A Buying Guide to Types of Pearls – Akoya, Freshwater, Tahitian Pearls and More!

Even if you’ve never watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s, you’ve undoubtedly seen the iconic movie cover featuring Audrey Hepburn decked out in a layered necklace of pearls and black evening dress. A beauty bedazzled in beautiful jewelry never goes out of style.

While Hepburn certainly helped immortalize white pearls, it turns out that there are many types of pearls and they come in all sorts of colours. Plus, they’re in a league of their own as jewelry pieces, given that they’re grown in the water by shelled mollusks.

What other gems can say the same?

If you’re searching for the perfect piece of pearl jewelry (30th anniversary gift anyone!?) or are simply pearl-curious, keep reading!

We’ve put together a guide on everything pearl-related, so you can get a handle on the types of pearls available for purchase, their symbolism, what to look for when shopping for pearl jewelry, and more.

Guide to ‘Everything Pearls’

Most folks don’t realize there are different types of pearls. When you think about pearls, what comes to mind? Probably a white pearl necklace, right? Or, you know, maybe a black pearl necklace comes to mind if you’re into Pirates of the Caribbean.

But what about the brilliant pink pearls hailing from the lakes and rivers of China? Or the blue pearls of Tahiti? They deserve the same love and recognition.

What Colors Do Pearls Come In?

Pearls come in more colors than most people realize. If you know where to look, especially in the many rivers, lakes, and oceans around the world, you will find:

Colored Pearl Strands
  • White Pearls
  • Black Pearls
  • Golden Pearls
  • Chocolate Pearls (sadly, not edible, but still beautiful!)
  • Pink Pearls
  • Lavender Pearls

The list goes on. There are as many pearl color types as colors in the rainbow, and perhaps a few more we have yet to discover.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Pearls

As we previously mentioned, it’s wholly possible to find oyster – and thus pearls – in lakes and rivers, which are typically freshwater sources, or in the oceans, which are saltwater. Each body of water produces unique properties in pearls, which we categorize as saltwater pearls or freshwater pearls.

Freshwater Pearl — As the name would suggest, these pearls grow in freshwater lakes, rivers, and ponds—typically in China—and come in a variety of shapes and sizes in mostly pastel colors. Most freshwater pearls do not feature a bead nuclear, which produces a thicker nacre (i.e. the material pearls are made from).

Saltwater Pearl Necklace

Saltwater Pearl — Conversely, the saltwater pearl, including Akoya cultured pearls from Japan and China, grow in saltwater oceans and produce the largest pearls in the world. They range from 9mm to 29mm and are typically white, cream, or golden-colored. However, some come in black, gray, blue, green, and purple.

But freshwater vs. saltwater pearls is not the only distinction when talking about ocean gems.

Natural vs. Cultured Pearls

Are natural pearls common today? Unfortunately, no. Quite a long time ago, many natural pearls were discovered in the Persian Gulf. Once found, these pearls were harvested to near-extinction levels. Today, you can purchase natural pearls but they will cost you an arm and a leg.

On the other hand, we now have access to cultured pearls, which are far more commonplace and readily available for a reasonable price. Ironic, isn’t it? The ‘cultured’ pearls are the commoners, while the natural pearl is for high-society!

A cultured pearl is grown on a farm (like salmon), where the mollusks are raised to the appropriate levels until they accept a mother-of-pearl bead nucleus. The entire process is complicated and delicate. An experienced technician surgically implants the bead, then returns the mollusk to the water and waits for the pearl to grow.

Unfortunately, not all mollusks will produce a pearl. Some may produce a pearl but not one of high quality. It can often take over 10,000 pearls to create a single pearl necklace, as many are discarded due to their quality.

Types of Cultured Pearls

There are four main types of cultured pearls.

  • Akoya Cultured Pearls — The Akoya pearl is the most common type of saltwater cultured pearls sold in the United States. Most come in white or cream color and hail from Japan and China, where farms cultivate the Akoya oyster.
  • South Sea Cultured Pearl — You will find South Sea cultured pearls hailing from Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, where the white, silver or golden South Sea pearl is plentiful in size and availability.
Tahitian Black Pearl Necklace
  • Tahitian Cultured Pearl — While not solely from Tahiti, the Tahitian pearl stems from the French Polynesian islands, where they cultivate black, gray, brown, blue, green, purple, and pink saltwater pearls.
  • Freshwater Cultured Pearls — The most common cultured pearls are freshwater pearls, which are available in a broad range of sizes, shapes, and colors. Most come from China’s freshwater cultivation farms.

How is Pearl Quality Determined?

We all know pearls are graded by their quality, but how?

A pearl’s quality is determined by the following factors:

  • whether it is natural or cultured
  • size and shape
  • color and luster
  • luster
  • surface quality
  • nacre thickness & quality
  • matching capabilities

And what’s meant by matching capabilities? Well, when you purchase a piece of jewelry with multiple pearls, you want them to match in size and color, so pearls that are easy to match are more valuable.

Because of their larger pearl size and the extreme skill needed to aid in their growth, the South Sea pearl can be considered the most valuable on our list. The highest quality ones come in either a golden or pure white tone. They can also be found in an array of other hues such as silver, blue, or green.

What are the Rarest Pearls?

Generally speaking, conch pearls are among the rarest in the world. They are non-nacreous pearls, which we cannot cultivate in farms, and may only grow in one of every 10,000 Queen conch mollusks.

Due to their rarity and brilliant, soft pink coloring, the value of a pea-sized conch pearl is often $120,000 or more.

However, in the entire world, the rarest pearl is the Melo Melo Pearl, a natural, non-nacreous pearl formed via a sea snail. Its surface features swirling patterns of light mixed with an iconic orange coloring common to Vietnam.

Which Pearls Are the Most Expensive and Which Are the Most Budget-Friendly?

If we’re talking about purchasing pearls for jewelry, knowing which will fit within your budget is key. But know this first: high-quality pearls range in price from $300 to $1500 apiece. Now, that’s not to say you’ll pay that much for a piece of jewelry. Most pearl jewelry uses typical pearls, which are less pricey but no less beautiful.

As mentioned above, the most expensive pearls hail from the South Sea. On the other hand, the most budget-friendly pearls are of the freshwater variety, of which you may purchase a pearl strand necklace for about a hundred dollars.

Pearls as Gifts

Pearls are a wonderful gift for any special occasion.

Why? Because on top of their natural beauty, pearls are memorable. How often do you open a birthday gift to discover pearls inside? They are timelessly charming. Cue Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Symbolism and Superstition

With a long and storied history, it’s no surprise that pearls are steeped in symbolism and superstitions.

Pearls are said to symbolize wisdom, serenity, and purity. If you offer pearls as a gift, they are meant to strengthen relationships and convey safety to the receiver.

Pearl Necklace Gift Box

Like most jewelry, pearls also convey superstition We often consider pearls tokens of love and affection, but they are also said to provide luck. Many myths suggest pearls symbolize fortune and wealth.

On the other hand, some superstitions suggest that pearls symbolize tears and thus should not be worn on an engagement ring. Yet other superstitions suggest that pearls worn by a bride symbolize the tears she will cry, and thus ensure a happy marriage and life, with the pearls acting as an absorber of bad luck.

When are Pearls the Perfect Gift?

Pearls make the most sense whenever you feel the occasion calls for an extravagant, memorable, and beautiful gift. We most often see pearls offered as presents for an anniversary gift, birthday, Mother’s Day, and even around the holiday season.

Really, there is no wrong time to give pearls as gifts, but since they can represent a significant investment, it’s usually best to gift them when there’s an especially significant occasion to celebrate.

Pearls are a gift that can be kept and passed down through generations, so it is important to choose the right time and place.

What to Consider When Gifting Pearls

Before you take a trip to the jewelry store in search of a pearl necklace, know your recipient. Like all other forms of jewelry, buying pearls a

Budget — Set a reasonable budget and stick to it. If you’re on a tighter budget, jewelry made with freshwater pearls is your best bet.

Age — The age of the recipient matters. Is your daughter too young to appreciate or care for a set of pearls? Perhaps a full necklace isn’t the best way forward, but a pair of pearl earrings might just be the perfect gift.

Style — Does your recipient put a lot of effort into their personal style? Is it more casual and comfortable, or classy and extravagant? If the latter reigns true, then pearls are a good choice. If you know your recipient dresses up for parties or dinners, then pearls will make an exceptional, memorable present.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know a bit more about the various types of pearls, or ocean gems, perhaps it’s time to surprise someone in your life with a piece of pearl jewelry. A unique necklace strung using high-quality, white, or cream-colored pearls is sure to elicit many ‘ooohs’ and ‘ahhhhs’.

Make an already special day even more so with perfect pearls!

7 Stylish Leather Camera Bags + Shopping Guide

We’re guessing a chic and high-quality leather camera bag is hanging in every jet-setting celebrity’s impressive closet. After all, if we want to capture all the fun of press junkets in exotic places and vacations on private islands, it has to be done with style.

Luckily, there are plenty of leather camera bags that look like a million bucks for those of us who don’t have private islands but still want to capture life’s moments on film!

A good camera bag’s function is to organize and protect your photography equipment while making it easy to carry wherever you choose to roam. The team at L&L has rounded up seven leather camera bags that fit the bill, and they do it with style in spades.

We’ll also throw a little education your way on how to shop for a quality bag. So sit back, relax, and get ready to do some shopping!

Camera Bag Types

What kind of camera are you traveling with? This will most likely make a difference in what bag you choose.

We stuck with DSLR bags for the most part because that’s the most common type of camera people use (even though some camera-nerds would say DSLR cameras are becoming obsolete), but a mirrorless camera bag and an SLR camera bag are included on the list, too.

Mirrorless Cameras – These are smaller than DSLR cameras, so the casing inside your bag should fit accordingly to protect a more compact camera. You’ll probably need an additional pocket or two for extra batteries, as they tend to burn through them pretty quickly.

DSLR Cameras – They’re not as compact as mirrorless cameras, so you’ll need a larger bag for your DSLR camera and its’ lenses. DSLR cameras range from smaller models to larger, professional-grade cameras. It’s helpful to know roughly the dimensions of your camera when choosing a DSLR bag.

SLR Cameras – Are often not much different in size from DSLR cameras, but some are more compact and sleek in design. This factors into how large your camera bag will need to be, of course. Again, estimate the dimensions of your camera before bag shopping.

Other Cameras, Other Bags – There are specialty bags for aerial imaging drones and video camera bags, bags designed to accommodate a tripod, and more. Those are for another article, though. We’re trying to keep it simple here.

Buyer’s Guide to Find the Perfect Leather Camera Bag

As with any high-dollar purchase, it’s essential to know your stuff before you shop. Here are some things to look at when you’re choosing a quality and stylish camera bag.

Leather Lingo

If you’re choosing a leather bag (all of the bags on our list are real leather), knowing what you’re working with is key.

Full-Grain/Top-Grain Leather – Look for a bag with a “full-grain” or “top-grain” leather tag. It’s durable enough to withstand years of use and gets even more beautiful over time.

Genuine Leather – Genuine leather is often scrap leather layers glued together, so it may wear out faster. Although a soft genuine leather bag is a thing of beauty.

Hardware

Take a look at how the buckles and clasps are stitched into the leather. If the workmanship seems a little shoddy, best to pass.

Check the function of any zipper on the bag. Again, if they’re not sewn in evenly and securely, your bag will likely fail on you sooner rather than later in other parts, too. Also, opt for metal hardware. Plastic clasps, zippers, or buckles won’t last.

Straps

Easily adjustable straps are best, and you should try on your camera bag if possible before purchasing to ensure it’s a good fit for your posture and height. Padded straps are a lifesaver if you’ll be lugging your camera around all day.

Check how the straps are attached to the bag. Metal rivets reinforced with strong stitching will hold up to lots of weight better than stitching alone.

Features for Convenience

Most camera bags come equipped with extra pockets and pouches, so you don’t need to carry another bag for essentials like phones, wallets, and passports.

Of course, the most essential feature for a camera bag is a padded interior with a padded divider to protect your camera and lens(es). If you find one with movable partitions, even better.

The Perfect Gift

Confession: I’m not good at taking pictures. In fact, I’m rubbish.

Luckily, I happen to be married to someone who’s not only great at it but is a prolific photographer. Seriously, thank goodness he never misses a perfect moment; otherwise, I wouldn’t remember what my kids looked like when they were babies.

That’s parenting at its finest, folks.

Needless to say, after this list, I’ll be winning at Christmas this year. One could even say it’s in the bag. (Ahhh, puns.) Well done, you talented L&L shoppers. Thanks for makin’ me look super thoughtful.

Hopefully, we’ve given you some gift inspiration for your favorite photographer too! We’ll bask in the glow of how great we are on Christmas morning together.

9 Gay & Lesbian Wedding and Engagement Rings (Proudly in Love!)

We were so stoked when same-sex marriage was legalized in the U.S. Not just because it was so long overdue, but also because more weddings means more wedding ring shopping for us!

An article from us about wedding and engagement rings perfectly suited to same sex couples is long overdue. Stick around, because after we show you some gorgeous rings, we’ll bring up some things to consider when it comes to choosing a ring that’s perfect for you and your partner.

Many great designers specialize in creating the most beautiful rings for the LGBTQ+ community and this article features some of our faves. It wasn’t easy to choose and we really wanted to include them all,  but here are a few we love!

*Note: We’d be remiss not to mention that all of the jewelry makers whose rings we featured here are super philanthropic! Each contributes to making the world a better place by sourcing materials responsibly and giving back to the community in various ways.

We encourage you to visit each website to learn a little more about these extraordinary organizations. All we have to say is, hooray for the do-gooders out there trying to make the world a better place.

LGBTQ+ Wedding and Engagement Rings

No, it doesn’t have to be all about rainbow rings for your same sex wedding bands. Although we do have one rainbow sapphire in the list below! Ultimately, choose the wedding rings that you both love best!

1. Men’s Carved Branch – Gay Wedding Band

by Krikawa

Men's Carved Branch Wedding Band

This ring looks beautiful in any metal with any stone, and we love that it’s possible to adjust the width of this ring for even further customization and comfort. Elegant and understated with a dash of bling. Perfect.

2. Modern Scaffolding Engagement Ring

by Krikawa

Modern Scaffolding Engagement Ring

Scaffolding rings are so cool and will take you from your engagement all the way to your nuptials and beyond!

You can choose the wedding ring you’ll eventually add to the scaffolding to mix it up or to match. Switch up metals or add a plain band for an eternity ring, and you’ve got a unique combo, just like you and your true love. D’awwwww.

3. Amsterdam Comfort Wedding Band

by Equalli

Amsterdam Comfort Band

Show off your pride with this radiant rainbow ring! We think the shine of sterling silver showcases the rainbow sapphires so beautifully. It’s the perfect ring for someone happy to stand out loud and proud.

4. Triangle Wedding Ring With Diamonds In Cobalt

6. Triangle Waves Wedding Band

by My Halo Ring

7. Branchus Engagement Ring

by Equalli

Branchus Engagement Ring

Here’s another example of Equalli’s ability to create an asymmetric ring that’ll knock your socks off. The two-tone 14K white and yellow gold and sparkle of three delicate diamonds make this ring one-of-a-kind. Also, the diamonds remind us of a constellation—bonus points.

8. Diamond Side Mokume Engagement Ring

by Krikawa

Diamond Side Mokume Engagement Ring

Mokume Gane is said to have been first created three hundred(ish) years ago in Japan to adorn sword hilts. Cool, right?. It’s a process where non-ferrous metal sheets are stacked and then fused through pressure and heat.

The result is a gorgeous, laminated metal with unique wood-grained patterns. Different color combinations and different patterns display within each ring, making each piece unique.

We wanted to explain how the heck Krikawa got the amazing patterns in this Mokume wedding ring because it does stand apart. The row of baguette diamonds skimming the band creates a beautiful contrast and puts the spotlight perfectly on the center stone. Love it.

9. Mokume Diamond Infinity Wedding Band

by Krikawa

Mokume Diamond Infinity Wedding Band

The pear-shaped diamonds set in the infinity symbol are delightfully twinkly; you’ll rake in the compliments with this one! And the trademark Mokume swirl brings it all together.

This ring is customizable in so many ways. Choose your band metal, infinity symbol metal, Mokume type, and gemstone. The possibilities are endless!

Choosing A Wedding Ring That Fits Your Love Perfectly

Shopping for same sex wedding rings is exciting and fun, but there can be some stress involved as well. After all, this is it. This is the ring you’ll be wearing for the rest of your life, so you’d better get it right from the start, right?

No sweat! There are just a few questions to consider and some things to factor in when it comes to choosing your rings, and you’ll find the perfect ring.

What kind of lifestyle do you lead?

Are you and/or your partner active? Do you play sports or work with your hands? If so, you’ll want to look for a ring that is comfortable and sturdy enough to stand up to whatever you throw at it.

Are you an individualist and want to show off your style? In that case, there are many showstopping rings for turning heads that’ll reflect your uniqueness.

Regardless of your lifestyle, if you can’t seem to find that Goldilocks ring that’s just right, it’s worth looking into having your ring(s) custom-made. You can pick and choose the design of your ring to your preferences, and any of the jewelry artists we’ve included on our list will be more than happy to work with you!

Are you choosing your rings together?

If you are gifting the ring along with a “Will you marry me?” question, consider whether you’d like your rings to match. Again, there’s always the option of customization, but there are plenty of gorgeous paired sets available to fit you both.

Do you want to feature gemstones in your ring?

To bling or not to bling? That is the question. If so, does it need to be a diamond, or would another gemstone with special significance be better?

It’s a new dawn, people. The days of the diamond are diminishing. (Like the alliteration? Thanks.)

Although they’re certainly still beautiful, the days of the solitaire are numbered too. Gemstones can be incorporated so creatively into all kinds of settings, and it’s worth exploring some of the unique designs out there that feature gemstones.

Leaning toward the masculine?

It’s all about what reflects your style. Are you all about an argyle sweater vest and prefer to stay preppy? T-shirt and jeans? Are you always on top of the latest style trends? Somewhere in-between?

Whatever the case, the diverse selection of wedding and engagement rings designed for the LGBTQ+ community practically guarantees you can find a ring to complement you.

Even though they can be changed and tailored to fit your preferences, consider the fact that a lot of masculine bands are designed to be relatively boxy and wide. While fashionable, a flat-fit, wide band can be uncomfortable if you don’t have the long fingers for it.

They’re also not particularly optimal for stacking. Consider the fit if you’re wearing an engagement ring as well. Some people opt to wear an engagement ring and a wide wedding band on different hands or different fingers.

Want something decidedly feminine?

Surprise! Again, what you choose will have everything to do with your personal style. If you’re not a flashy person, a pretty-yet-simple band can glow just as beautifully as an eternity ring full of diamonds. Or you could have both, the world’s your oyster.

If you opt for a more traditional setting with a gemstone, keep in mind that it may require some maintenance. Most reputable jewelers offer cleaning and care for the life of your ring (which is forever, of course).

Congratulations!

Whether you’ve already proposed and you’re shopping for rings together, or you’re shopping to propose, we celebrate you!

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life.  So go forth and eat cake, drink something sparkly, dance, and share your love proudly!

It’s available in ivory, as well as emerald, black, and midnight to give you plenty of color options in case you just want to switch up your colors walking down the aisle a second time.

9. Pleated Dress

by Dillard’s

Pleated A-Line Midi Dress

The perfect vow renewal dress for the lady who prefers to remain low key, but who is anything but boring!

This pleated dress is so classy, images of Grace Kelly came immediately to mind when we saw it. Midi-length dresses are so flattering, and that pretty flare gives it just a little bit of flirty playfulness. Love the v-neckline and the cap sleeves too.

Enjoy the Ride

People choose to renew their vows for all kinds of reasons.

We know people who’ve wanted to recommit to each other after getting through a rough patch, and coming out on the other side stronger and more in love than ever.

We know some who got married in a rush the first time around, or were too stressed to enjoy it, and always wanted a “do-over” away from the pressure of a large wedding. Then there are some who just want to reiterate their love for each other.

Whatever your reasons, it’s an incredibly affirming thing to stand up before friends and family and declare that in good times and bad, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, you’d do it all over again. Together.

There’s something about a simple wedding invitation that’s especially pleasing to the eye. Minimalist, modern, and elegant, lots of brides and grooms opt for a simpler style to represent their pared-back wedding aesthetic and decor.

Now, don’t get me wrong, we’ve seen plenty of gorgeous wedding stationery that come with lots of bells and whistles. For example, we are and always will be wowed by laser cut wedding invitations.

But a crisp, clean, understated wedding invitation can be just as impactful. And to prove it, Here we’ve rounded up some simple wedding invitations that caught our eye here in L&L land.

We’ve also included some tips if you decide to create your own unique DIY invitations at home at the end of this post, so stick around for those too!

Simple & Modern Wedding Invites

1. Black and White Modern Wedding Invitation

by Zazzle

Modern Black and White Invitation

Framed black and white with a strategic font placement.

To us, that’s the epitome of simple and elegant. We like how they’ve bolded out the names on these invitations. It draws your eye to the significant deets first.

Dimensions: 5 x 7 inches

Printing: Standard (High Definition Available, too)

Card Type: Flat

2. Romantic Gold Calligraphy Wedding Invitation

by Zazzle

Romantic Gold Calligraphy Monogram Wedding Invitation

When you hear “gold calligraphy” you probably don’t immediately think of simple as a descriptor, and yet here we are!

We think the designer has done a  beautiful job of creating an outstanding balance of simple and embellished for these invitations. Block letters with a splash of calligraphy are a great combination.

Dimensions: 5 x 7 inches

Printing: Standard or High Definition

Card Type: Flat

3. Concertina Simple Wedding Invitation

by TavernCreative

Concertina Simple Wedding Invitation

Sending all your wedding info out at one time is definitely an excellent way to simplify your stationery situation. And make sure grandma (who doesn’t ‘do’ the internet), gets all the deets she needs in print.

This invite’s pretty calligraphy acts as a great header. It draws attention to the detailed sections on where to go, where to stay, and what to do. We really like the simple, no-fuss delivery here.

Dimensions: 6 x 4 inches when folded

Printing: Standard

Card Type: Tri-Fold

4. Always Petite Wedding Invite

by Minted

Always Petite Wedding Invitation

Ok, ok. Maybe these sort of border on being just a little fancy, but we still think they’re pretty straightforward. Not understated, perhaps. Just simple.

If you want to get a little crazier, there is an option to include photos or script on the back of the card. Or you can keep it easy-peasy with just the front text.

Dimensions: 4.25 x 6 inches

Printing: Standard

Card Type: Flat Card

5. Classic Monogram All-in-One Foil-Pressed Invitation

by Minted

Classic Monogram All-in-One Foil-Pressed Invitation

This design is another all-in-one option that we love for its ability to convey elegance without being ‘in your face’.

And let’s be real. Everyone likes shiny things. Ok, we may be overstepping our bounds in speaking for everyone on that point, but you get what we’re saying. We think the angular foil-pressed touches on this card are really striking.

These invites are a perfect example of how you can have simple but still add just a touch of glamour. If you’re not into the gold, there are other foil options available. If you’re not into foil at all, there are also plain options available in the same style.

Dimensions: 5.76 x 12.03 inches (Unfolded)

Printing: Foil-Pressed

Card Type: Tri-Fold

6. Minimalist Wedding Invitation Template

by LilacandWhite

Plain and Simple Elegant Wedding Invitation Template

This is such a dainty and elegant wedding invitation design. We thought it was so sweet without screaming “LOOK, YOU GUYS! WE’RE SO CUTE AND ROMANTIC!”

Sorry, we may have gotten carried away there with the caps lock to make a point. The point? Understated can be just as powerful (or more) than over-the-top. Just sayin’.

We don’t know if it’s the design, the card stock they use, or a bit of both, but they look expensive too.

Dimensions: 5.8 x 8.3 inches

Printing: Standard

Card Type: Flat

7. Half Arch Elegant Wedding Invitation

by PinkTeapotPress

Half Arch Wedding Invitation

This set by PinkTeapotPress is proof that you do not need to sacrifice a uniqueness for simplicity. The most eye-catching feature, of course, is the half-arch shape. It seems like such a small change to the usual, however, that slight deviation from the norm be just enough to make your invitations the talk of wedding season! I also can’t speak highly enough about the different color schemes on offer here. My favorite is Slate but Rosé is definitely a close second!

Printing: Standard

Card Type: Flat

8. Simple Mountain Wedding Invite

by augustandwhitedesign

Simple Mountain Wedding Invitation

We just adore theses handmade, minimalistic, mountain themed wedding invitations by Etsy seller augustandwhitedesign! The simple yet elegant type-face and the hand-drawn styled illustrations are reminiscent of the first edition story books you often find tucked away on the shelves of your favorite local book store and if that doesn’t bring you a cozy enough feeling, the soft cotton paper certainly will! These are perfect for an intimate outdoor ceremony, especially if you’re lucky enough to live in an area with mountainous views!

Printing: Standard

Card Type: Flat

9. Acrylic Custom Wedding Invitations with Wax Seal

by DreamDayPaperie

Acrylic Wedding Invitation with Wax Seal

If you are looking for something that is both minimalistic and jaw dropping, then this is definitely the pick for you! The acrylic material will not only be a surprise for your guests but it will leave them wondering how you managed to pay for such expensive invites! (They don’t need to know how affordable they actually are!) The thicker and more durable material just feels more high-class than more traditional materials and the sheen of the acrylic paired with the shimmering gold foil make them a true knock-out!

10. Ensemble Foil-Pressed Wedding Invite

by Minted

Ensemble Foil-Pressed Wedding Invite

There is something about this black wedding invitation that immediately captivated my attention when I came across it. Maybe it’s because the solid black finish invokes such a strong sense of elegance. Or maybe it’s the fact that it is in such stark contrast to the more widely used pastel color schemes. Either way, there is no doubt that these gold foil invitations will stand out on the kitchen fridge and will definitely get your guests in the mood for a classy affair!

Downloadable template invitations are hot.  If you’ve got the time and inclination, they’re a great option to exercise more freedom over your design and printing options. Here are some simple templates for DIY wedding invitations we liked:

14. Printable Wedding Invitation Template

by MatchmadeDesignsUK

Minimalist wedding invitation printable template

It doesn’t come much more straightforward than this! It tells your guests what they need to know with as little wording as possible. We love that. No need to write a six-stanza poem to communicate your details, right?

The design is so modern and you can personalize it as much as you’d like. Or not at all, if that’s your thing. Templates for the whole suite are available for download so you can match up all of your paper communications.

15. Elegant Wedding Invitation Template

by PearlyPaperDesign

Elegant Invitation Template

This is another example of a simple wedding invitation designed by someone who knows how to get it right. The flourish of calligraphy right smack in the center of the page grabs your attention but isn’t bossy.

Tips to Use Invitation Templates

It’s so easy to edit and print your own wedding invitations these days, and the editing platforms most designers use is pretty user-friendly. If you’re having a hard time, the seller will almost always offer support to help you get the most out of your DIY experience. If they don’t, it might be prudent to choose another invitation!

We published an article about home printing vs. online printing for any kind of stationery. It’s a really, really thorough guide that outlines everything you’ll need, how much it costs, and how to choose whether you want to DIY or recruit a professional printer. If you’ve decided that using a template design is for you, it’s the go-to place for the info.

For this article’s purpose, we’ll get a little more abbreviated and offer some tips and know-how to help you choose an editable invitation template.

Graphics aren’t editable

The graphics and artistic orientation of a template set the design apart from others. To be candid, it’s the only way the artist makes any money on selling their invitations.

That said, you do have the freedom to move, add and/or delete text, choose your font size and style, and customize your colors. You will also choose your card stock, decide where and how to print them, and so on. That’s a lot of freedom.

Also take note that some templates are only designed for one or two sizes. For an invitation, most of the time, it’ll be a standard 5 X 7 flat card, but some vendors will work with you if you’d like a different size. Some also give you the option of printing two cards per 8.5 X 11 sheet to save paper (and trees!).

They’re not meant for usage beyond your wedding invitation suite.

Most invitation templates are designed for use within one year. Your wedding invitation templates are intended for just that—wedding invites.

It isn’t legal (or nice) to use the templates for marketing or merchandising materials. That’s the same thing as copyright infringement. Just sayin’

Some templates are more accessible than others.

Depending on the shop, some templates can be edited on a desktop computer and mobile devices/laptops. This versatility is great if you don’t have an at-home computer or spend a lot of time commuting or hanging at coffee shops.

Most of the templates we found work on web-based platforms rather than applications, eliminating the need to download fonts or install software to work on your invites.

Try the free demo!

Many of the templates we found also offer a try-before-you-buy option so the vendor can show you the product in good faith before you commit. If the shop you’re browsing doesn’t provide that, it might be a good idea to keep on looking elsewhere.

Keepin’ it Simple

Whether you decide to DIY or let someone else, um, DI, a simple  wedding invitation will let everyone know you’re tying the knot with elegance and style. More importantly, it’ll let them know that you want them at the party!

We especially love the purposefully aged coloring of the paper as it’s the perfect touch to an already outstanding piece!

Saving the Date May Be Trickier Right Now, But Everything Will be Alright

COVID has made choosing a wedding date and sticking to it nearly impossible for couples over the last year. (Can you believe it’s been a year?)

But take heart. When the time is right, as long as there are wedding venues ready to re-open, airlines prepared to fly, and people are still falling in love, the show will go on. You can’t quarantine the institution of marriage forever.

When it’s safe for our friends and family to gather, be ready to send out save-the- date cards as the tip of the wedding planning iceberg. After that, it’s on like Donkey Kong. Good luck, and have fun!

Suppose you’re not having a destination wedding (thanks a lot, COVID). In that case, boarding pass invitation designs are still a fun, playful way to invite your loved ones to attend your nautical, tropical, or travel-themed wedding adventure.

What happened to the good old days when you have your boarding pass to the flight attendant so she could tear off the little ticket and give it back to you? Oh, right. Technology happened.

Call us nostalgic, but we couldn’t resist the retro “Pan-Am Airlines” colors and style of these boarding pass invites. However, you can select another color if you’d like. Maybe you want to get back to the ’70s with brown, burnt orange, and mustard yellow? Just be sure to request non-smoking.

This suite comes with a boarding pass invitation, matching mailing envelopes, and an RSVP.

4. Vintage Nautical Boarding Pass Invitation/RSVP

by Zazzle

Vintage Nautical Boarding Pass Invitation/RSVP

We can never get enough vintage wedding stationery. Or vintage anything, for that matter, but we’re talkin’ cards here. Anyway, we chose this one because its nautical theme reminds us of hopping a schooner in a corset and petticoats for a summer holiday in Europe.

Love the 1800’s aesthetic, and we thought the “accepts with pleasure” or “declines with regret” options on the RSVP were spot on. Bring on the handlebar mustaches!

Dimensions: 4 x 9.25 inches (portrait) or 9.25 x 4 inches (landscape)

Print: Standard

Pass to Paris Invitation Template

What’s more romantic than a wedding in Paris? Ok, maybe a honeymoon in Paris, but we’ll take either one! We liked the white/gold combination of this boarding pass invitation. Still, you can create them precisely to your wishes using the template.

You can edit text, font colors and add your own photos or images if you like. The graphics in the design aren’t changeable, but why would you want to anyway?

Happy Trails!

If you’re preparing for a destination wedding, congratulations! Regardless of the theme or venue, little details can make a your big day super unique. Of course, every wedding is special, we love them all, but you get what we’re saying.

Sending boarding pass invitations to your guests is a great example of a little touch that makes such a big difference. There’s something about them that says, “Get excited, people- we’re going someplace fantastic!” Or maybe it’s just us getting excited about the idea of traveling anywhere at this point. It’s hard to say.

At any rate, enjoy your day and safe travels!

Wedding Menu Card Etiquette FAQ

  • How many menu cards should I include per table? Should I print a menu for every guest or is using a few per table good enough?

This one depends on a couple of things. First, are you providing a menu with your RSVP? If so, it may only be necessary to have one or two per table. Also, how big are your tables? If there are a lot of people at each table, it may be best to give one to each guest.

We’ll be honest here: it also depends on how well your guests know each other and whether you think they’ll be comfortable passing it around.

It sounds silly, but sometimes it’s awkward for people if they have to use “pass the menu please” as an icebreaker. On the other hand, it could be the perfect icebreaker, it’s up to you to make that judgement call.  Of course, this is kind of a moot point if you’re doing it up a family-style feast, where sharing is going to be the name of the game.

  • Should I send my menu cards out with the RSVP cards?

That depends on whether you’re offering a pre-selected plated menu with multiple courses, or  a buffet-style menu where there’s probably something for everyone. Planning as far ahead as possible is undoubtedly helpful to your caterers, so that’s another thing to consider.

  • Should I use individual menu cards if we’re serving a buffet or family-style meal?

Sure! The primary benefit of using menu cards regardless of what kind of meal you’re serving is that it’ll keep everyone informed about what they’re going to eat and what’s in each dish. If your guest has a food allergy or dietary restrictions, this is really helpful.

Other than that, it’s nice for your guests to be able to peruse the menu items when they find their seats and settle in, so they have an idea of what’s available, especially for dessert (that’s always my priority, anyway). If your menus double as place cards, even better.

  • What kind of information should I include on my menu cards?

If you’re offering a sit-down, plated meal, include a list of the details of each course and in what order they’ll be served. For a buffet or family-style menu, list the options available and ingredient information on each dish that you’re offering.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry! Then Repeat

Everything about a wedding celebration is fun (some parts more than others). The food is one of the best parts! Everyone wants to feed their guests well, whether it’s a light reception or a multi-course sit-down meal.

Ask a pro, they’ll tell you the food is one area you can not scrimp on when it comes to your wedding. It only makes sense then to provide your guests with a menu showcasing what they have to look forward to!

Here’s our special recipe for a great wedding: a truckload of good food + an unlimited supply of good wine (more on that in another post) + dancing till you drop = a fabulous time for all. Bon appetit!
