The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Wine for Your Wedding

Some parts of wedding planning are fun, others not so much. In our opinion, choosing the best wine for your wedding fits firmly in the former category, and can be loads of fun! After all, in order to make the final decision you’re going to have to do some serious tasting, right?!

Bring. It. On.

That being said, choosing which wines to serve up at your big day can also be a bit challenging. You want to find vinos that will please everyone’s palette, including those few guests that fancy themselves wine aficionados.

If you’re like a lot of couples, you probably also want to avoid breaking the bank on your wine bill.

Lucky for you, we’ve got your backs on this one. The team at Love & Lavender is stacked with wine savvy staffers.

We’ve put together this handy guide to help you choose the best wine for your wedding, no matter what your budget. So relax, pour yourself a glass of your favorite vino, and keep reading! We even included a list of staff picks at the end.

Tips for Choosing Wine for Your Wedding

Before you make any final decisions about the wines you’re going to offer at your wedding, there are a few things to consider such as the venue, the season, or the reception meal and toasts to name a few. It is important not to overlook these nuances. Of course, figuring out your budget ahead of time will help everything else fall into place.

Here are some of the key items to take into account:

Wines to Go With the Season

People tend to prefer certain types of wine over others, depending on the season. For example, if your wedding is outdoors and during the summer, white wines and even rosé will be a big hit. Conversely, red wine is ideal for cooler months.

Whether they occur outside or inside, summer weddings can be hot, and wines on the lighter side are generally more refreshing than reds. Rosés and whites both help make the heat a little more tolerable, ahem, especially after the first three glasses  Depending on the weather during springtime, this can apply then as well.

For fall, winter and cool spring months, your guests are more likely to gravitate towards reds.

Now here’s the wrench in this rule – it’s not a hard and fast rule. Some people love their white wine no matter what the season, and some are always going to opt for red. That’s just people being people.

The key here is to use the season as a guide for the proportion of white vs red wines you buy.

Wines for the Wedding Reception

The best wine for your wedding reception is one that will satisfy most people. Yes, it’s as simple as that.

The meal is a large part of the reception, and you want your wines to complement the food. Some wine varieties tend to go better with certain meats than others. The traditional rule of thumb is whites with white meat and reds with red meat, but there are plenty of exceptions.

bottles of wine on a table

Ask your caterer for direction on dinner wines or visit the wine store and source out a sommelier that can help you out.

At the very least, you’ll want to have one red and one white regardless of the time of year. If possible, two of each is even better, especially if you offer up both dry and sweet varieties.  If you want to include rosé, you can include it as a red or white, or let it be a category of its own.

If you hit the nail on the head with your wine selection, you may just get Uncle Jim up on the dance floor to show off his break-dancing moves! Now THAT’s the sign of a wine selection gone right.

Wines for the Champagne Toast

One of the more significant events of your big day, other than the actual ceremony, is the wedding toasts that take place during the speeches. Champagne or sparkling wine is usually most suitable for toasting. Ideally, you want enough for each drinker to have at least half a glass per speaker.

If your crowd is more enthusiastic about champagne, you may want to get enough bottles for people to one or two small glasses per speaker.

It is always better to round up rather than down, as there are plenty of ways to use up leftover bottles. Plan to keep them for yourselves or give them away as gifts, and you won’t have to sweat about overbuying a bit.

How Much to Budget for Wine

It can be daunting to think about how much you will spend on wine for your wedding. Luckily, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Start with around 15% of the reception budget and be sure to consider less costly wines. Price is not always an indicator of quality, one way or the other!

One useful tool for giving you an idea of what to budget is a simple ‘how much wine for a wedding?’ calculator.

All you need to do is put in the number of wedding guests, how long the party will be, and the average number of glasses per hour your guests are likely to consume. You can always adjust the answer to better suit your wedding party, but the wedding alcohol calculator gives you a base to work with.

To help, Firstleaf has created this handy graphic:

wine for wedding calculator graphic

Another thing to consider when budgeting for wine is what other booze you’ll have on offer. If you’re planning to serve up buckets of beer and it’s an outdoor summer wedding, you might find guests gravitating more towards those APAs than the Pinot Grigio.

Tips to Save Money on Your Wedding Wine

No matter what your budget, we reckon you’re probably game for saving money on your wedding wine.

How you can save money on wine really depends on the restrictions (or lack of) in your jurisdiction and at your venue. For  example, if you’re hosting at a private space, you may be able to buy the wine yourself. On the other hand, if you’re having your wedding at a venue with in-house catering, it’s very likely you’ll have to purchase your wine through the caterer/venue.

Some venues will allow you to buy your own wine, but will charge a corkage fee that could be as much as $15. A good rule of thumb is that if the wine costs less than the corkage fee, it is worth going through your caterer.

Here are some more tips for saving money while buying wine for your wedding:

  • Buy by the case – this will usually get you an automatic 10% discount, which could go higher the more cases you purchase. Do this whenever possible.
  • Sign up for eNewsletters and mailing lists  – Both online stores and brick and mortar shops promote sales through their mailing lists. Take advantage of them and stock up to save even more money.
  • Buy larger wine bottles – Larger bottles of wine can take you a long way not only at the point of sale but also regarding the corkage fee.
  • Consider storing cases away before the wedding. Sometimes wine shops will allow you to keep your boxes with them if you do not have a cellar.

Best Wines to Please a Crowd

In our humble opinion, the best wine for a wedding is something drinkable and affordable. And you want to make sure you and your future spouse enjoy it, because if there are leftover bottles someone is going to have to drink ‘em up!

When it’s finally time to decide on a wine, several varieties are well known as all-around crowd-pleasers. Rosé is its own thing, but something on the drier side is ideal.

Best Types of White Wines

When it comes to white wine, something light and not too oaky is the way to go. These wines tend to be more refreshing but can still range from dry to sweet. The following are a few of the most popular white wines for weddings:

  • Chardonnay: Chardonnay is creamy, rich, and can have an intense flavor. Try to go with a lightly oaked variety or one that is unoaked altogether. It is drinkable on its own, but also pairs wonderfully with shellfish, veal, chicken, pork, white fish, and vegetables.
  • Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris: Both the Italian and French takes on this wine are light and firm with notes of melon, sweet-spicy, and pear. They pair well with pasta, fatty fish, chicken, and shellfish.

The Italian variety, Pinot Grigio, has good acidity with more of a steely flavor; Pinot Gris, on the other hand, has a richer aftertaste and more complex flavors.
  • Riesling: This aromatic, crisp type of white wine ranges from very sweet to very dry and works well with almost any type of food. Riesling often has a mild mineral flavor.
  • Sauvignon Blanc: Suitable for weddings all year round, Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with many foods such as oysters, cheese, vegetables, chicken, and seafood. Crisp and light, it has an earthy yet refreshing flavor.

Best Types of Red Wines

Sophisticated and classy, red wine is always popular for weddings. With a wide range of sweetness levels and flavors, it should be easy to find a variety that will suit your wedding. This list of the best red wine for your wedding does not include all your options, but it’s a good starting point:

  • Zinfandel: This bold red wine has a high alcohol content and intense flavors like black pepper or chocolate. Zinfandel goes beautifully with barbeque, red and grilled meats, and spicy foods.
  • Pinot Noir: With fewer tannins and a lighter body, Pinot Noir goes nicely with a good variety of foods.
  • Syrah/Shiraz: Shiraz is ideal for grilled or red meats, lamb, game, or pork. This red wine is fruity and earthy with dark fruits and flavors such as leather or tobacco.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: As one of America’s favorite wines, it’s almost impossible to go wrong with a Cabernet Sauvignon. It works best with heartier dishes, such as duck or red meat. Blackberries, plums, and black currants are typical highlights of this red wine.

Best Types of Bubbly Wines

Unless you plan to serve bubbly for the whole reception, you will need less of it than white and red. That does not mean, however, that you should give any less attention to which bubbly you choose. After all, this is the wine your wedding guests will be toasting to you with and you want them to keep smiling after their first sips!

  • Sparkling Rosé: Sometimes made from a white and red wine combination, sparkling rosé usually has a fuller body.
  • Prosecco: Dry but still sweeter than others, this Italian sparkling wine is aromatic and fruity, sometimes with notes of peach or flowers.
  • Blanc de Blanc: Derived from Chardonnay, Blanc de Blanc has a delicate and light flavor.
  • Cava: Balanced and fruity, this Spanish wine tends not to be as sweet as Prosecco.

When You’ve Got a Little Wiggle Room in the Budget

With the rise of the virtual wedding and micro wedding, more couples are opting to spend less on other stuff (like no venue at all) and spend more on some really, really good wines. (Read: expensive.)

Not that a wine has to be expensive to be good, but let’s face it, what do we bust out on special occasions? The expensive stuff, of course. Disclaimer: expensive to us may not be at all expensive for you. If that’s the case, congratulations.

We’ve already listed some wines to present when on a budget, but now we want to dream a little. If we could pick some higher-end wines for our wedding, say, between $50 and $100 per bottle, what would they be? (Cue wavy lines and fade to wedding fantasy.)

BUBBLY

Ruinart, Blanc de Blancs, NV– Some may say this one may be more suitable for the wedding toast or as an aperitif than paired with the rest of the meal. I get that, because it’s so fresh and delicately fruity, to really appreciate the floral aromas that come with it, it’s probably best sipped on its own for a while.

That said, if there’s enough to go around, you may skip the meal altogether just to drink this champagne from one of the oldest (like 1720 old) and beloved Champagne houses in France. Who needs to eat anyway, right?

WHITE

2017 Sterling Vineyards Reserve Napa Valley Chardonnay– All things Sterling are good to me, but if we’re looking at semi-fancy-pants white wines, this chard is the best. Vanilla and pineapple aromas complement a creamy mouthful of pear, apple, and a touch of oaky spice.

As a “reserve” wine, this chard can stand up to some pretty rich dishes. Try it with fish or steak with a nice bearnaise, dishes featuring butternut squash or pumpkin, all things buttery scallops, and cheddar cheeses. My favorite? You may call me a goose-abuser, but I’m a fan of foie gras with a full-bodied Chardonnay like this.

RED

Stags’ Leap 2018 Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon- Ohhhh this wine is luscious, it’s like a party in your mouth. Dark berries and cedar aromas. Dark chocolate, plum, and dried fruit on the palate. Velvety and rich all at once.

Stags’ Leap 2018 Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon

It pairs beautifully with hard cheeses, smoky meats, and earthy mushrooms. Oh, and if you’ve opted for a small backyard barbeque wedding because you’d rather drop some green on good wine instead of a huge catering extravaganza, you better believe it elevates a burger like nobody’s business. Close your eyes and imagine it- we’ll give you a mo.

Love & Lavender Staff Picks

There are two things we adore here at Love & Lavender:

  1. Wine
  2. Weddings
  3. (okay, babies make the list too!)

Take the first two above and we’re over here swooning at the possibilities. So, in the interests of science, we just had to share our top picks for wedding wines.

After a great deal of arduous tasting by our staff, here are the bottles that won us over:

BUBBLES

Yellow Tail Bubbles – “Don’t be deterred by the label! Yellow Tail may not have the best reputation when it comes to whites and reds, but their bubbly is quite lovely. Offering up soft floral notes and a light, fruity finish, I think it would be perfect for a summer evening wedding.  I first discovered it thanks to my wine connoisseur friend, who had been told that it’s very, very similar to Veuve Clicquot. As a big fan of Veuve, she didn’t believe it for a second. Well, her husband set up a blind taste test. She was certain after tasting them both that she knew which was the Veuve … she was wrong!” -Shannon

Segura Viudas Brut Cava – “Awesome on its own or mixed (it makes a mean French 75, so if you’re planning on doing a cocktail bar, this is a good go-to). It’s quite dry, with the acidic notes of pineapple and citrus, but has tropical fruit and floral aromas. so it’s really well balanced and easy to sip.” – Laura

Freixenet Italian Rose DOC – “This Spanish bubbly is the epitome of ‘pretty in pink’ and would be perfect for the first toast to the new couple! Besides the stunning bottle and pretty colours, this Charmat method glera/pinot noir blend is also delightfully delicious. It offers up light and sparkling notes of red berries and subtle hints of crisp apples.  Refreshing in every way possible.” – Mary

WHITES

2018 Bogle Chardonnay – “I can drink this wine with anything. It probably plays well with others because it’s an almost half and half oaked/un-oaked combo. In other words, half of the grapes were aged in stainless steel tanks and the other half in oaked barrels. The result is a full-bodied wine with really great, velvety texture. If you have guests who prefer white regardless of season or menu, this is your guy.” – Laura

Matua Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc – “This one’s perfect for a beach wedding! An all-round crowd-pleaser, it delivers fresh notes of citrus and tropical fruits complemented by grassy and mineral tones.  I like to pretend I’m sitting on a beach in New Zealand (where the wine is from!) when I sip a glass.” – Meredith

Bella Sera Pinot Grigio –  “Not all Pinot Grigios are created equal and in my humble opinion this Bella Sera is one of the best at its price point and a real crowd-pleaser.  Italian in origin, this crisp white offers up notes of pear and apple, and would pair great with cheeses and appetizers. Definitely has a ‘summer wedding’ vibe to it!” – Andrew

wedding-reception-refreshment-wine-kegs

REDS

Mont Gras Carmenere Reserva – “This red is bold and smooth. A less familiar grape, but a crowd-pleaser that will have your guests feeling spoiled. Great paired with rich meat dishes and the perfect elixir for getting folks on the dance floor!” – Mary

2016 A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir – “Vibrant but not too tannic, it’s got lovely red berry aromas and a subtle cherry/spicy slow finish. This one stands up to pretty much anything you order off the menu. If I had to give my opinion of what it pairs best with I’d say cheese. But I think, like with all wines, it goes best with the foods that represent its region. It’s amazing paired with salmon, mushrooms, and game meats, but you can serve it with anything and everything and people will love it!” – Andrew

Errazuriz Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon – “Oh how I love it when my glass of wine features flavours of chocolate and a slight smokiness. It’s pure bliss in a bottle, that’s what this cab sav is. Dry and medium to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a long finish, this wine pairs especially well with beef dishes or heavier poultry meals. It also, obviously, goes well with rich, chocolate desserts!” – Shannon

And, last but not least, we felt it pertinent to include the response we received from one of our teammates, Heather, when we asked for her wine selections:

“I have nothing to contribute, really.  A palate doesn’t get more unsophisticated than mine.  I’ll typically drink whatever the cheapest red on the menu is and think it’s delicious as long as it’s not too wine-y.

I don’t know the difference between Pinot and Merlot and don’t care, and buy wine exclusively based on how cool the label is. I’m really your ideal wedding guest because I won’t wince if you put crap wine on the table!”

— Heather

It’s useful and probably something the new parents haven’t thought to buy themselves, making it a great gift!

Enjoy The Process

Shopping for baby gifts is an event. Take time to appreciate every cute little detail because we both know that fun and whimsical stuff disappears as we get older.

And it’s too bad, really. Wouldn’t you love to have a sleepytime book written just for you? Or a super fluffy bunny with your name on it to snuggle when you feel crummy? Come to think of it, I don’t suppose there’s any reason we can’t, right?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a woodland animal mobile to order.

Eat, Drink, and Get Married

We think bachelor/ette parties are essential. Really, everyone could use that extra time to get together with friends, reminisce about old times, and get ready to be hitched to one person for the rest of your life.

Depending upon who you ask, that may be the best thing or the worst. We suspect those who think it’s a bad idea are just jealous, but we have no evidence to support that claim.

Of course, here at Love & Lavender, we’re all about the matrimony, BUT we’re also all about the partying. So heck yeah, grab those friends who you know have your back (or would help you hide a body if it got really bad) and live it up!

12 Beautiful Collegiate Settings To Host a Wedding on Campus

Why would someone want to get married on a college campus? I mean, there are so many other places that specialize in producing fairytale weddings…

Let me tell you a story.

Once upon a time, there was a brilliant girl sitting in Western Civ during her freshman year of college.

She was taking immaculate notes and absolutely getting straight A’s when a young man sitting behind her asked to borrow a pencil. The two insanely attractive students struck up a conversation.

They became fast friends. After many years of adventures, parties, broken hearts, and marathon study sessions, they realized they should’ve just married each other to begin with.

And so they did. A litter of children, a mortgage, and many pets later, they’re living happily in the suburbs. The rest is history. (Get it? Western Civ? History? I’m sure you get it…)

True story. Mostly. As I like to remember it, anyway.

He later confided he had been sitting behind me all year trying to get my attention. Still, I was oblivious, as all of my attention was focused on why the Middle Ages were the worst.

Our story isn’t really that unique. Like many young people, we grew into adulthood in college. Our experiences there (both together and on our own), shaped a big part of who we are today.

Maybe your ‘sitch is nothing like mine. Perhaps you didn’t go to college and met your partner-in-crime in line at the grocery store. Or on a jungle safari.

Regardless of where you met, there are a ton of good reasons to get hitched on a college campus.

In this article, we’ll look at why getting married on a college campus is a great idea. Oh, and, the crew at L&L got together and sniffed out some gorgeous campus settings all over the U.S. to share with you. Hopefully, they’ll give you some inspiration for throwing your own storybook wedding.

Chapter 1: Why Get Married on a College Campus?

Like I said, getting married at a college campus may or may not have anything to do with how you met, but there are a few other reasons why it might just be the right venue for you:

It Can Be Very Convenient (Particularly During School Breaks)

Depending upon the location and timing, holding your wedding on a college campus can be pretty convenient. Parking and lodging arrangements for guests may be easier to manage at a university-based venue. Also, many college campuses are at the center of bustling areas where restaurants and shopping are within walking distance.

It Can Also Be Very Budget-Friendly

Getting married at a university can be MUCH more affordable than traditional venues.

Now isn’t the most lucrative time for private universities. Many are looking for creative ways to generate some revenue with minimal spending. Capitalizing on the assets of a picturesque campus setting is an excellent way to do that.

This translates to providing a fantastic yet affordable location for hosting your wedding. Win/Win.

***Disclaimer*** Some of the venues featured here aren’t the most budget-friendly available, but we want you to see them. They’ll help get those inspirational juices flowing. Also, they’re amazing.

You Love Learning

Right? Of course you do. This is a good thing because getting married at a university provides plenty of educational enrichment opportunities.

Many universities are rich in history and culture. Some feature fascinating museums and house expansive libraries, making the wedding experience way more interesting for your guests and for you.

Many Have Beautiful Indoor and Outdoor Spaces!

Many universities feature manicured green spaces, architecturally impressive buildings, grand banquet halls, and ornate chapels. This provides you with a one-stop-shop for the ceremony, reception, photoshoots, and more.

Remember that scheduling a wedding at any venue is a little iffy right now, so some of these event spaces may not be ready to re-open quite yet. But don’t worry, they can’t stay closed forever.

Also, remember those schools we mentioned that host weddings we may or may not be able to afford? Check out these seven absolutely stunning college venues:

Pssst…a little further along in this article (Chapter 4,) we’ll show you some that are more budget-friendly.

Architecture, architecture, architecture

Try sayin’ that three times fast.

Some of the oldest structures in the U.S. are college campuses, and the architecture alone provides a majestic backdrop for a wedding:

  1. Harvard University Annenberg Memorial Hall
harvard memorial annenberg hall

With its rich walnut paneling, stenciled ceiling, and graceful trusses, Harvard University’s Annenberg Hall is a stunning space for an indoor wedding. Dedicated in 1874, Harvard Divinity students used the space for their early morning workouts in wintertime.

In 1996, after a ton of renovations, it became the first-year student’s dining hall and was renamed as Annenberg.

Leave it to Harvard to feed their freshmen in a hall that looks just like Hogwart’s. In fact, there’s a possibility that the historical portraits housed there may talk to your guests. Which is a pretty cool touch if you ask us.

  1. Prospect House at Princeton University

If you’re looking for a flexible indoor/outdoor university venue, but still want that old-school (aa! get it?) atmosphere of history and culture, the Prospect House and gardens at Princeton are just gorgeous.

The gardens on the grounds are incredibly dreamy. Mrs. Woodrow Wilson herself planted the rear flower garden in the shape of the University’s seal. She also supervised much of the planting of the diverse array of trees on the grounds.

Church Weddings

If you’d like to hold a formal ceremony in a church, many universities house gorgeous places of worship as well. In fact, some of the most architecturally-striking churches and chapels in the world are affiliated with U.S. universities.

  1. St. Francis Xavier College Church at Saint Louis University
St Louis cityscape

Built in 1836, Saint Louis University’s College Church is unbelievably majestic. Its gothic revival- style architecture and vivid stained glass windows are enough to take your breath away. It’s open for public weddings, but only to those couples baptized as Roman Catholic.

  1. Rockefeller Chapel at The University of Chicago
rockefeller chapel university of chicago

Made entirely of stone and adorned with over 100 sculptures, this chapel’s gothic architectural beauty is overwhelming from the exterior alone. When you get inside, it’ll knock your socks off. An organ case featuring oak carvings, vaulted ceilings, art-deco style glazed tile mosaics, and pastel-stained glass windows make it a sight to behold.

The Chapel invites the University’s alumni, students, and full-time staff of any denomination or faith to use its facilities for wedding ceremonies.

Original Venues

Many universities house other indoor/outdoor spaces that are perfect for hosting a wedding. Some of the libraries, museums, theaters, and common areas found at universities all over the U.S. provide a unique and beautiful atmosphere to say your vows.

  1. University of California, Los Angeles
UCLA campus building

Of course UCLA has gorgeous outdoor options for hosting a wedding! The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, Janss Terrace, and Wilson Plaza are a few worth investigating.

  1. University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

Whoever decided that the Penn Museum would make a good spot to throw a wedding deserves a medal. With multiple indoor and outdoor spaces to choose from, you can integrate your wedding seamlessly with some of the museum’s exhibits. How cool is that??

  1. George Peabody Library at Johns Hopkins University
george peabody library johns hopkins university

Wow. Pretty much speechless on this one. The main library is the most magical spot for a ceremony and reception. The Exhibition Room provides an ideal place for pre-wedding cocktail hour for your guests to peruse the rare books and curated artifacts on display from the library’s private collection. You really have to see it to believe it.

Chapter 2: Tips to Plan A College Campus Wedding

Now that you’re convinced that a college campus wedding is fairytale-worthy and checks all the boxes as the perfect venue for you and your beau, here are some things to think about when planning your big day:

Scheduling is everything

Obviously, getting married at a college means working around their schedule. It’s a school first, right? So book a time during breaks, and be sure to plan around academic and sporting events. If you time it right, you may even get some extra accommodation in the form of housing and parking options.

Secure your date WELL ahead of time

A year would be nice, but if you’re in a hurry, 9 months minimum. Communicate with the staff designated to schedule weddings and events to confirm that your university will still be hosting weddings when the date rolls around. Some schools aren’t as consistent as others when it comes to planning.

Confirm rules and restrictions that may be applicable

If you’d like to have your reception at the university, but it’s a dry campus, that could pose some problems if you’re planning on having an open bar. Or any bar. Similarly, many campuses are predominantly non-smoking. If your Aunt Marge is a serious smoker, she’ll need to know where she can and can’t light up.

There may also be rules around what you will and won’t have access to in terms of extra space. Make sure you have adequate areas for things like dressing and makeup/hair as well as a private room for the wedding party to prepare.

Take your vendors into consideration too. Your caterers (if not arranged through the university) will need adequate space to set up and take down your tables, seating, staging, etc.

Tell the story

If holding your wedding at a university venue has personal significance, share that with your guests and they’ll feel like they’re part of your story too. You can do this on your invites, during wedding party speeches, during the ceremony, whatever is appropriate.

When sending out info about logistics, highlight some cool things your guests may be interested in seeing or doing on campus. If there’s a fantastic spot for grabbing a cup of coffee and people watching or a Sunday brunch mecca you used to frequent, let them know.

Involve your vendors

Sometimes throwing a wedding in a non-conventional setting means a little extra communication with the people helping you make it happen. And a good vendor will be happy to work with you.

While most vendors are used to traditional wedding venues, they’ve probably got a few tricks up their sleeve when working around places that aren’t pre-fabricated for weddings. Brief them on what you have and don’t have available so they know what they’re dealing with.

Chapter 3: Incorporate Your Alma Mater

Suppose you can’t book a gig on campus but would like to give a nod to your alma mater. In that case, here are some other ways you can pay homage in a beautiful and tasteful way at whatever venue you choose.

Color Schemes

Including your college’s colors in the decor palette for your wedding is an excellent way to show your school spirit. If they aren’t conventional wedding colors, even better. It could add a really cool and unique aesthetic to your floral and table settings.

Mascot Wedding Cake

The same applies to your cake. A good cake designer can incorporate pretty much anything into a wedding cake, while still keeping it stylish and ‘wedding-y’.

Paying homage to your school’s mascot will probably draw lots of smiles from your guests with no cartoons necessary. Unless that’s what you want. In which case, we want pictures.

Inspired Music

Most universities have an anthem or fight song. It’s amazing what a live band or a string quartet can do when it comes to covering a request, so throw it in there!

Memory Board

If you and your sweetheart met at school or it plays a role in your love story in other ways, include that narrative on your memory board and display it proudly.

Engagement Shoot

Head to campus for an engagement photoshoot! Go where you first met, or a tree in the courtyard you used to study under together and revisit some of those memories.

Rehearsal Dinner

Have your rehearsal dinner or day-after brunch at a special spot on campus. It’s a fun place to recount your experiences there and why they’re meaningful to you both.

Chapter 4: Affordable College Campuses for Your Wedding

***Disclaimer: The rates and inclusions we’ve quoted here are subject to change. Check with the venue for the most updated prices and offerings.***

Northeastern U.S.

  1. Boston University Castle

Want to get married in a castle in the middle of a metropolis? This Tudor Revival-style mansion overlooking the Charles River is the place to go. It features crystal chandeliers, mahogany paneling, a massive fireplace, and beamed ceilings.

The rental fee of $3,500 is for 5 hours of ceremony and reception time, but you can purchase extra time if you’d like. They do have some rules, though. Catering and beverage (including alcohol) must be handled by the venue, which may or may not be a good thing depending on how picky you want to get.

Packages start at $9,844 for 50 guests but include so much stuff, it’s bananas. Valet parking, day-of coordinator, coat check, dressing areas, dance floor – the list goes on and on. Check out their website for more information. Compared to more traditional venues, what you get for the money is well worth it.

Southeastern U.S.

  1. University of Virginia Alumni Association

The UV Alumni Building is the whole package if you want beauty, convenience, and southern style.  Host your ceremony on the sweeping terrace overlooking the university grounds. Move into the grand Jefferson Ballroom, with its arched windows and shining hardwood floors, for the reception. Use the annex and photo gallery for an elegant cocktail reception or cake, favor, and gift tables.

Ceremony and reception rental packages start at $5,511 for 50 guests for up to 6 hours of the evening and 4 hours of daytime events. Ceremony-only rental rates range from $920 to $3,910.

Again, tons of amenities and a few very reasonable restrictions accompany these rates, so you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this space.

Northwestern U.S.

  1. University of Washington Botanic Gardens
university of washington campus from above

The botanic gardens at the University of Washington include two equally gorgeous venues – the Center for Urban Horticulture and Wisteria Hall.

We looked into the Center for Urban Horticulture because it provides the flexibility of having an indoor wedding or setting up the dining area outside under a stunning canopy of trees. Also, it was featured in Martha Stewart Real Weddings, so you know it’s going to be amazing.

The venue accommodates approximately 200 guests. You can rent the space for up to nine hours, including setup and clean up. Head on over to the website for more information on pricing and details on amenities offered in their packages.

Southwestern U.S.

  1. The Immaculata Chapel At The University of San Diego
The Immaculata Chapel At The University of San Diego

This place is dazzling, and it’s absolutely enormous. White marble is used for the pillars and floors, as well as the main altar. The front door is solid bronze, and 50-foot barrel-vaulted ceilings create a dramatic atmosphere. The fountain in front of the church is also an excellent place for photos.

For a very reasonable $1,200 fee, you can use the chapel regardless of affiliation as long as one of the happy couple is of the Roman Catholic faith.

Fees don’t include services other than the wedding coordinator who leads the rehearsal and is present for assistance on the wedding day. You’ll have to book a reception elsewhere (we’ve heard there are plenty of lovely venues close by to host an exceptional par-tay).

Midwestern U.S.

  1. Alice Millar Chapel At Northwestern University
northwestern university

The stained glass windows in this place are beautiful enough to make you cry, and the gothic exterior is the perfect place for fantastic photo-ops. Non-denominational, interfaith ceremonies are welcome and non-university affiliates can also rent the space.

Alice Millar Chapel fees range from $1,800 to $2,300, including an event manager available for scheduling the ceremony and rehearsal, a day-of-chapel coordinator, a musician, and a custodian before and after the ceremony.

Fees include 2 small preparation spaces for dressing and hair/makeup 30 minutes before the beginning of the ceremony. Parking is available as well.

This venue is intended for the ceremony only. The reception should be arranged elsewhere.

Epilogue

It’s been a really long time since that Western Civ class. And reflecting on it now, I think getting married at our college campus would’ve been quite romantic.

In fact, we’ve been thinking about renewing our vows for a while. Maybe it’s fitting we go back to the place where our own story began.

11 Stylish Leather Messenger Bags for Men [2024 Guide]

Goal: Acquire a timeless leather bag that is stylish, quality, and extremely functional.

That’s the leather messenger bag in a nutshell. Seriously, think about it. When you picture a Roman courier needing to carry something from one place to another in a hurry, it’s in a leather messenger bag, right? Or maybe even a messenger boy from the Revolutionary War?

Anyway, you get the picture.

In this article we serve up tips on how to determine the quality of a messenger bag, as well as our top bag picks. Women buying for their boyfriends and husbands often have to decide between black or brown, matte or shiny, and so forth. Sometimes the quality can be so similar it’s virtually impossible to choose.

There are a few ways to spot what bag is best to buy for your money. Let us help you determine good quality with our list of handpicked best leather messenger bag picks.

Anatomy Of Leather Messenger Bags

As with any high-dollar purchase, it’s important to know your stuff before you shop online or at a brick and mortar store. Here are some things to look at when you’re choosing a bag:

Know Your Leather

Understanding the different types of leather is the most important thing to understand when choosing a messenger bag. Well, that is if you want a bag made from leather, of course!

If that’s the case, study up on your leather know-how stat. Here are the main terms you’ll come across:

  • Full-Grain – You’re looking for a leather strong enough to take a beating and last. To get that, you’ll need to look for full-grain, cowhide leather. It’s the thickest of the types of leather, and not only does it last forever, it also gets more beautiful over time.
  • Top-Grain – Top-grain leather isn’t too shabby either. It’s not as durable as full-grain, but it’ll still stand the test of time and stay beautiful.
  • Genuine Leather – Just say no to those bags with the ubiquitous “genuine leather” tag. They’re leather, sure, but it’s basically a bunch of scrap leather glued together. There are plenty of lovely pieces made of genuine leather. However, if you’re in the market for a really rugged leather messenger bag, you won’t find it with this leather.
  • Suede and Nubuck – Some other kinds of cowhide from which to choose are nubuck and suede. They’re beautiful but won’t endure rough weather and a lot of use as well. Best leave those for your sofa or blue shoes. Get it? Blue suede shoes – couldn’t help it!

There are plenty of varieties of leather besides cowhide to consider as well:

  • Lambskin – Lambskin is pretty and very soft, but not as durable as cowhide. Really lovely for wallets and gloves, though.
  • Exotic Hides – If you want to dabble in hides like crocodile, ostrich, or snakeskin, you’re a madman. While we admire your moxie, we’re not talking about bags made of exotic hides in this article.
  • Faux Leather – If you don’t love the idea of wearing an animal on your shoulder, there are plenty of faux leather variations from which to choose. Some are pretty tough, some not so much.

Hardware

All of those buckles, zippers, and clasps can make or break how easy it is to use your bag. Consider how many features the bag has.

Do you mind if it has multiple enclosures with snaps, buckles, and zippers?

You’ll also want to take a good look at how the hardware is stitched into the leather. If the workmanship seems subpar, you might consider moving on. Also, metal is always the best option. Plastic zippers and other closure methods don’t last as long.

mens leather messenger bag

Straps

Try on your bag if possible before purchasing to make sure the straps are easy to adjust.

Is the bag a good fit for your posture and height?

It’s also important to note how they are fastened to the bag. Many people say metal rivets are the only way to go, and hand-stitching just won’t hold up to lots of weight.

Consider padded straps, especially if you’ve got a lot of heavy stuff to lug or a long commute home that involves standing or walking. If you’re in and out of airport terminals a lot, the comfort comes in handy.

If your bag has top handles and a removable shoulder strap, congrats, you’ve got yourself a briefcase. Sometimes carrying a bag by its top handles seems a little less casual and can be a good option for more formal occasions – top secret spy meetings, job interviews, and the such.

Bells And Whistles

Once you’ve got a handle on the exterior features, it’s time to look at the inside. This is where it gets really personal. Here are some features you may need from your messenger bag:

  • Laptop Enclosure – A built-in padded laptop sleeve is a must-have. Even if you’re not planning on carrying around your laptop, you’ll probably have a tablet or another electronic device to protect.
  • Lining – A durable, protective lining is essential if you’re planning on keeping your bag for a long time. Canvas seems to be the best option for standing up to potential spills or other disasters that can happen inside your bag. It’s also sturdy enough not to tear easily.

Some bags also feature an RFID-protective lining to protect your passport and credit cards from skimming. Maybe not a bad idea if you’re on public transportation or work from public spaces a lot.
  • Special Pockets For Your Stuff – It’s always exciting to get a new bag and discover that the cell phone pockets and business card slots are a perfect fit!

Test out all those bells and whistles in your bag. As long as they make your life easier and more organized, we’re all about it!

We think the pretty dried bouquet on these invitations are especially fabulous because they make for such a versatile design! Dried flower bouquets and florals work with so many styles, but vintage, boho, and rustic are the first to come to mind.

At any rate, we think lace should be involved. And white pumpkins. And a brass service cart with fancy cognac. Just sayin’.

Fall Mountain Wedding Invitations

We posted an article not too long ago about mountain wedding invitations, and the idea of a fall wedding up in the mountains seems especially dreamy to us.

We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: mother nature is the best designer ever.

If you say your vows in the mountains surrounded by the colors of autumn, the photo ops are prime. Besides, something about mountain air seems to make everyone happier. Your guests are gonna love it.

Bohemian Wildgrass Fall Wedding Invite

Ditching the more traditional roses or daisies for the romantic whimsies of pampas and wild grass, these invitations are the perfect mix of bohemian chic and feminine grandeur. That being said, it’s the smaller, more intricate details that really steal the show! The unique additions of a golden wax seal and beautifully decorated inner envelope will have your guests actively excited to open their mail and will set the perfect stage for your big day!

Autumn Storm Wedding Invite

Your guests are going to love having this autumnal inspired piece hanging on their fridge! The wheat and wildflower wreath is a breath of fresh air when compared to the highly feminine floral patterns that are so common for wedding invitations, and the deep toned navy blue color theme is especially pleasing to the eye.

Harvest Floral Wedding Invitation

Putting a modern twist on a very traditional floral pattern, this design by Minted seller Leah Bisch, is perfect for the couple who want a classic affair with just a hint of trendy aesthetic. We especially love the way it looks like the flowers are popping right off of the page and how the colors remain vibrant without being too brash!

Formal Moody Romantic Wedding Invitation

The picture of sophistication, these merlot colored beauties don’t need a ton of loud patterns or intricate details to be impressive – they will take your breath away without even trying! We love that the perfectly coordinated Details and RSVP cards tell a story without being too matchy-matchy and the rose gold foil press give it just the right amount of sparkle for a fall or winter wedding!

Cheap Fall Wedding Invitations

Before we go any further, let’s be clear: when we’re talking about cheap invites, we don’t mean shoddy quality, we mean they can save you some dough!

Many brides-to-be are opting to download printable templates for their wedding stationery over ordering pre-printed paper invitations. There are plenty of benefits to this approach including more control over your choice of paper, fonts, design, all that stuff.

You also have the freedom to decide how much or how little you need in terms of accessories. If you want a flat card invitation and RSVP, you got it.

If you’re going to get a little fancier and print the whole kit and caboodle, including place cards, menus, and programs, you can do that too.

Perhaps, one of the best benefits is that using a printable template often means saving money without scrimping on quality, and we’re allllll about saving money. In case you hadn’t heard, weddings are expensive. True story.

Here are a couple of great templates to demonstrate just how beautiful DIY (well, almost DIY) wedding invitations can be:

13. Sienna Rustic Fall Wedding Invitation

by DIYPaperBoutique

Sienna Rustic Fall Wedding Invitation

Maybe it’s just us, but something about the color and design of these invites sems very fall wedding circa 1940s vintage chic.

We couldn’t help but envision pillbox hats and dainty white gloves. The bride would wear a simple lace dress with an ivory fur wrap (faux fur, of course) and a bouquet featuring chrysanthemums in autumn colors.

14. Rustic Fall Wedding Invitations

by AWildBloomPrintables

Rustic Fall Wedding Invitations

Fall colors take on a subtly different feel when painted with watercolors. We think these rustic fall invitations are a great example of how beautifully they go together!

They conjure images of a colossal barn wedding with rustic distressed wood accents, dried florals, and cedar branch tealights at the place settings. The bride would be wearing cowgirl boots, of course.

These earthy invitations by highly rated Etsy seller SincerelyByNicole stand out from the crowd – but not because they’re loudly screaming for attention! These unassuming and simplistic designs draw your eye with their minimalistic but beautifully deep tones. These are the perfect choice if you want to set a romantic and calming tone before all of those exciting but often stressful wedding events!

James Allen vs Blue Nile – A Comparison of Two Esteemed Jewellery Brands

For most of us, shopping for fine jewelry can be a time-consuming task. After all, you’re going to be shelling out big bucks and want to make sure you get the perfect piece. If you’re shopping for something particularly special, like an engagement ring, you’ve probably spent lots of hours online and perusing shops looking for just the right one.

There’s a good chance that during your search you came across the Blue Nile and James Allen brands. These two are considered behemoths of the online jewelry world and both boast that they provide high-quality jewelry and excellent customer service.

We were curious about how the two stack up to each other, so we did a little comparison shopping of James Allen vs Blue Nile. Keep reading for our take on these two jewelry titans.

James Allen vs Blue Nile

Clash of the jewelry titans.

Probably the first things you’ll notice when you go to each company’s website is how easy they are to navigate and how they showcase their products.

Both have pop-ups galore, but who doesn’t these days? Probably noworth mentioning, but it is what it is. Both seem to have pretty intuitive, navigable sites, but in our humble opinion, James Allen’s site is a bit cluttered. That’s a pretty subjective thing to measure, though, so check the sites out yourself.

We are pretty confident when we say the most apparent at first blush is how they each showcase their jewelry products. Both offer 360-degree views, but James Allen offers HD images, which are much clearer. That can make a huge difference, particularly when it comes to choosing a diamond.

Let’s takes  closer look at each company, shall we?

The Skinny on Blue Nile

What We Like

There are plenty of things to like about Blue Nile, but here are the key features we swooned over:

Blue Nile homepage image

Price/Pricing Options

Let’s get right to the nitty gritty: are they cheaper without being cheap?

Blue Nile offers up more reasonable prices (on average) than pretty much any other reputable online retailer, including James Allen. And they even take it a step further by offering a price match guarantee.

Blue Nile is also a large and established brand, which some have reported as an advantage when it comes to credit options if you’d like to purchase your ring with a line of credit.

Product Quality and Selection of Alternative Gemstone Jewlery

Their inventory is a bit behind James Allen when it comes to loose diamonds and their settings selection. They do, however, offer more non-diamond and colored gemstone jewelry.

As far as quality goes, they get fantastic reviews from those in the know, so we’re comfortable saying you won’t be receiving anything sub-par from them.

Heirloom Halo Micropavé Diamond Engagement Ring

Customer Service

What’s the deal with their customer service, you ask? They have a 24-hour customer service staff available to answer your questions and handle issues you may run into. All purchases are also backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

They offer a lifetime warranty on manufacturer defects and complimentary cleaning and inspection services on diamond rings. Blue Nile also offer a buyback option through Mondiamo if your return does not qualify for the lifetime warranty terms and conditions.

Other things of note

We like the fact that they work under ethical mining and conflict-free diamond purchasing policies. They’re proud supporters of the Kimberley Process for tracking and certifying diamonds. Two thumbs up on that.

What We Don’t Like

Ok, so just a couple of small issues here:

Routine Maintenance Fees

Blue Nile does have a less flexible policy when it comes to routine maintenance. They charge for things like re-polishing, prong tightening, and rhodium plating for white gold rings. If you do opt to pay for these services, you’ll also be paying for return shipping.

Extra Charge for Engraving

Engraving services aren’t complimentary either. That may seem petty because they don’t charge a ton extra for it (25-ish dollars). But when you’re dropping that kinda dough on a ring, you’d think they’d throw that kind of thing in for free.

Packaging

Another thing that’s a small disadvantage for Blue Nile is the quality of their packaging. It’s nice, but in our opinion, could (and should) be a bit posher. After all, this is what you’re presenting when you ask for his or her hand in marriage.

James Allen

What We Like

As with Blue Nile, there’s lots to like about James Allen, but here are the key things that make them stand out:

James Allen website homepage image

Inventory Quality And Selection

Blue Nile carries a more diverse selection of colored gemstones and other kinds of fine jewelry, but James Allen is the king of the hill when it comes to engagement rings.

Their selection of loose diamonds is more extensive and more diverse than Blue Nile. They also have more to choose from in the settings category. If you want to build your own engagement ring, James Allen has more options in stock.

They are also pretty strict about their curating standards when it comes to their cut diamonds, so you know you’re getting something quality. Not that Blue Nile doesn’t sell quality diamonds, they absolutely do, but James Allen takes it a step or two further.

Customer Service

James Allen’s customer service policies are similar to those of Blue Nile. They offer price match guarantees, 24/7 customer support, and both offer lifetime manufacturer’s warranties.

Unlike Blue Nile, however, James Allen also offers services like rhodium plating, prong tightening, and re-polishing for free in addition to cleanings. They also offer free engraving services.

These are great perks, but it’s worth noting that James Allen’s prices do tend to be a bit higher than Blue Nile’s, so in the end those ‘free’ services are probably just built into the price tag.

Posh Packaging

James Allen’s packaging is pretty darn posh, and we think when you’re presenting the love of your life with an engagement ring, that’s a big deal. It may seem silly, but when you’re down on one knee, you quickly realize it isn’t.

What We Don’t Like

Here are a few drawbacks to James Allen:

Newer Company, Fewer Showrooms

So one of the things we could see being a potential setback is that James Allen is much newer to the business and has fewer brick-and-mortar showrooms. Fewer meaning two. Blue Nile has somewhere in the ballpark of five (as of the date this article was written).

Limited Selection of Gemstones

The fact that they specialize in diamond engagement rings is a good thing if that’s what you’re looking for. If you want sapphire or emerald or something different, James Allen’s selection is limited.

A Bit Pricier

While price comparisons are pretty hard to make when it comes to diamonds, we can get a more reliable idea of who has the best prices by looking at settings. Turns out, James Allen is a bit pricier than Blue Nile when we compare the same settings. While it may not be a huge difference, as my grandmother used to say, “pennies make dollars.”

Takeaways

Our takeaway? Thank goodness for online jewelry shopping. There are just so many benefits to this option.

We know it makes many people nervous because they feel more confident if they can actually see and hold the ring before they buy it. With the bulletproof no-risk return policies these online retailers offer, however, it’s kind of a moot point.

So who’s the best? Depends on what you’re shopping for and how you judge quality.

Both companies are reputable. Both offer excellent customer service and inventory options, and both will treat you well because they want your business.

If you want a more personalized, specialty engagement ring, James Allen is probably where you’ll end up. If you want to find something easy peasy and more readily accessible, or want something besides a diamond, try Blue Nile.

Either way, happy ring hunting! May the jewelry gods smile upon you and give you a great deal!

Your new mother-in-law knows her baby more than anyone, and she’ll be happy to pass on their kindness to you. She’ll also give you a knowing nod when you complain about their bad habits. You know, like when they leave their stuff all over the place, for instance.

Show her how thankful you are to her for raising the fantastic person you fell in love with. She’ll love you all the more for your generosity and thoughtfulness!
