumbara

Eastern Orthodox wedding roles include a Koumbaro (male) or Koumbara (female) to help out with the wedding ceremony and reception. They are usually a close friend/family member of the groom.

Candle Lighter

In some Christian weddings, the marriage altar is lined with taper candles used to symbolize the union during the ceremony. Candle lighters are friends or family members chosen to light the candles prior to the beginning of the ceremony. Candle lighters are children usually between nine and 12 years old.

FAQ About Wedding Party Roles

How far in advance should I ask someone to be in my wedding?

It’s recommended to ask eight months to a year in advance. That will give your wedding party plenty of time to prepare.

What are wedding attendants?

A wedding attendant is a blanket term for members of the wedding party charged with assisting the couple. The maid of honor and best man are referred to as “attendants of honor.”

Who are the hosts at a wedding?

The bride’s parents usually act as the official hosts of the wedding. They’re responsible for greeting the guests, taking care of any vendor needs, providing assistance to the guests as needed, and staying until the last guests have left.

How many people are normally in a wedding party?

That depends upon the size of the wedding, but it’s important to consider just how long a ceremony can drag on when a ton of people have to walk down the aisle before the bride.

It’s also harder to wrangle a large wedding party together when it’s time to take pictures, assemble for the rehearsal, coordinate responsibilities for pre-wedding events, etc.

All that’s to say, in addition to the parents, flower girl, ring bearer, and other roles, five or so in the groom’s party and the same in the bridal party is a healthy number.

Can I have two maids/matrons of honor?

Sure! If you have a sister and a bestie you just can’t choose between, there’s no reason you should have to. Also, the more hands to help out, the merrier.

Big Roles for the Big Day

You may only have a few roles to fill for your wedding, or you may go all out and fill every position there is. No matter what you decide, we hope we’ve shed some light on what’s traditionally expected from each wedding party member.

The members of your wedding party will contribute to your big day in more ways than just providing logistical help. They’ll save your sanity, make you laugh when you feel like crying, and shed tears of joy with you when it’s time to say “I do.”

That role is well worth all the responsibility that comes with it.

Fit

Nothing beats a well-fitted shirt, but often, your average guy doesn’t quite know how that’s supposed to work. At least not until they’ve been around the proverbial block or two.

The best place to start is with a tailor. If a tailor isn’t in the cards, recruit an associate at the retail store where you shop. If that doesn’t work either, consult this sizing guide to learn how to measure yourself and your shirts accordingly.

How Do Dress Shirt Sizes Work?

When you see the two numbers listed on packaged dress shirts at the department store or your local TJ Maxx, you may be tempted to chuck the shirt in place of the S, M, L, XL variety. That’s not necessary.

The first number indicates the neck size, and the second is the sleeve length. Easy, right? (Only if you know your measurements, so get on that.)

If you’d like to translate those numerical measurements into letters, here’s a number-to-letter size translator from The Tie Bar. (Who happen to be on our list because they’re a brand that knows what’s up in the men’s dress shirt department.)

How A Dress Shirt Should Fit

Neck: If a shirt fits correctly, you should be able to fit two fingers under the collar after it’s buttoned.

Shoulders: The seam at the shoulders should hit as close to your shoulders as possible. The stitching will sag past the shoulders if the shirt is too large. If it’s too small, it’ll crunch up toward your neck and feel tight in the armpits.

Armhole: If the armholes of your shirt don’t fit correctly, chances are, the rest of the shirt won’t either. If they fit too loosely, the rest of your shirt will likely bag. Too tight, and you won’t be able to lift and rotate your arms without pulling the rest of the shirt. The armhole should provide you plenty of room to move without sagging too low under the armpit.

Sleeves: A well-fitted shirt will feature a sleeve that tapers to the cuff without ballooning. When buttoned, the cuff should hit the thumb’s base with your arms at your sides.

Chest: If a shirt fits correctly, you should be able to cross your arms in front of you without the shirt stretching across your upper back too tightly. Similarly, you should be able to extend your arms behind your back without pulling on the buttons across your chest so much that they gap. The Hulk is incredible and all, but you’ve seen what he does to his shirts – that can get expensive. Not to mention embarrassing.

Waist: A correctly fitted men’s dress shirt should stay trim all the way to the waistline. If the shirt is baggy when you tuck it in, it’s too large. If it pulls and gaps at the buttons, it’s too small.

Length: Ideally, a well-fitted shirt should be long enough to stay tucked when you lift your arms over your head but rest at the hip when untucked.

Types of Fit

Typically, dress shirts come in three fits:

Classic: Less tapered at the waist and sleeves, broader across the shoulders.

Slim: Tapered at the waist, trimmer across the chest, shoulders, and arms.

Regular: Still broad at the shoulders and less tapered in the waist, but trimmer than a classic fit.

Weave and Fabric

There are a few standard dress shirt fabrics, but cotton is the overwhelming choice for function and quality.

That said, what weave you choose is ultimately a matter of taste, but there are some guidelines about how to pick appropriately.

  • Poplin/Broadcloth Weave

Smooth, crisp, and lightweight, poplin (also known as broadcloth) is the fabric of choice for more formal shirts.

  • Oxford Weave

Oxford is rougher than other shirt fabrics. It stands up to frequent wear and tear and is an excellent choice for more casual shirts.

  • Pinpoint Weave

With a weave somewhere in between poplin and Oxford, a pinpoint shirt is made for flexibility. It’s at home both in the office and on casual occasions where a button-up collared shirt is the order of the day.

  • Twill Weave

Twill shirts are appropriate for both dress and casual occasions. While twill is soft, easy to iron, and relatively wrinkle-proof, it isn’t as crisp as poplin or pinpoint. Because of the weave pattern (such as houndstooth), it’s a bit harder to clean, too.

What Is Shirt Thread Count?

A shirt’s thread count is basically the number of woven threads in one square inch of fabric. Typically, men’s dress shirts feature a thread count between 50-200.

The higher the thread count, the better the quality. You’ll notice a correlating price difference, but it’s always worth it to pay a bit more for a shirt with a higher thread count.

What Does Ply Mean?

Most dress shirts come in one or two-ply fabrics. One-ply shirts are woven with one thread, while two-ply shirts are woven with two threads twisted around each other for more softness and durability.

Color

What go-to dress shirt colors should be in my closet?

This is a matter of taste as well, but unless you’re the most fashion-forward guy in the room and know how to rock a purple dress shirt, it’s better to keep it simple.

Most men’s fashion designers recommend keeping plenty of white and light blue shirts on hand because they look great with any suit color. If you’d like to branch out, very fine pinstripes or pale pink looks great, too.

For best results, the dress shirt should be a lighter color than your suit and provide plenty of contrast with the suit jacket and tie.

man in suit touching cuff

Where do the white collars and cuffs come from?

We’re glad you asked.

That, my friends, is called a Winchester shirt and was named for Oliver Winchester. While you may recognize the name more for guns than fine men’s dress shirts, he actually got his start as a clothing manufacturer.

By definition, a Winchester shirt is colored and/or patterned with cuffs and a collar in a contrasting color. (Usually white.)

The shirts were inspired by the detachable collars and cuffs of the Victorian era and are usually meant to be worn on formal occasions and as dressier office attire.

How To Recognize A Quality Men’s Dress Shirt

Collar Construction

A quality collar has a top layer, a middle layer that keeps the collar rigid (often called an interlining), and a bottom layer.

The layers are carefully stitched together and smooth flat when ironed in a quality shirt.

Cheaper shirts generally feature “fused” collars where all three layers are glued and pressed together (kind of like an iron-on patch) before a single pass with the sewing machine. Fused collars often bubble when ironed, and unsurprisingly, don’t hold up well with washing and wear.

Stitching

A well-made shirt will feature a high stitch per inch count and straight seams. To determine the quality of a shirt’s stitching, turn it inside out. The stitching on the inside should look as tight as it does outside.

The buttons and buttonholes should be firmly and cleanly stitched, as well.

Buttons

Plastic buttons are the most common type found on mass-produced shirts. If you can swing it, look for shirts with mother of pearl buttons. They hold up much longer and don’t melt under a hot iron like plastic buttons sometimes do.

Fabric

Many shirts are made from a poly/cotton blend, but 100% premium cotton is always best.

Button Holes

Buttonholes should be cleanly and firmly stitched, and perfectly fitted to the size of the buttons.

Fit

If a tailor-made shirt isn’t in the cards for you, find a dress shirt that fits as closely as possible to the guide we outlined above. A quality shirt should fit consistently and proportionately.

Flat Felled Seams

Turn the shirt inside out and look at how the seams are secured. If they aren’t stitched with the edge secured between a folded piece of fabric then stitched down together, you’re looking at a lower quality shirt. (A flat felled seam is the seam used to make denim jeans.)

Hand Sewn Cuffs

Just as with the collar, the cuffs of a well-made shirt feature three layers. Some shirts fuse those layers together and sew them all in one pass. In better-quality shirts, they’re hand sewn.

How To Properly Care For A Dress Shirt

How do I wash a dress shirt?

Dry cleaning is nice, but it can actually be a pretty rough process on your shirts. If you’d like someone else to handle your shirts, ask them to wash and press them instead.

If you don’t have the disposable income to pay for someone else to wash and iron your shirts, you can do it yourself at home with a few guidelines.

First, pre-treat any stains with a mild detergent. Unbutton all the buttons (cuffs too), remove the collar stays, and wash warm on the delicate cycle for white and light colors and delicate cold for darker colors.

It’s best to hang your shirts or dry them flat, but most dryers these days have a low setting gentle enough to dry a dress shirt. Iron with a warm iron.

Wrinkle-free shirts are a little lower maintenance when it comes to washing, and of course, don’t usually need a pass-through with the iron.

Hang your shirts with a padded or wooden hanger for best results between washes.

Men’s Dress Shirts Brands to Look For

For good quality and a great fit at an affordable price, look to our favorite men’s dress shirt brands.

1. Bonobos

bonobos jetsetter stretch light blue dress shirt
Jetsetter Stretch Dress Shirt

Bonobos began its clothing journey by perfecting the ubiquitous khaki pant and have branched out into all kinds of fine menswear since.

Their men’s dress shirt line has a great variety of style options, from crisp classic white to bold patterns. They’re also known to carry a broad range of sizes for every shape and stature.

If you like your shirts fitted with a bit of give for movement, this shirt manages to mix quality and comfort effortlessly. It’s made with a poly/cotton/lycra blend and comes in tailored and slim fits.

2. The Tie Bar

Polished Chambray Blue Dress Shirt
Polished Chambray Blue Dress Shirt

Unlike some of its competitors, The Tie Bar sticks to the basics regarding the dress shirts they offer. They also keep their prices low considering the quality of their shirts.

You won’t find a ton of variety of fabrics, but you will find three kinds of cuff and collar options to choose from, which is plenty for the average guy looking for work shirts. Also, their shirts are suuuper soft.

We really like this smart blue chambray shirt, and the semi-spread collar is versatile enough to fit whatever knot your tie can throw at it. It’s made from 100% cotton and comes in trim fit.

3. Nordstrom

blue nordstrom wrinkle free dress shirt
Wrinkle-Free Solid Dress Shirt

Of course Nordstrom offers a signature men’s dress shirt that makes anyone who wears it look like a million bucks. We probably don’t need to get into the intricacies of why their dress shirts are great – they’ve been around carrying luxury clothes forever. Just stroll into your nearest location and ask for directions to the men’s shop: you’ll see.

Not all wrinkle-free shirts are created equal, but this one ticks all the boxes. It features a curved hem, a pointed collar with removable stays, and 100% midweight cotton construction. Comes in classic fit with plenty of room through the chest, waist, and armholes.

4. J. Crew

Slim Bowery wrinkle-free stretch cotton shirt
Bowery Wrinkle-Free Stretch Cotton

Another well-known brand that’s been around forever, J. Crew can turn out a quality dress shirt as effortlessly as a knit sweater or Nordic hiking boots. Although we do have to say, we’re partial to their more casual dress shirts like the one we featured here.

Every guy should have a more relaxed, casual button-down shirt in their closet for less dressy occasions where you still have to look sharp. We think this one’s an excellent option with its buttoned collar and simple one-button cut cuff. It’s made from a cotton/elastane blend for a bit of stretch, too.

5. Luxury Brand: Turnbull & Asser

CLOUDY BLUE STRIPE COTTON REGULAR FIT MAYFAIR SHIRT
Cloudy Blue Stripe Cotton Mayfair Shirt

What can we say about Turnbull & Asser, except they make the sexiest, most masculine shirts ever? I guess we could mention that they carry a James Bond collection that will make you look like Sean Connery in his heyday. Oh, and they’re endorsed by British royalty.

If you happen to be in London, stop by their Bury street location and get fitted – they’ll create a custom shirt precisely for you.

It was hard to choose an example to show you from Turnbull & Asser because you’ll want every single shirt they make, so we decided to go with the classic of classics. This regular-fit shirt features the classic Turnbull & Asser style collar and three-button cuffs. It’s made from the most luxurious 100% cotton fabric, and the buttons are mother-of-pearl.

6. Brooks Brothers

Regent Regular-Fit Dress Shirt
Regent Pinpoint English Collar

Across the pond (with a more *ahem* reasonable price point), we have the iconic Brooks Brothers, creating luxury dress shirts for guys since 1818 from their flagship store in good old NY, NY. If you like your shirts crisp, smart, and with a side of heritage, Brooks Brothers has it.

This shirt has everything you need to take on the boardroom with moxie. It’s made from luxe cotton woven in Italy and features mother of pearl buttons, double-barrel two-button cuffs, and a sharp English spread collar. The shirt shown here is standard, but it’s available in regular and slim fits as well.

7. Land’s End

Supima Pinpoint Button Down Collar Dress Shirt
Men’s Pattern No Iron Supima Button Down Collar

Land’s End prides itself in creating comfortable, laid-back clothing with preppy flair – so it isn’t surprising that they make a dress shirt that fits that criteria. In addition, their dress shirts are made with 100% Supima cotton, making them stronger and softer while staying blissfully wrinkle-free.

We think the patterns available for this shirt look effortlessly classy. If you want a dressy yet semi-casual shirt with more personality than blue and white, this is it. It features a button-down collar and two-button cuffs in traditional, tailored, and slim fits.

8. Banana Republic

Slim Premium Poplin Dress Shirt
Slim Fit Premium Poplin

For many guys just starting out in the workplace, Banana Republic was where they went to find their first real dress shirts for work. Without mom’s help. It’s definitely a go-to place for quality, fashionable dress shirts that stand up to wear and tear like a pro. Their shirts may be a bit pricey compared to some, but they’re definitely worth it.

This slim-fit poplin shirt fits the bill for any work occasion in typical Banana Republic style. It’s made from 2-ply 100% cotton and sports a sharp spread collar.

9. Charles Tyrwhitt

Non-Iron Twill Shirt - White
Non-Iron Twill French Cuff Shirt

Another English clothier from Jerwyn Street (the mecca of fine menswear in London), Charles Tyrwhitt has the reputation to match their real estate. Some may not realize the tremendous value they’re getting when they order a Charles Tyrwhitt shirt, too. Look for their online sales, and you’ll see what we mean.

We did a serious whiplash-inducing double take when we saw the price of this luxe shirt. It’s made from 100% cotton twill and has a classic collar and square French cuffs. It even features brass collar stays. Honestly, you can’t get a better shirt with all the expensive bells and whistles for a price like that.

10. Everlane

Slim Fit Japanese Oxford Uniform Shirt
Slim Fit Japanese Oxford Uniform Shirt

Everlane designs clothes with maximum style while staying classic. Their dress shirt collection is no different. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention their 365-day satisfaction guarantee as well. If your shirt springs a leak (or pops a button, frays some edges, etc.), they’ll replace it.

We love this tailored shirt with a casual(ish) preppy twist! (In case you’re wondering, by the way, the “Japanese” moniker comes from the fabric made in Japan with 100% cotton yarn.) It has a button-down collar, back pleat with a hanging loop, and if you don’t love the blue and white pattern we picked, it comes in a few basic colors you’ll love.

11. Calvin Klein

Performance Herringbone French Cuff Dress Shirt
Slim-Fit Non-Iron Herringbone French Cuffs

Calvin Klein is a brand that consistently conjures visions of sophistication and style whenever you hear the name. Their men’s dress shirts are an excellent example of how they’ve managed to hang on to that reputation for so many years. Hip, stylish, and quality-made: all benchmarks for a great dress shirt.

Herringbone (or twill) is a beautiful fabric for dress shirts, and this one has the added bonus of low-maintenance laundering. It’s slim cut throughout for a sleek, modern silhouette and features French cuffs and spread collar.

12. Ralph Lauren

Slim Fit Poplin Shirt
Slim-Fit Poplin Shirt

You can find Ralph Lauren ready-to-wear clothing at department stores worldwide, and there’s a reason why they’re so universally popular. Their dress shirts are among the staple pieces celebrated for years. Besides, if it’s good enough for the US Olympic team, it’s good enough for us.

The ultimate in collegiate style, the trademark polo pony is ubiquitous among the young and upwardly mobile set. This slim-fit shirt features buttoned barrel cuffs, a button-down point collar, and box pleat for a perfect fit across the back and shoulders. Made from 100% cotton.

13. Eton

White Signature Twill Shirt
White Signature Twill Shirt

Continually pushing to make fantastic shirts even better, Eton has worked hard to make a dress shirt that’ll turn heads at the office. Eton has developed a process that organically treats its yarn to make it naturally wrinkle-free, unlike some other companies that treat the whole shirt with chemicals to achieve the same results.

This handsome shirt stands out from some of the others we’ve shared because of (among other things) the extreme cut-away collar perfectly designed for wider-knotted ties. We love the effortless cut of the cuffs, too. Made from low-maintenance wrinkle-free 100% cotton.

14. Todd Snyder

Made in the USA Hamilton + Todd Snyder Dress Shirt
Made in the USA Hamilton + Todd Snyder Dress Shirt

A renowned designer of menswear, GQ called Todd Snyder “the man who taught men to love clothes.” One look at his clothing line, and more specifically, his line of dress shirts, and that accolade makes total sense. More affordable than some brands, a little less than others – they’re like the Goldilocks of dress shirts.

This shirt has it all: mother of pearl buttons, a hand-sewn moderate spread collar, and hand-sewn single-button cuffs. It’s also made from Egyptian cotton woven in Italy, then hand cut and sewn in the US. Not too shabby.

Look Out World

We hope we’ve helped you find the perfect shirt to make you feel good about emerging from the Covid cave of working from home. After all, a crisp dress shirt seems to make a man stand up straighter and stride through the day with confidence.

Look out, world – you’re bringin’ sexy back.

32 Elopement Dresses: Escape to Wedded Bliss in Style!

Finding just the perfect dress for your elopement can be just as difficult as finding one for a big wedding. Even though you won’t have a bunch of guests to admire you, you still want to feel beautiful and confident. And you should!

Some brides dream of going out and trying on a million dresses to find the right one. But if you’re eloping, we’re guessing that isn’t quite your style. With an intimate wedding and a (usually) shorter timeline, you’ll want to be flexible in finding the best elopement wedding dress in time for your romantic escape.

Let this be your validation: you can totally shop for and buy an elopement dress online, and it can be amazing. There are so many high-quality options that can hit on the style that you’re looking for – and often at very reasonable prices.

From casual and flirty to elegant and memorable, check out our favorite elopement dresses. There’s something on this list for every bride!

What Type of Dress is Best for an Elopement?

There are a few things that you should consider when it comes to picking an elopement dress. Depending on location, venue, weather, if you want a traditional designer, and what your favorite style is, there is a huge variety of dresses from which you can choose.

If you are getting married in a warm or tropical situation, you may not want a full traditional dress. You could easily get overheated and sweaty, which is not what you want for your special day. The other problem you may have with a traditional dress is the timing. If you are planning on eloping quickly, you may not have time to order, receive and alter a designer wedding dress, or any gown that may need adjustments.

On the other hand, if your elopement ceremony will take place in a more temperate climate or if you have some more time, you could invest in a more traditional dress if that’s what you’ve always dreamed of. You could go with a classic look, lacy, modern style, jumpsuit, formal, mini dress, full skirt, separates, or something unconventional.

elopement dresses

One of the best parts about an elopement is the freedom to plan every detail of your day, without having to consider the opinions of guests and extended family. This means that the wedding dress world is your oyster! You can choose from practically any dress cut out there, like a daring mermaid, a classic A-line, or even a modern two-piece. With elopement dresses, it is also helpful to be able to move easily, so consider lightweight fabrics and lace to move around better and stay cooler.

If you are planning on having a formal wedding or reception later, you may want to use the same dress or find a different one that’s more dance-floor-friendly. If taking pictures in your dress is important to you, you can do it the same day or later on at your large reception.

When it comes down to it, the final dress is your choice. You can pick whatever you want. An elopement is still a wedding, and you deserve to wear whatever you like. Fortunately, there are many, many options to choose from.

Elopement Dress FAQ

What is elopement?

Even though the traditional concept of elopement is pretty secretive in that couples get married without their friends and family knowing, it has changed over time.

Now, it doesn’t always have to be a secret. Instead, the couple might choose to tell friends and family ahead of time. It could also be an intimate ceremony with just a few guests in place of a large ceremony. Elopement is what you make it!

What is an elopement dress?

Elopement dresses can really be whatever you want them to be. There are so many options out there that you can truly tailor your dress to whatever you want. This flexibility includes style. Everything goes, from ballgowns to mini dresses. If there is a difference between traditional wedding dresses and elopement dresses, it’s that you have many more choices.

How much should I spend on an elopement dress?

You can choose a simple dress, or something as extravagant as you like, so the price can really vary. This answer all depends on what you want. If you want something with a ton of beading and details, it will usually cost more. But in the end, you should get something that makes you happy. It is still your wedding, after all!

Does an elopement dress have to be white?

Nope! You can wear whatever color you want. You’re having a nontraditional wedding, so feel free to have a nontraditional dress. Even if you were having a large wedding, many brides still choose to change their dress or add in colors. I had a white dress for mine, but added dark blue accents to it to make it unique.

Wear What You Love

Even though you’re eloping or having a small wedding, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get the dress of your dreams. The choices above really run the whole gambit of gown choices from simple to extravagant. You can add floral patterns or colors, or you can go with a traditional white.

Get the dress you want and build some beautiful memories of your elopement with your sweetheart!

25. Monique Lhuillier

BRIDALFall 2022 Emma

Designer Monique Lhuillier is known for her celebrity gowns, designing wedding dresses for the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Britney Spears. Her star-worthy wedding creations are luxurious, feminine, and different than your run-of-the-mill dresses. Understated elements such as monochromatic floral patterns, flowy sleeves, and billow skirts that float down the aisle put a fun spin on traditional silhouettes. Many of Monique’s wedding dresses have a royal or regal feel.

Prices typically start around $3,000 but can exceed $55,000 for a completely custom creation.

Choose Monique Lhuillier if you’re dreamy of a flowing, feminine dress with fashion-forward touches.

26. Markarian

Roxie White Lace Gown

Markarian (Alexandra O’Neill’s luxury label) takes its name from an exceptionally bright grouping of galaxies, so it is no surprise that their ethereal wedding dress designs are just as radiant. These dresses truly seem to focus on the architectural look of the gown, playing with crisp lines, fitted bodice’s, and towers of ruffled organza. Brides can find everything from modern mini suits to more traditional A-line gowns, each with its own special touch of embellishment.

Markarian gowns cost between $2,000 and $6,000.

Markarian is perfect for brides who want an eye-catching gown that makes great use of form and fun embellishments.

27. Odylyne The Ceremony

Caspian gown

Indie brides will rejoice when they stumble upon Odylyne The Ceremony. These breathtaking gowns are utterly romantic and indisputably Bohemian. They have a laidback feel but are far from looking understated with their large bell sleeves, fun patterns, and lush ruffles. Their mission is to leave ordinary behind when it comes to bridal, and their dreamy gowns do just that.

Odylyne The Ceremony dresses range between $3,500 and $6,000.

Shop Odylyne The Ceremony if you want a stand-out Bohemian dress that evokes feelings of romance and soft feminine elegance.

28. Sophie et Voilà

Finta Wedding Dress

In 2016, Sofía Arribas and Saioa Goitia founded their Spanish bridal label, Sophie et Voilà. Their architectural background really comes through in their bold geometric gowns that perfectly blend strong forms and soft lines.

However, these statement-making gowns are minimalist instead of over the top. Think crisp lines and stiff pleats accented by ethereal ruffles. Sophie et Voilà gowns also incorporate recycled materials into their gowns as part of their sustainability promise. These wedding dresses range from $1,400 to $4,000.

Brides who want a minimalist, contemporary, and chic gown with an eco-friendly construction will adore Sophie et Voilà.

Wedding Gown Designer FAQ

When should I start wedding dress shopping?

It doesn’t hurt to start doing your research early, that way you’ll have a sense of your wedding style and what type of gown you’re looking for. Then, when you know your budget and have your shopping party, you can start browsing! Because wedding dresses can take months to make, ship, and alter, it’s a good idea to start looking 8 to 9 months before the date of your nuptials.

Who is the most popular wedding dress designer?

There is no easy answer to this question! Each designer is popular and renowned in their own right. Some, like Pnina Tornai, have become household names due to their appearance on television shows. Others, such as Reem Acra, are famous for being celebrity designers. There isn’t really one designer that holds the title of most popular.

How much does it cost to go through a wedding gown designer for my dress?

Prices can vary, but you usually will be looking at spending at least $2,000. Some designers, such as Atelier Emelia, offer small customizations instead of a complete “from scratch” design, which will likely cost you less.

Dazzling Designers for Every Type of Bride

Each wedding gown designer has something special to bring to your wedding gown. We love how many of them rely on classic silhouettes that brides love, but add their own unique twist when it comes to fabrics, embellishments, and fun characteristics.

Knowing your favorite designers will help you and your wedding dress shopping party narrow down which gown will be “the one” for you!

34 Comfortable Wedding Shoes That Won’t Hurt Your Feet, Style, or Budget!

On your wedding day, there will likely be lots of love, laughter, dancing…and standing on your feet! The big day calls for a pair of shoes that are big on comfort and style – without blowing your budget.

Whether you’re looking for flats, sandals, heels, or something a little unorthodox, we’ve found the best comfortable wedding shoes that will help you look and feel fabulous.

After all, there’s probably a lot you want to do and see on your honeymoon, and sore feet from uncomfortable wedding shoes can really put a damper on things.

In this article, you will find 34 examples of comfortable wedding shoes – high and low heels, sandals and flats, wedges and boots…

At the bottom of this article, you can find all the online shops where we found these comfortable shoes, as well as some shops that are known to specialize in high quality bridal footwear.

So, without further ado…let’s go shopping!

Buying Considerations

Obviously, comfort is a top priority when considering what to look for in comfortable wedding shoes. However, just because you’re wearing kicks that feel as supportive and lovely as your grandma’s orthotics doesn’t mean they have to look like them! Pay attention to these details when browsing for wedding day footwear.

  • Match the setting to the shoe. If you’re going to be outdoors, check that your footwear can withstand the elements. Sand, soggy grass, and more can spell trouble for some shoe types.
  • Vibe check. If you have a high hemline that allows your footwear to be seen, make sure your shoes match your aesthetic and theme.
  • See that your heights coordinate. While a few brides can pull off any shoe with any dress length, we can’t all be that lucky. Some heel heights just work better with certain dress lengths, like kitten heels or wedges with a tea-length gown.
  • Protection is important. Even though your shoes are comfy, make sure they offer protection too. This is especially true of flat sandals that could allow your feet to come into contact with hot sand, mud, or painful pebbles.
  • Now, down to the dancing. If you want to get your boogie on, check that your shoes can do more than just get you down the aisle. If they can’t, consider buying a different pair for the ceremony.
  • Break those babies in! Break-in your shoes before attempting to wear them on your wedding day, even if they are the comfiest pair on the planet. Practice makes perfect.

Comfortable Wedding Shoes FAQ

Should I choose my wedding shoes before or after my dress?

It’s usually a good idea to choose your shoes after your dress, that way you can make sure things like the aesthetic and height match. But sometimes you can’t pass up a phenomenal pair of shoes! If you do pick your shoes first, just know that it might slightly limit your dress options.

Can I wear sneakers under my wedding dress?

Yes, and some of us gals here have actually done it! It was blessedly comfortable and insanely cute, if we do say so ourselves.

Can I wear sandals as a bride?

While we wouldn’t go with your trusty pair of old flip flops, you can certainly wear sandals as a bride. There are a few exceptions here – for example, they may not go over so well at a traditional Catholic ceremony in the middle of winter. Thankfully, the wide variety of available styles means there is a sandal for almost every wedding venue.

Do my wedding shoes have to be white?

Nope! We are particularly fond of the navy, baby blue, or cerulean options that both add interest to your wedding ensemble and check off the traditional “something blue” requirement.

Can I be barefoot at my wedding?

As long as you’re comfortable and confident, barefoot is an acceptable wedding footwear choice! If you don’t want to go entirely bare, you can opt for barefoot sandals that give the illusion of footwear with their elegant crystals and chains.

Comfy – But Make It Chic

“What a girl wants, what a girl needs…is to feel commmffyyy!”

Excuse us while we take a few liberties with a classic Christina Aguilera ballad. But it’s true! You don’t want to be miserable on your wedding day due to painful feet, nor do you want to risk tripping down the aisle in the name of fashion.

We’re confident that the shoes on this list are both comfortable and chic, giving you the confidence to waltz, run, skip, or do whatever you please down the aisle.

What Are the Traditional & Modern Gifts For A 19th Anniversary?

Why are Traditional & Modern Gifts a Thing in the First Place?

While the verdict is still kind of out on how the whole “specific-gifts-for-specific-anniversaries” thing came to be, we know for sure the custom became popular in Victorian times.

Why? Probably for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which being that many Victorians were pretty pessimistic when it came to issues of love, marriage, and all the fun stuff that comes with it.

When marriage for love gradually became more common than marriages of convenience, anniversary gifts commemorating each year a couple had been together grew in popularity as important symbols of long-term commitment.

Because a marriage for love wouldn’t have as much sticking power as marriage for, let’s say, money or status, they needed to prove to the world that a couple was legit.

They may have been prudish, but those Victorians sure were romantic.

Modern and Traditional 19th Anniversary Gift: Bronze

Coming in at number one, it’s no stretch to see why bronze is both the traditional and modern gift of choice for a 19th wedding anniversary. Versatile and beautiful, this metal is an excellent medium for everything from art to jewelry to kitchen tools. Not to mention it’s a perfect option for both men and women.

19th Anniversary Flower: Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums are such a great flower to represent the 19th anniversary because of their resilience! Hardy mums do best in the chilly months of October and November and can gracefully withstand a light freeze to come back even prettier after. We’ll let you connect the symbolism for yourself.

19th Anniversary Gemstone: Aquamarine

Dreamy aquamarine is the official gemstone of 19 years! Its color represents calm and serenity for many of us: traits reminiscent of a long-lasting marriage. Maybe. Ok, calm and serenity is a tall order – no pressure.
