A New Cut for an Old Classic: Radiant Cut Diamonds

Whoever was in charge of marketing when they invented the term “radiant cut diamonds” should get a prize — what women doesn’t want to look radiant?

Radiant cut diamonds are a relatively new addition to the diamond cut family. They were created with the intent of combining the best attributes of existing popular diamond cuts: the elongated elegance of an emerald cut, the trim lines of a princess cut, the durability of a cushion cut, and the timeless sparkle of a round brilliant cut diamond. A pretty mammoth undertaking, all in all. Were they successful? Let’s find out together.

What Is a Radiant Cut Diamond?

The radiant cut was developed in 1977 by an ambitious diamond cutter named Henry Grossbard. He wanted to create a geometric diamond shape inspired by the emerald cut that rivaled the brilliance of round cut diamonds.

What he came up with was a seventy-facet elongated stone with beveled corners and an extraordinary display of sparkle. Face up, the radiant cut can look quite similar to the cushion cut, but it certainly has a more modern appeal. The corners are sharply cut, whereas the corners on a cushion cut diamond are gently rounded. The facets of a radiant cut diamond are thinner, longer, and sharper, resulting in a much more glittery gem.

You’ll also see them being compared to princess cuts. They were actually developed right around the same time — 1977 and 1980, respectively. While radiant cuts are traditionally rectangular and princess cuts are traditionally square, each can be found in both elongated and square cut shapes.

The biggest difference between the two is the corners: sharp points on princess cuts and blunted corners on the radiant. This makes the radiant cut a much more durable choice for everyday wear since you don’t need to worry about the corners chipping. Radiants also have more facets than princess cut diamonds, showing more cut glass brilliance than the tidy scintillation of a princess cut.

Which Setting Is Best for a Radiant Cut Diamond?

The great thing about radiant cuts is they shine in both modern and vintage style settings. They’re a fantastic choice for three-stone rings and rings with smaller accent diamonds on each side. Other elongated shapes, such as baguettes, bring the eye’s attention to the strong lines of the radiant cut diamond. Other accent shapes, such as round diamonds or pear cuts, can give the piece a softer look.

And, of course, a bold solitaire is always elegant — this diamond shape needs no entourage to support its… ahem…. radiance.

Shopping for Radiant Cut Diamonds

If you’ve decided to choose a radiant cut diamond for your engagement ring, you might find yourself going on a bit of a treasure hunt. Radiant cuts are specialized (what the GIA calls a “fancy shape”) and harder to find in jewelry boutiques than standard round brilliants. Your best bet is to search reputable online vendors with high-quality photos and accompanying diamond certificates, such as James Allen and Blue Nile.

When you first start looking for your new radiant cut diamond ring or pendant, it’s helpful to first narrow down the size ratio that you’re looking for. Square cut radiants are best in length to width ranges of 1:1 to 1.05:1. For an elongated radiant cut, 1.15 to 1.35 is the most popular. You’ll need to examine different diamonds with different length to width ratios to get a sense of what shape is right for you. Avoid the “grey area” between 1.05 and 1.15 – these not-quite-square diamonds tend to look a bit awkward and unbalanced.

Once you’ve narrowed down the diamond of your dreams, you can look at the four diamond quality factors: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

Cut

Like other fancy cut diamonds, radiant cuts don’t receive a formal cut grade on diamond grading certificates. That means it’s up to the buyer to compare diamonds and see what makes them glow.

In general, cut is the most important factor when it comes to determining a diamond’s beauty. It’s what takes the raw optical properties inherent in the rough stone and essentially splits them apart into a cascade of light and sparkle.

In a well cut diamond, light will enter the surface of the stone and ricochet off the diamond’s many facets. Some of the light will be sent back at the viewer (this is called “brilliance”) and some of it will break up into rainbow hues of spectral color (this is called “dispersion” or “fire). A poorly cut diamond won’t retain light very well, and the stone will look dull and empty.

When evaluating the cut of a radiant diamond, see if the retailer can tell you the table percentage and depth percentage. These are industry standard measurements that show us the percentage a given measurement (the size of the table, or the total height of the stone in this case) takes up out of the entire width of the stone. An ideal table measurement is 61-69% — therefore, about two thirds of the entire width. An ideal depth percentage is 61-67%, so about a third of the measurement of the stone’s total diameter. These proportions guarantee the best light return and the most sparkle.

Also check to see that the table is centered right in the middle of the stone, that the facets are symmetrical and well balanced, and that the corners are cut evenly so that each side is a mirror image of the other.

Color

All diamonds are graded based on the GIA’s D-Z color scale, with D being the most colorless and Z having strong tones of yellow, brown, or grey. Some stones show hints of color better than others — cushion cuts, for example, don’t hide color very well and so it’s recommended to invest in a slightly higher color grade.

Radiant cuts sparkle enough to hide most off colors, so in this case, investing in a D color would be an unnecessary expense (unless you want to consider reselling it later on). The best value for a radiant diamond is in the near colorless range, or G-I. A yellow gold setting will also help to dim undesirable color tones better than white gold or platinum, so if you’re purchasing a yellow gold jewelry piece you can go to a J or K color and still have a diamond that looks bright and colorless.

Clarity

Radiant cut diamonds have a large table facet, but they also have 69 other facets interlocked together that give the diamond an intense amount of sparkle. These flashes of light hide inclusions (internal flaws) very well, so even diamonds in a lower clarity grade can still look clean to the naked eye.

When shopping for a radiant cut diamond, the best value is between about a VS2 and an SI1. Be sure to choose one without any clarity characteristics (blemishes or inclusions) right under the table facet — that’s where they’ll be most obvious. If you’re considering a diamond in the lower end of this clarity range, try to see it for yourself in person if you can. Otherwise, make sure you get a chance to view it through highly detailed photos.

Carat Weight

Carat weight is a unit that represents 0.2 grams, or a fifth of a gram. Although all 1ct. diamonds will weigh exactly the same, they may look larger or smaller face up depending on the way they’re faceted and any optical tricks the diamond’s outline plays on the eye.

Radiants are a great choice for the budget-conscious because they tend to look larger for their carat weight than other diamond cuts. Grossbard designed this shape so that it would combine the brilliance of round cut diamonds with a more impressive face up appearance. Its shallow depth and generous table give the impression of being much bigger than it is.

This means you can go a little smaller and put the money saved towards getting the best possible cut and color grades.

Radiant Cut Diamond FAQ

What does a radiant cut say about you?

Radiant cut diamonds are especially popular with women who are confident, outgoing, and full of energy. The unique combination of strong lines and delicate sparkle shows a lot of inner strength on behalf of the wearer. Being such a groundbreaking addition to the world of diamond cuts, radiants are a great choice for creative, innovative women.

What’s the difference between radiant and emerald cuts?

These two diamond cuts can look quite similar, as they’re both rectangles with blunted corners. However, the faceting structure is quite different. Emerald cuts are faceted with what’s known as a “step cut”, which is a series of long, parallel lines (like a flight of steps). Emerald cut diamonds don’t sparkle in the way that traditionally cut diamonds do – instead, they display a “hall of mirrors” effect of light and shadow that is quite spectacular.

Radiant cuts, by contrast, are closer to the brilliant fire and scintillation of a traditional round brilliant. They exhibit a wonderful sparkle and flashes of colored light. Both radiants and emerald cuts are absolutely stunning but in very different ways. If possible, see if you can look at the two of them side by side to see which one is right for you.

How do I care for a radiant cut diamond?

Radiant cut diamonds are actually one of the most durable diamond shapes you can get. Their rectangular shape and blunted corners hold up very well to everyday wear. This makes them a great choice for very active women.

Like all diamonds, however, they can chip or fracture if heavily impacted. Make sure to choose a setting with prongs that protect the most vulnerable areas of the stone, and keep it clean with a soft, clean cloth or a baby toothbrush.

Is a Radiant Cut Diamond in Your Future?

All diamond cuts are an accomplishment – the result of human beings bringing out the best in a rough diamond. But radiant cuts are something truly special. They combine the geometric appeal of an emerald cut diamond with the romantic sparkle of a round brilliant, and hints of the soft femininity of a cushion cut. Their wider shape gives them an impressive face up appearance for their carat weight and their durability makes them a solid choice for any lifestyle.

Whether you’re looking for a proud solitaire, a trendy modern design, or a vintage throwback to a more romantic era, a radiant diamond will never let you down.

What to Look For in a Pearl Ring

When you first begin shopping for your new pearl ring, you might be amazed at the wide selection. Pearl jewelry has come a long way since Grace Kelly’s time and now there are pearl rings to suit all styles, seasons, and budgets.

While you’re looking through the range of pearl rings out there (we’ll show you some of our favorites down below), here are a few things to keep in mind.

What kind of pearl do you want?

A golden South Sea pearl resembling a drop of molten sunlight, or a classic Akoya with overtones reminiscent of a rosy sunrise? Or maybe a perfectly petite freshwater pearl is right for you since they hold up better to everyday wear.

There are also Tahitian pearl rings which bring a darker, more modern look to your jewelry wardrobe, and baroque pearl rings, which ensure that your jewelry item is utterly one of a kind.

You’ll also want to think about what size you want your pearl to be. Larger pearls will command more attention, but they’ll also be more susceptible to damage and wear-and-tear. Smaller pearls will make a subtler, more elegant statement and be a little less exposed to potential bumps and scratches.

What about the design?

Do you like yellow gold, white gold, silver, platinum? No matter what metal you prefer for your jewelry, there will be a pearl ring somewhere that’s just right for you.

Also consider the style — vintage? Modern? Ornate? Streamlined? Geometric? While pearls are often associated with vintage and vintage-inspired jewelry, you can also find pearls being used in all sorts of trim, rich, modernist styles.

What about accents?

Do you want your pearl ring to be a simple solitaire, or adorned with sparkling diamonds, colored gemstones, or — raises hand — more pearls? Once you look through our favourite pearl rings list below, you’ll realize that there is no limit to the inspiring combinations contemporary jewelers are able to offer.

Pearl Ring FAQ

How do you care for a pearl ring?

Pearls are among the more fragile gemstones, with a very soft surface — only a 2 on the Mohs Scale of hardness. Being an organic gemstone, their surfaces are hugely impacted by the chemicals found in your perfumes, body products, and cleaners.

When wearing pearls for a special night out, do your best to use any sort of chemical product earlier on in the evening while you’re getting ready, and then put your pearls on last before you head out the door. This gives the products a chance to dissipate without harming the pearl.

Then, once you’re finished with your pearls for the night, wipe them down with a soft cloth and store them safely away from other jewelry.

Can you wear a pearl ring every day?

When you ask this question, you’re likely to get one of two very different answers.

The first: “No, absolutely not, pearls are fragile and precious and must be protected at all costs. Don’t abuse them. Don’t sneeze near them. Really, don’t even look at them too hard.”

The second: “It’s your ring, do whatever you want. Who’s going to stop you?”

Both of these things are true. (Except the ‘don’t look at them’ part — we think you should look at your pearls all the time.)

Pearls are indisputably soft, easily bumped and scratched, and susceptible to the harsh chemicals found in things like perfumes and household cleaners. For this reason, it’s usually recommended that you keep your pearls for special occasions and wipe them down with a clean, soft cloth after wearing them.

With that being said, there’s no reason you can’t wear your pearl ring all the time if you know and accept that it will begin to show signs of wear rather quickly. Your pearl ring may begin to lose its shine from exposure to perfumes and body products, and you may start to see little nicks and scratches on the surface. If you think this is going to be a major problem, best put it away and keep it for special nights out.

If, however, you recognize that we all show signs of wear and tear over time and it’s simply part of the wonder that is being alive, then by all means enjoy wearing your pearl ring every single day.

Are pearl engagement rings a good idea?

I’m a little biased, but I think pearls are always a good idea. As we saw above, pearls aren’t the most durable of gems — actually, there are very few gems that are less durable — and when worn every day they can start to show their age pretty quickly. For this reason, you may want to choose a harder stone like diamond, ruby, or sapphire for your engagement ring.

However, if you absolutely love pearls, then the most important thing is to have an engagement ring that makes your heart sing to look at it. Wear a pearl ring if that’s the one you know you’ll love best! Just be mindful that it won’t always look perfectly shiny and new.

What stones best complement pearls on an engagement ring?

Pearls and diamonds are a timeless combination — the soft pearlescent luster is perfectly enhanced by the glitter and sparkle of diamond accents. However, you can also find pearl rings with complimentary sapphire and rubies, which are great for adding a little nudge of color without overwhelming the pearl.

What does a pearl engagement ring symbolize?

No matter the style or setting, pearls are an immortal symbol of beauty, femininity,  and elegance. Perhaps more so than any other stone, pearls symbolize a sense of beauty and refinement that transcends trends and generations. Women who choose pearl engagement rings are usually free-spirited, creative, and loyal to classic styles that work for them rather than chasing the latest fashions.

How can I tell if my pearls are real?

With so many gorgeous pearl rings on the market, it’s totally valid to wonder if there are some fakes out there too. If you can, try to get your pearl ring from a reputable jeweler like some of the ones we’ve shared here.

If you’re still not sure, there are some quick and easy tests you can do at home to test if your pearl is real.

The Right Ring for Everyone

We’ve shared stunning solitaire pearl rings, dainty boho-inspired pieces, and dazzling baroque pearl rings that are as bold as they are beautiful. From classic vintage refinement to cutting-edge jewelry innovations, there is truly a pearl ring out there for every style.

Baroque Pearls: The New Nonconformists of Fine Jewelry

Baroque pearls are the next nonconformists of the fine jewelry world. They take our traditional idea of what beauty is meant to be and turn it on its head — never a bad trait to have in any woman’s fashion arsenal. The result? An extraordinary new player that’s eye-catching, statement-making, and instantly cult-covetable.

The Times called baroque pearls the “fashionable gem of the moment.” These irregular shape pearls are appearing more and more everywhere from the red carpet to fringe festivals, and the best part is that every single one is completely different — a bit like snowflakes, except these beauties you can hold onto forever.

Let’s look at what makes these magnificent gems so special, and how to choose the ones that are right for you.

What are Baroque Pearls?

When you think of a classic pearl strand, you probably imagine a string of smooth, round, uniform spheres. There’s certainly a reason why these distinctive gems became such an integral part of our fashion history, but did you know that pearls can actually come in any shape?

Pearls are organic gemstones, meaning they come from a living thing (amber is another popular example of an organic gemstone). This means that every single one grows in its own unique way. Although pearl farmers are constantly trying to find ways to develop rounder, more perfect pearls in the oysters that they harvest from, the whims of nature still play a part. Some pearls will come out of their shells perfectly round, others will be slightly off-round or lopsided, and some will be different shapes completely.

baroque pearl jewelry

Baroque pearls come in a variety of forms, which we’ll talk about more below. They can be either cultured or natural. The vast majority of pearls on the jewelry market today are cultured pearls — that is, farmed pearls that were grown in controlled environments. Natural, or “wild” pearls, are ones that are found outside of pearl farms in the ocean or large bodies of freshwater. Because natural pearls aren’t grown without any sort of standardization or human intervention, almost all natural pearls will be baroque shapes.

These unusual shapes pack a lot of personality. What’s more, their uneven surfaces play with light in a way that often gives them a much more intense luster than we commonly see in round pearls. They exhibit some of the most stunning colors to be found in pearl jewelry, and each one is one of a kind.

How to Choose Baroque Pearls

Most pearls are graded based on the GIA’s seven pearl value factors: shape, luster, nacre quality, color, surface quality, size, and matching, or craftsmanship. Baroque pearls aren’t approached in quite the same way because they’re so different from standard round pearls.

Shape

When round pearls are evaluated, the first thing examiners look at is how spherical they are. Perfectly round pearls will always be worth more than lopsided, off-round pearls. When looking at baroque pearls, however, it’s more about how well balanced and visually pleasing the shape is. Shape in baroque pearls can vary a lot, and what one person finds beautiful might be different than what someone else likes. This is part of their unique magic.

Luster

This is one area where baroque pearls really shine — figuratively and literally. The surface of a baroque pearl is an expanse of little hills and valleys where layers of nacre gather and light reflects in a multitude of ways — not entirely dissimilar to how light passes through a diamond. As a result, most baroque pearls will exhibit very high luster with small pockets around its surface where the luster is truly spectacular. This is something that’s very difficult to achieve in round pearls.

Nacre Quality

Nacre is the pearlescent substance built up by the oyster around the pearl form – we recognize it as mother-of-pearl. When grading round pearls, the nacre quality refers to the thickness of the layer of nacre around the nucleus, or form in the center of the pearl. Some pearls have only a paper-thin layer of actual pearl substance around a center of shell or plastic. This makes them very susceptible to wearing down over a short amount of time. Others have thicker layers or, in the case of most freshwater pearls, will be pure nacre all the way through.

Baroque pearls, by their nature, are pearls that have deviated from their implanted nuclei. Either they grew independently — in which case, like freshwater pearls, they will be pure nacre all the way through — or they grew off and away from the center in a way that the pearl farmer didn’t plan on (in this necklace, you can see how the pearls started off as round before deciding to forge their own path). When this happens the nacre will likely be much thicker than on a traditional round pearl, and usually will be thicker in some spots than in others. This makes baroque pearls a more durable choice for everyday wear.

Color

Baroque pearls can come in any color that round pearls are found in. Depending on the variety and country of origin, this can include white, pink, peach, lavender, blue, gold, or black. Because of the concentrations of light and nacre across the surface, baroque pearls will often show much stronger body colors than round ones. Baroque pearls with very bold or unusual colors will usually command a higher value.

Surface Quality

Because baroque pearls are defined by their unusual shapes, surface quality isn’t evaluated as stringently as it is for round pearls. While the best round pearls will have smooth, unblemished surfaces, it’s expected that baroque pearls will have a lot of variation. The best baroque pearls should have surfaces that are smooth and unbroken by nicks and pockmarks.

Size

Like with round pearls, large baroque pearls will be worth more than smaller ones when all other quality factors are equal. Some of the most famous baroque pearls have been in substantial sizes that went on to become beautiful works of art.

Craftsmanship

This refers to the construction of the finished jewelry piece and how well matched the pearls are in shape, size, color, and quality. This is especially important in baroque pearl jewelry, because every one is so different.

In earrings, the baroque pearls should look like a matching pair with similar outlines — not twins, but certainly siblings. Necklaces should be made up of pearls with similar shapes that, though not identical, look like they were intended to be a matching set. Colors should be complementary and each pearl should bring out the best in the others. This is a huge challenge for jewelers, who often have to comb through hundreds of pearls to find sets that go well together.

Because baroque pearls are so endlessly varied, the most important thing is choosing the ones that you find most beautiful. Your new baroque pearl jewelry will be as unique as you are!

Types of Baroque Pearls

Now that you know about the grading characteristics of baroque pearls, we can explore some of the amazing variety of these mysterious gems.

Ringed

These are pearls that are formed with concentric growth circles around the pearl’s circumference. They look a little bit like ringed planets. You can find rings on any type of pearl, but they’re most common on pearls with a longer growth period such as South Seas and Tahitians.

Coin

These pearls are round and flat like a disc. They’re usually found in freshwater mussels and are a great, affordable option for unique pearl jewelry. They’re also popular in fashion design and can be used for beautiful buttons.

Drop

When perfectly symmetrical, drop pearls are in high demand for pendants and matching earring sets. These look like a drop of rain and are flattering on everyone. To be a true baroque, though, a drop pearl should be asymmetrical and organic looking. Here’s an example of a perfectly imperfect baroque drop pearl.

Rice

Usually found in freshwater mussels, these pearls began growing round and then began to dramatically elongate, giving them a shape like a grain of rice. They’re usually small and very lightweight, so they’re a great choice for a fun layered baroque pearl necklace.

Twin

Twinning happens when two bead nuclei get too close and begin to grow together, giving the finished pearl a bow tie effect. They’re not considered as desirable as other types of baroque pearls, but some jewelers use them very effectively in interlocking designs such as this one.

Freeform

The true baroque pearl, these gorgeous gems are all completely one of a kind. In jewelry, they guide the jeweler’s creative direction rather than the other way around. Most natural (uncultured) pearls will fall into this category. These pearls can take any shape under the sun and are made into the most unusual, spectacular designs.

Baroque Pearl Value

The value of baroque pearls spans as wide a range as the pearls themselves. For a baroque pearl pendant, you can expect to pay anywhere from around $100 up to an impressive $4.7m.

In general, the financial value of a baroque pearl comes down to two things:

  • how unique the pearl is in shape and size

Baroque Tahitian Cultured Pearl Necklace by Blue Nile

In earrings and necklaces, this means creating a unique, coherent family of matching pearls. In the case of single pearls, it means finding the best way to turn the gem into something truly extraordinary.

Rather than designing a piece and then finding a pearl to put in it, as is the case with most other jewelry items, often a jeweler will examine a baroque pearl to see what sort of story it tells. Then they’ll build up a new design around it — for instance, this gorgeous swan or this strapping merman. Baroque pearls open up a world of creativity for jewelers, which makes each piece a priceless, one of a kind treasure.

It’s worth noting that some jewelers who are either unscrupulous or just poorly trained might try to attach the word baroque to lower-quality off-round pearls. A true baroque pearl shouldn’t be able to be graded in the same way as standard round pearls – it should have very distinctive variations that make it something entirely different.

Baroque Pearl FAQ

How do you care for baroque pearls?

Like all pearls, baroque pearls are made up of delicate nacre that is susceptible to harsh chemicals like those found in perfume, hairspray, or body products. When exposed to these chemicals the nacre can wear down over time, dulling the luster of the pearl.

For this reason it’s recommended that you put on your pearls only after any body products have had a chance to settle down and evaporate. After wearing, they should be gently cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

Are baroque pearls fragile?

The substantial nacre of baroque pearls makes them a more durable choice for day to day wear than most round pearls. However, their unusual shapes mean that they can have small points or other less protected areas that are vulnerable to being knocked as you go about your day. If possible, try to wear them in a setting that protects the most vulnerable places, and avoid wearing baroque pearl rings when you know you’re going to be very active with your hands.

Do baroque pearls have resale value?

Most pearls, unfortunately, aren’t great as far as being an investment piece. Baroque pearls are usually purchased much more cheaply than round pearls and you’re unlikely to get much back for them if you decide to sell them at a later date. True natural pearls with reputable documentation are the exception to this.

The New Wave of Unique Pearls

As you can see, baroque pearls represent an entire world of lustrous possibility. They can be just about any shape you can imagine and they push the limits of what it’s possible for a pearl. Baroque pearls give jewelers a chance to challenge themselves as artists and create something entirely new, and they give jewelry lovers a chance to wear something that is completely and utterly unique.

Next time you’re pursuing the halls of a vintage boutique, keep your eyes peeled for these marvelous creations of nature – you never know what you mind find.

Note: Our friends at Minted.com sponsored this gifting endeavor, allowing us to bring you the most awesome newlywed gift ideas ever. You can bet these gift ideas are more unique than anything on the bride and groom’s wedding registry – and you’d better be ready with the tissues!

Choosing awesome gifts for your favorite newlyweds that aren’t on their registry can be like walking a gifting tightrope.

But if you misjudge by one centimeter, you may very well plummet to the depths of mediocrity, and your gift will be lost in the sands of time.

If this seems a little extra, it’s because I have a penchant for the dramatic. Also, I thought it would be a good way to get your attention and illustrate just how much thought we put into curating our gift guides.

The Cushion Cut Diamond Guide for your Perfect Engagement Ring

A glittering descendant of the old mine cut diamond and the soft, feminine princess cut diamond, cushion cut diamonds have a long, romantic history. They come in third place as the most popular diamond cut for an engagement ring, after round cut diamonds and princess cuts.

Shopping for these soft-featured shapes can be a challenge, though – the terms “cushion cut” or “cushion diamond” actually encompass a pretty wide range of shapes and faceting styles. Let’s look at some of the things to explore when shopping for a cushion cut diamond.

What is a Cushion Cut Diamond?

A cushion cut diamond is a shape that hovers in between worlds: not quite a round diamond nor a square cut one, something with aspects of both brilliant and radiant style diamond cuts that also manages to be something entirely unique.

Generally, a cushion cut is described as a square diamond with gently rounded corners, much like a pillow (hence the name). The sides will often be gently curved as well, adding to its softness while still retaining a little of that geometric shape. Most cushion cuts are more or less equal by length and width, but some are more rectangular — these are called “elongated cushions”.

cushion cut diamond ring
Hidden Halo Cushion Cut Diamond Engagement Ring by Blue Nile

You might recognize this rounded square shape from its predecessor, the old mine cut (which later became the old European cut, and then finally the classic round brilliant as we know it today). The cushion and the round brilliant are two sides of the same coin – two paths taken by diamond cutters who were looking for ways to improve their craft and create a gem that showed all the glittering potential the rough stone had to offer.

Contrary to the round brilliant, the cushion cut diamond more closely follows the natural outline of a diamond in the rough. This gives it a more intimate, natural appearance while keeping the price more affordable since less of the stone is lost during the manufacturing process. The cushion cut diamond may be simply faceted or given extra facets to improve its sparkle.

Tips for Buying a Cushion Cut Diamond

Before looking at quality considerations such as the 4Cs (more on those a little farther down), you’ll want to have a clear idea of what sort of cushion cut diamond engagement ring is perfect for you. When shopping for these unique gems, you’ll hear a lot of terminology being thrown around: standard cushion cut, modified cushion cut, brilliant cut, chunky cut, and crushed ice cut, among others.

Different Cushion Cuts

Standard Cushion Cut/Brilliant Cushion

Standard cushion cuts most closely resemble the beauty of round brilliant cut diamonds, in that their faceting arrangement is brighter and more distinct. These are sometimes called “cushion brilliants” or “chunky cuts”. You’ll be able to see light bouncing off the bright and dark areas of the stone, forming a beautiful pattern of light and shadow.

Modified Cushion/Crushed Ice Cut

A modified cushion cut is one that’s been cut with extra facets, usually in the pavilion (the lower half of the diamond). The pavilion main facets (those are the long, arrow-like ones that extend all the way from the girdle to the very bottom) might be shortened to make space for more glittering little windows. There are a few different arrangements that diamond cutters can use depending on the potential they see in that particular rough stone, but all of them give the diamond a fantastic sparkling effect called “crushed ice”.

Sometimes called “crushed glass” or “broken glass” (which doesn’t sound quite as nice), these diamonds sparkle with an array of tiny pinpoints of light. Contrary to the standard brilliant cushion cut, this pattern of light and shadow is not as distinct. It resembles the soft way light plays across moving water.

Some people — both jewelry retailers and consumers — have very strong opinions about whether the brilliant cushion cut or the crushed ice cut is a better value. The truth is that it’s simply a matter of what is most beautiful to you. Both are stunning in their own way.

Cushion Cut Diamond Grading

Once you’ve decided what sort of cushion cut diamond you want to look for, let’s see how the 4Cs can help you find the most beautiful diamond possible for the best value.

Cut

In the past, we’ve talked about how important it is to choose a shape, or cutting style, for your diamond. Once you’ve gotten to know the difference between standard and modified cushion cut diamonds, you’ll need to examine how expertly the gem cutter put together this particular design.

An ideal length to width ratio for a square cushion cut diamond is between 1:1 and 1.05:1. If you want an elongated cushion cut diamond, look for ratios between 1.15:1 and 1.20:1. Be wary of the “grey zone” between 1.05 and 1.15. These diamonds tend to look a bit awkwardly shaped, not quite square but not quite anything else, either.

When evaluating the cut of a cushion cut diamond, look at the outline of the diamond. Make sure the corners are neither too sharp nor too blunt, that the sides curve gently without bulging, and that each side is perfectly symmetrical. You’ll also want to check that the table (that’s the large facet on top) is centered right in the middle of the stone and is even on all sides and that the lower facets sparkle in a pleasing, consistent manner. Facets that are uneven will affect the way the light passes through the stone, making the whole diamond look distracting and unfinished.

Color

Cushion cut diamonds tend to show off colors more readily than round cut diamonds, so it’s advisable to choose one that’s higher on the D-Z color scale. White gold, in particular, will show more yellow, brown, and grey tones in the diamond, so when choosing a white gold setting it’s recommended you pair it with a colorless diamond (D-F). If you’ve chosen a setting in yellow or rose gold, you can go down to a near-colorless diamond (G-J) and it will still look bright and clear.

Clarity

While cushion cuts aren’t the best at hiding off colors, they are great at hiding clarity characteristics such as blemishes and inclusions. This is particularly true of crushed ice diamonds, whose tight, watery facets will render most clarity characteristics invisible. When choosing a standard cushion cut diamond, the best value is between VS1 and SI1. For a crushed ice diamond, VS2 to I1.

It can be difficult to see the final effect from a plotted diagram though, so if you’re considering a diamond in a lower clarity grade, it’s best to see it in person if you can. Otherwise, request detailed, high quality photos and videos from multiple angles to see the effect the clarity characteristics have on the stone.

Carat Weight

While carat weight is an objective unit of measurement (one carat is equal to 0.2 grams, or a fifth of a gram), as we’ve seen, cushion cut diamonds are not a standardized cut. This means that you can have two cushion cut diamonds with exactly the same carat weight that look like slightly different sizes face up.

In general, cushion cut diamonds are cut a little bit deeper than round diamonds and so appear smaller for their carat weight. It doesn’t help that our eye naturally examines shapes by their longest direction. On a square shape, this is the diagonal. Because the corners of the cushion cut are blunted, it will appear smaller to us than, for example, a princess cut.

Many modified cushion cuts are a little heavy for their size because their faceting arrangement uses more of the rough stone. However, the lower amount of wasted material translates into a lower per-carat price for the consumer. This, in addition to the lower demand, means that cushion cut diamonds are usually around 25% cheaper per carat than comparable round brilliant diamonds.

Cushion Cut Diamond FAQ

How Much Do Cushion Cut Diamonds Cost?

Like other fancy shapes, cushion cut diamonds sell at a lower price point than round brilliant diamonds. In addition to being the most popular diamond shape on the market, round brilliants aren’t a particularly efficient use for the rough gem — more rough stone is lost in the cutting process than with any other shape. Cushion cuts, on the other hand, use the natural octahedral shape of the diamond to its best advantage.

While cushion cuts are well-loved and remain in fashion year after year, they’re more specialized than round brilliants and so don’t sell as reliably in jewelry stores. Depending on the quality, cushion cut diamonds can sell for 20-40% less than comparable round diamonds. A 1ct. cushion cut diamond of fine quality ranges from about $2000 – $6000, while smaller cushion cuts between thirty and fifty points (0.30 and 0.50 carats) range from $500 to $1500.

Which Settings Pair Best With Cushion Cut Diamonds?

Cushion cut diamonds look great in both vintage and contemporary settings. Their soft, antique-inspired edges are a natural match with halo, pavé, and filigree styles. However, they’re just as stunning in prong set solitaires that make the sparkle and fire of the cushion cut the center of attention. Whether you choose a classic brilliant cut cushion or a “crushed ice” diamond that glitters like sunlight on the sea, you’ll want a setting that elevates its unique beauty and helps it light up a room.

What does the cushion cut diamond symbolize?

The cushion cut symbolizes effortless elegance, the gift of carrying the traditions of a more romantic age into a bright new future and making them look like they belong there — much like red lipstick, or a little black dress.

Do cushion cut diamonds sparkle?

A well cut cushion diamond does sparkle immensely, though it’s the stone’s colored fire that really commands attention. Cushion cut diamonds are known for displaying more multicolored light dispersion or “fire” than any other diamond shape. This makes it a favorite with women who want to carry a little pizazz with them in their day-to-day life.

Are cushion cut diamonds trendy?

They are actually, having been recently seen on celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Leighton Meester, and Priyanka Chopra and gaining more and more attention worldwide. However, when choosing your forever diamond, we recommend focusing less on the latest headlines and more on finding a timeless, elegant design that fits your personality and will always be in style.

How should I care for a cushion cut diamond?

Because of their soft lines and rounded edges, cushion cuts are actually one of the most durable diamond shapes available. They’re a great choice for everyday wear and for very active women. They’re not completely indestructible, however, so choose a setting that offers some protection from any impact.

It’s also very important to keep your cushion cut engagement ring clean — all those glittering facets won’t reflect any light if they’re covered in dust. Use a soft, clean cloth or a baby toothbrush to keep your diamond ring sparkling.

Cushion Cut Diamonds: A Vast Array of Choices

You can see why cushion cuts have been such a popular choice throughout history, from their early inceptions as the old mine cut through to the brilliant cut, and then later to the extraordinarily magical “crushed ice” look.

Because there’s such a wide range of cushion cuts, they do require a little more patience when shopping, and it might take you a while to settle into the gem that’s truly right for you (not so unlike looking for the perfect partner…). But when you do, it’s undeniable that cushion cuts are a timeless, unique, and versatile thing of beauty.

The Ultimate Guide To Freshwater Pearls for Your Unique Style

Any time you are shopping for pearls, the focus should always be on selecting pearls that reflect your personal taste. However, unlike natural cultured or imitation pearls which have only one color and shape, freshwater pearls offer something truly spectacular for every style and budget.

Freshwater pearls are the great shapeshifters of the fine jewelry world. Their broad range of shapes, qualities, and colors can make things pretty confusing for consumers. Let’s look at what these jewels have to offer and how to choose the ones that are right for you.

What is a Freshwater Pearl?

When you think of a classic strand of pearls, what comes to mind? A uniform, gently glowing cream-colored cascade? A string of effervescent, multicolored beads of light? Or maybe a motley row of bending, twisting, undulating gems reminiscent of the waves of the sea itself? Freshwater pearls can be all of these things.

A freshwater pearl is a real pearl that originates in freshwater bodies such as lakes, ponds, and rivers. They’re cultivated in freshwater mussels such as Hyriopsis cumingi and Hyriopsis schlegeli, which are completely different species from the saltwater oysters that other pearls (such as akoyas, Tahitians, and South Seas) are cultivated in.

Pearl Farming and Production

The pearl farming process for freshwater pearls is similar to that of saltwater pearls, with one very important difference. Like on saltwater pearl farms, a trained technician will surgically implant a small starter seed into the body of the mussel (or oyster, in the case of saltwater pearls). This small piece of foreign matter encourages the mussel to begin isolating it with layer upon layer of glossy, pearlescent nacre — what we sometimes call mother-of-pearl.

The key difference is what kind of seed is used. In akoya, Tahitian, and South sea oysters, the farmer will insert a piece of biological tissue along with a perfectly round bead, usually made out of shell or plastic. There was a time when these were made out of gold, but since it was too difficult to drill a hole through solid gold to string it on a necklace, they weren’t very practical.

This inserted “starter” is called the nucleus. The tissue will encourage the oyster to begin the nacre formation and the bead gives them a form to build up the pearl around. This is why so many saltwater pearls are perfectly round.

Freshwater Pearl Development

With freshwater pearls, the process is a little different. These pearls receive an implanted tissue irritant, but no bead nucleus…most of the time. Larger freshwater pearls, called Edisons, are being introduced onto the jewelry market with a bead nucleus, but these are still quite new and experimental. Fireball pearls are also bead nucleated.

As the freshwater nacre grows over a period of 2-7 years, the tissue, being organic matter, dissolves. This leaves a gem behind that is pure pearl all the way through.

Without a form to grow on, however, the pearl is left to the whims of nature. Sometimes it may grow into a perfectly sound sphere, but not very often. It might be oval, drop shaped, knobbly (these are called “potato pearls”), or something with no shape at all, like a paint splotch. These are called “baroque pearls”.

How Rare Are Freshwater Pearls?

It’s a common misconception that freshwater pearls are synonymous with “low quality”. This is largely for two reasons: the first, as we’ve seen, is that the majority of pearls that come from freshwater mussels are less desirable off-round shapes. The second is that there are a lot more of these than there are pearls of any other kind.

On saltwater pearl farms, oysters are nearly always implanted with one single bead nucleus per harvest period, though akoyas can sometimes take two. After a waiting period of between six months and four years, depending on the oyster species, the finished pearl is removed, cleaned, and set into jewelry.

On the other hand, freshwater mussels can grow up to fifty pearls at the same time. Most of these will be fairly low grade, which means that there is a huge amount of low quality freshwater pearls saturating the market at any given moment. Because of this, some might assume that freshwater pearls are incredibly common and always low quality. However, the best quality freshwater pearls can easily rival akoya pearls in both beauty and rarity.

How to Choose Freshwater Pearls

All pearls are graded with the GIA’s seven pearl value factors: shape, luster, color, nacre thickness, surface quality, size, and quality of the finished jewelry item (called make, matching, or craftsmanship). Freshwater pearls are graded on a scale of A-AAA, and usually a fourth, superior grade. Different jewelers may use different terms for this, but words you might hear are Gem Grade, AAAA, Freshwater Orient, and Freshadama.

Shape

This is probably the most integral when evaluating freshwater pearls because, as we’ve seen, freshwater pearls come in a wide array of different shapes. Perfectly round pearls are the most sought after, and the most rare — only about 1% of all freshwater pearls produced are perfect spheres. This makes round freshwater pearls even more rare than round akoyas.

Drop-shaped pearls are also popular choices for pendants and earrings, particularly if they’re even and symmetrical. The next most valuable would be oval or “rice-shaped” pearls, followed by more jazzy baroque shapes.

Luster

Luster is the way light reflects off the layers of nacre that make up the pearl. This shows itself as a reflective glow on the pearl’s surface. Akoya pearls are known for their sharp, high-contrast reflections, while freshwater and south sea pearls are both characterized by their softer, satin-like luster reminiscent of moonlight on water.

When evaluating the luster of a pearl, look at the lines around the reflections shown on its surface — they should be sharp and easy to spot. A pearl with good luster will also have high contrast between the lighter and darker areas, whereas on a pearl with poor luster the light and dark spaces will begin to blend together.

While the luster on a freshwater pearl will never be as sharp and vibrant as the surface of an akoya pearl, the best freshwater pearls will be bright, high-contrast, and show reflections clearly and distinctly.

Color

Color is where freshwater pearls really come into their own. These gems come in a wider range of body colors than any other pearl. They can be found in classic white, pink (a true rosy pink, unlike the subtle pink overtones on some akoya pearls), peach, and even lavender (like our namesake!).

While white pearls will always be a reliable choice for jewelers, many will string different colored pearls together on a multicolor strand. Sometimes these are paired with Tahitian and South Sea pearls as well, creating a string of pearls with every color of the rainbow.

White freshwater pearls with rose or silver overtones are the most valuable, followed by lavender and then pink and peach. When looking at colored pearls, richer, more vivid colors will sell for more than paler ones.

Nacre Thickness

Because freshwater pearls have no nucleus, their nacre isn’t examined the same way it is with saltwater pearls — it’s assumed that the nacre continues all the way through (Edison pearls are, of course, the exception to this). This already gives freshwater pearls a leg above all the other types, because their pure nacre makes them much more durable. It also makes them the closest thing to natural pearls.

Surface Quality

Surface quality is another big one for pearls of all varieties, including freshwater. It’s a little like looking at clarity in diamonds – it refers to how smooth and consistent the surface of the pearl is. Many pearls, both natural and cultured, will have little interruptions in the growing process. These show up as pockmarks, dents, or ripples in the surface that we call blemishes.

While these are a natural part of this organic gem and they show that your pearl is real, having too many of them becomes distracting and detracts from the pearl’s beauty. The best quality pearl necklaces should have no more than one or two blemishes on the entire strand. Single pearls, such as those in rings or earrings, shouldn’t have any at all.

Size

Size is an indication of value in pearls, though not necessarily of quality. Freshwater pearls can range from 3mm up to about 15mm in diameter. When all other value factors are equal, larger pearls will sell for higher prices than smaller ones. However, if a small pearl is perfectly round and has excellent luster, surface quality, and a beautiful color, it will always sell for more than a large, dull, off round pearl.

Make

More than just the pearl, or pearls, the make refers to the quality of the finished piece. In a necklace, this involves the following factors:

  • making sure the knotting is tight in between each pearl
  • checking that the pearls are well matched in size, shape, and color
  • gradient sizes increase smoothly and subtly
  • the colors should be well balanced and pleasing to the eye (in multicolor strands)

In earrings, brooches, and rings, you will want to make sure that all pearls and any other stones the piece is using fit together as a unified whole.

Freshwater Pearls vs Akoyas

Which is the better pearl? Which is better value? Is one more “real” than the other? These are all valid questions to ask about two very similar gems. At their best, they’re both round, creamy, and lustrous, both icons of a classic vintage elegance. You’ll get some some strong conflicting opinions about which one is the better choice, but here are a few key differences.

Nacre

Nacre thickness is one very important difference that puts a point solidly in the court of Team Freshwater: freshwater pearls are pure nacre. That is, pure pearl all the way through. Akoyas, by contrast, actually contain very little real pearl — only a thin coating around the bead nucleus. In addition to the solid nacre making freshwater pearls much more of a durable choice for everyday wear, it’s also much more like the pearls you find growing wild in a natural environment.

Luster

Freshwater pearls took the lead, but akoya pearls are coming up fast. When it comes to luster, nothing in nature glows quite like an akoya pearl. Pearls born in the akoya oyster have sharp, brilliant reflections that have made them the connoisseur’s choice for pearl jewelry for generations. Freshwater pearls, on the other hand, naturally have a luster that is much softer and more muted.

Color

While color is an individual choice, it’s undeniable that freshwater pearls have a wider range to offer. Both freshwater and akoyas are available in classic white, and you can also get freshwaters in an array of glorious pastel tones. Akoyas come predominantly in white as well as yellow and, rarely, silver or blue. So which color range is best? Well, we believe its the one that looks best on you. We’re going to call this one a tie.

Price

Here, freshwater pearls really surge ahead. While both freshwater and akoya pearls come in a range of qualities and price points, akoya pearl jewelry commands much higher prices. This is largely cultural – even the best freshwater pearls sell for around the lower range of akoya pearls. Freshwater pearls are by far the more budget-friendly option.

Providence

We’re pulling up neck and neck here. Due to the rarity, history, and prestige of akoya pearls, and the fact that gem grade freshwater pearls are a relatively new addition to the market, akoya pearls are considered much more luxurious than their freshwater counterparts. Even when no one can tell the difference, you might find that attitudes change a little when you mention that you’re wearing freshwater pearls. Akoya pearls are indisputably the more desirable and prestigious option.

The verdict? It’s a tie! Freshwater pearls are great for more regular wear, and for experimenting with funky new styles without breaking the bank. Akoyas are more of an investment piece for special occasion wear.

Freshwater Pearl Value

As we’ve seen, freshwater pearls are usually a lower priced option than saltwater pearl varieties. This is because the vast majority of them are not of very good quality — you can get real, genuine freshwater pearls for only a couple of dollars at beading or craft stores. These will usually be artificially color treated, potato-shaped, and heavily marked on their surfaces. None of this, however, means that they aren’t real pearls. This is what has given rise to the myth that freshwater pearls aren’t worth very much.

Triple-Strand Freshwater Cultured Pearl Strand Necklace
Triple-Strand Freshwater Cultured Pearl Strand Necklace by Blue Nile

For a good quality freshwater pearl necklace, you can expect to spend anywhere between $250 and $3000. Simple stud earrings can go from $99 to $500. A gem grade freshwater strand will hold up better over time than other pearl varieties, so you can enjoy them for years to come.

This is good news, since freshwater pearls don’t have a very good resale value. If you’re looking to part ways with your pearl jewelry, or maybe you want to upgrade to a better quality piece, you may be better off giving your pre-loved pearls as a gift rather than trying to sell them off.

Freshwater Pearl FAQ

How do you care for freshwater pearls?

Though they are lovely, pearls in general do take a bit of TLC in order to maintain their beauty and luster.

Pearls should never be worn in the shower — not because it poses any danger to the pearl itself, but because water, shampoos, and other body products can damage the delicate silk threading on pearl necklaces and the hardware of earrings and rings. Care should be taken to keep pearls away from harsh chemicals like those in hairspray or perfumes.

If you’re planning on wearing pearls for a night out, it’s best to put them on just before leaving, after other products have had a chance to settle in. After you take them off, use a clean, soft cloth to remove any natural skin oils or cosmetic residue.

Are freshwater pearls real?

Yes! Freshwater pearls are a very real type of cultured pearl — that is, farmed pearls that have been harvested from oyster and mussel farms under controlled conditions. They’re not the same as what the industry calls “natural” pearls, which are pearls found out in the wild. Both natural and cultured pearls are considered real.

What’s the difference between freshwater and saltwater pearls?

The only real difference between freshwater and saltwater pearls is the species of shellfish they come from. Saltwater pearls from certain kinds of oysters, and freshwater pearls from freshwater mussels. In addition, there are certain differences in the farming techniques for these pearls — saltwater pearls are almost always grown around an implanted bead nucleus, whereas most (but not all) freshwater pearls are grown from only a piece of organic tissue.

Can freshwater pearls be dyed?

Yes, freshwater pearls are often treated with dyes or radiation to create fun colors not naturally found in these types of pearls. Black, gold, and vibrant pink are some of the treated colors you might see in dyed and irradiated pearls.

What is a fireball pearl?

This fascinating type of baroque pearl was created quite by accident, when Chinese pearl farmers tried inserting a bead into the freshwater mussel after the first pearl had already been harvested. What they ended up with was a round pearl, much like an akoya, only with an extraordinary excess of nacre on one side much like a comet’s trail. These pearls have become a cult collector’s item, and each one is one of a kind.

Your Pearl Style

One of the more polarizing gems in the fine jewelry industry, freshwater pearls have some of the most devoted aficionados around. Known for their pure, unfiltered luster and their extraordinary colors, these pearls are an astonishingly affordable marvel to add to your collection. Plus, the range of sizes, colors, and shapes means you’ll never run out of covetable ideas for your next pearl jewelry splurge.

Whether you’re buying your first “starter pearl” necklace or your fortieth, freshwater pearls will never go out of style.

Perfume / Cologne

Cologne bottles

Cologne is a classic gift for men and for good reason. After all, what’s more scintillating and sexy than a man that smells as good as he looks?!

The trick when it comes to gifting cologne is simple, but not always easy: find a scent you both love. Sure, it’s a gift for him, so he has to love how it smells, but let’s be honest, you want it to turn you on too.

My husband has a rather vast collection of colognes – some are spicy, some are woodsy, some have a fresher, subtler scent. Clearly, he likes variety. Some men, however, gravitate towards one type of scent – you can get a clue from checking out his deodorant, aftershave, and cologne preferences. Even if he’s only into one scent profile, I reckon you can find a cologne that you both love.

If it were up to me, I’d choose Acqua Di Gio by Georgio Armani every single time. I just can’t get enough of that scent!

If you want to take it up a notch, get him a slim and stylish wallet that can also help protect his identity. Gift Basket for Men

Gift Basket for Men

The gift basket has long been a go-to gift for folks looking to give someone special a little bit of everything. This is why, if you’re running out of ideas, we think it’s a great way to go.

For example… even a man who has everything can never have enough snacks. And what goes great with snacks? Beer. A gift basket of edible items is the perfect way to show him your love without cluttering your home.

It’s a great option for minimalists, it’s a non-traditional option for non-traditional couples, and it’s a gift you can both enjoy (if they share!)

Good Pajamas

Men's Modal PJ Set

If your husband is like many, he doesn’t do designated jammies. He’s very possibly more of a boxer or basketball shorts and t-shirt kind of guy.

And that’s fine, but there’s nothing quite like a pair of really nice jammies for lounging around on a slow Sunday morning.

Many companies makes pajamas that’ll seriously spoil him with uber soft fabrics and details made for comfort – from the elastic waistband to the notch collar neckline.

Pick a pair or two for him. Then, if he loves them, grab a few more so he can keep the comfy PJs around all the time.

Here are a few options:

Fancy Long by Emporio Armani

Fancy short by Lacoste

Cooling by Bamboo Cool

Ultra soft by U2SKIIN

Other Gift Ideas That Won’t Cost You

We love a gift that is frugal but still fabulous, and chances are your guy will too! You don’t have to spend a small fortune to show him how much he means to you, just take a cue from one of these budget-friendly anniversary gift ideas.

  • Frame your favorite memories. Print some photos and frame them or make an album. It’s so cheap to print out your favorite moments, then DIY a frame or compile them into a vintage thrift store album.
  • Breakfast in bed. I mean, who wouldn’t want a tray full of delicious food and a steaming mug of coffee delivered directly to their bed? Remember the whole “way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” thing?
  • Cook a special meal. Speaking of his stomach now is the time to show off your culinary skills! Let him sit back and be impressed as you whip up a delicious meal.
  • Bake some cookies or cupcakes. He would probably love a sweet treat, but this is also a really fun activity to do together.
  • Write a love letter. Sometimes it’s the simple things that mean the most. You don’t need to be Shakespeare, just tell him how you really feel!
  • Romantic evening. The options here are endless, and you can likely use a lot of things you already have on hand. Bubble bath, a movie, a delicious meal…whatever you’re into!
  • DIY an amazing gift. There are quite a few gifts that you can make completely on your own. Like a mixtape…or I guess now it would be a playlist, but if you’re still down for burning a CD, go for it! You can also make a painting, draw something, scrapbook meaningful moments from your relationship, or hand-make a card. DIY anniversary gifts are often the sweetest and most heartfelt gifts of all!
  • Attend a free cultural event in your city. How many free things does your community put on a month? Probably a lot. Go to a pop-up art show, browse a food festival, or drop in on a free concert. Pack a picnic and a blanket and just enjoy each other’s company, completely free of charge.

Fun to Functional and Everything In Between

We feel like giving anniversary gifts to your boyfriend is kind of a new trend, and we’re totally here for it! Usually, the guys are the ones scrambling to come up with thoughtful cards and romantic dates. It’s about time we show him how much we care and how thankful we are for all the times he’s reached the cereal off the top shelf, and changed our car oil, and driven across town to pick up our favorite ice cream.

You know your man best – show him just how well with the perfect boyfriend anniversary gift.
