21st Anniversary Gifts For The Romantic At Heart

The giving of wedding anniversary gifts specific to how long a couple has been together has its origins with the Holy Roman Empire or the superstitious Middle Ages. Maybe.

All we know is, 21st wedding anniversary gifts seem to have no origins in superstition or ancient history.

But before you give up and opt for a necktie to say ‘I still love you after 21 years’, keep reading.

At some point in history, some clever person (or people) designated three types of symbolic gifts to celebrate a wedding anniversary: Traditional, modern, and alternate. Later on, an official flower and precious stone were added to the list as well.

In other words, if you want to stick with the custom of giving a specific gift that aligns with the number of years you’ve been married, you really have up to five different types of inspiration.

For a 21st wedding anniversary, it is now seen as customary to give brass, nickel, iris, or iolite.  Notably, there is no ‘traditional’ 21st anniversary gift, but brass and nickel are considered the modern options.

So there you go! Now you don’t have to worry about giving your beloved a big box of empty for your anniversary!

There are plenty of meaningful, symbolic things to give that celebrate 21 years of wedded bliss, and we’ve got a perfect list of ’em right here.

How To Write A Maid Of Honor Speech (Examples And Advice)

Some of the best speeches at weddings are the maid of honor speeches. You’ve been chosen for this special role because you know things about the bride that her parents don’t (and maybe some that should stay that way..ahem). You’ve also probably been through thick and thin together.

You may want to share some kind words about the groom, but it’s what you say to the bride during your speech that will matter the most at this time of transition in her life.

She needs to know you’re her Girl Friday, and you’ve got her back through every milestone. Your maid of honor speech is one of the best ways to deliver that message.

maid of honor giving speech to bride and groom

So, bearing all of the above in mind, you might be feeling apprehensive about your speech. After all, she chose YOU to be her best bestie on her big day and everyone’s going to be waiting with bated breath for your words of wisdom and hilarious anecdotes from the times you’ve spent together.

Well, we’re to tell you there’s zero reason to worry about your speech. It’s your best friend’s wedding day and all she wants is to have you by her side. No one is expecting you to deliver a Shakespearean soliloquy or do a stand-up comedy act.

Just deliver heartfelt words and you’ll be golden. We promise. To help you put together a great speech, we’ve put together this handy guide. Keep reading for useful advice, a template for your speech, and some inspiring examples of maid of honour speeches.

Rules and Etiquette

Before you get started on your cue cards, there are a few things to get out of the way in terms of etiquette.

Keep it clean

We put this one first because sometimes it’s soooo hard to keep it PG when we’ve got so much hilarious dirt on our best girl (especially after a few drinks at the open bar).

Try to refrain, though. Obviously, her parents are there, his parents are there, and who knows how many other family members with ears on you.

It could make it super awkward if everyone heard about what happened at the bachelorette party. Let the best man commit that faux pas; it’s entirely possible that he will.

maid of honor giving speech

Do your homework

You probably already know who is on the guest list, but you may not know some of the guests’ plus ones. If you can, find out about who’s coming that you don’t know. You don’t want to run the risk of offending someone or making them uncomfortable if the subject matter steers toward one of the big four topics to avoid. Keep reading for more on those.

Watch out for touchy topics

Best to steer clear of money issues unless they flatter the bride and groom. Definitely best to steer clear of politics. And definitely, definitely leave family dirt in the ground.

There’s nothing more awkward than accidentally (or purposefully) calling someone on the carpet for family strife. Everyone there probably already knows that her dad’s new wife threw a tantrum and made a scene at Thanksgiving. But leave it unsaid. No matter how funny it was.

Suppose the wedding had a religious ceremony, and the bride/groom’s families are religious. In that case, that may be something to mention if it is relevant to you, too. Just be sensitive and keep it as inclusive as possible.

So to recap. Money, politics, religion, and family drama – the BIG FOUR no-go topics.

IF YOU REMEMBER NOTHING ELSE, REMEMBER THIS:

NO jokes about divorce.

NO jokes about exes.

All righty, beyond that…

Keep the comedy coming

Everyone loves a funny wedding speech, and you’re among the top three who have the best opportunity to give one. If you’ve had any fun together at all (which obviously you have, or you wouldn’t be the maid of honor), you’ll have a virtual goldmine of funny stories about the bride. Again, as long as they’re PG, serve ’em up.

maid of honor giving speech with bride laughing

If comedy isn’t your strong suit, no biggie. A moving tribute to her, her new husband, and how great they are together is just as entertaining when it’s well-spoken.

Watch your time

Unfortunately, no matter how many great stories you could tell, you’ve only got a short time to speak. Time yourself after you’ve written out your speech to make sure it’s no longer than seven minutes. An ideal speech will be five minutes or less.

Don’t get too emotional- you’ve got mascara to think about!

Oh jeez, this one will probably be harder than keeping it PG. Keep some hankies tucked away, but try to laugh through the tears of joy. Some people get awkward and just don’t know how to deal with it when other people cry.

Make An Outline

Right. Standard etiquette out of the way. Time to start writing it all down. Start with an outline, then round out the details after you’ve got the bones to your speech figured out.

Introduce yourself

This is an important opener, as not everyone may know you yet. Superfast: who you are, and how you are related to the bride and groom.

If there’s a person or two you feel deserves special recognition and would like to thank, go ahead, but make it quick. Usually, it’s up to the parentals and groom to thank everyone for coming.

Storytime

Include a little bit about how you met. Were you friends right out of the gate? Is there a funny story about how you didn’t gel at first?

Talk about what makes you so tight close and what you bond over. Tell stories about some of the adventures you’ve shared.

Talk about the groom

Make sure you take some time to talk about her new husband! Share a recollection of your first time meeting and your impressions of him. This is an excellent time for funny stories too, and it’s also the perfect time to outline what you love about the groom and how happy you are that he makes her happy.

Talk about the bride

Now is when the waterworks will probably begin. Try to keep it together as you talk about all of the things that make her extraordinary. Let her know how much you appreciate her. Tell everyone what she means to you and what a great friend she is.

If there are things you’re particularly proud of her for, things like accomplishments, acts of selflessness, all those great things, now is the time to let her know.

maid of honor giving speech

Share some thoughts about them as a couple

Why are you so glad they’re together? What makes them so great for each other? What is your wish for them in the future?

If you’re already married, you can talk about all the things you love about marriage and impart those wishes on her.

Raise a toast

Here’s an excellent opportunity to let her know (briefly) how honored you are to be chosen as maid of honor and invite everyone to raise a toast to the newlyweds. If you’ve got a closer for this one, leave it with the toast, or you could say something simple like “To happily ever afters. Thanks for sharing yours with us.”

Maid Of Honor Speech Examples

You’ve got your outline done and now you just need to put the final touches on your speech and master the delivery. Easy peasy! Hey, you’ve got this sista, we know it and you should too. But if you need some extra confidence-boosting inspiration, we strongly suggest you check out these awesome maid of honour speeches. If these gals can do it, we know you can too!

Sisterly Love and Laughs

Love this sister’s speech. It’s so funny and heartfelt, it was fantastic. And it was all a smidge over four minutes. Masterful.

Hilarious and So Well Delivered!

This speech is nothing short of awesome. Not to mention entertaining.

An Epic…Performance

Somehow this fabulous maid of honor has managed to get by breaking the divorce rule (kind of, in a way) like a BOSS. She’s hilarious and fun, and someone better recognize that daring karaoke remix for the glorious thing it is.

Parting Advice

You’re gonna have a blast writing your maid of honor speech, particularly if you had a bachelorette party for her where everyone reminisced over your years together.

When your best friend gets married, you inherit with her all the good times (and sometimes bad) she’ll experience in married life. Let her know you can’t wait to be there for the next part of her life’s journey.

A Memorable Father-Of-The Bride Speech: Tips, Tricks, And Examples

Dear Dads,

We know you’re nervous about making a father-of-the-bride speech at your little girl’s wedding. We won’t mince words here. You should be.

This is why you’re probably furiously Googling “father of the bride speech examples,” so someone will tell you what to say.

Right.

Your job is to make everyone laugh and cry tears of joy. As the head honcho of your household (ok, second to your wife), it falls on your head to get it right, or you’ll ruin everything.

Make it funny, but short. Make it moving, but not too personal.

All of that is hooey, of course, but you probably feel that way all the same.

We want to help, so we’ve put together a father-of-the-bride speech outline to help you decide what to say and remember when to say it.

Simple Father Of The Bride Speech Template

Step One: Know The Rules And Etiquette

Before you get to writing, there are some basic speech rules and etiquette you should consider to avoid disaster and embarrassment.

  • Do Your Homework

Call in the cavalry. There are no rules that say your speech can’t be a collaborative effort. If you’re unsure what to talk about, ask those who know her best for stories and anecdotes.

Find out who’s invited that you may not know so well. It helps to keep in mind who your audience will be.

  • Watch Your Time

Seven. Minutes. That’s the maximum time a father-of-the-bride speech ought to last. Anything more prolonged, and you’ll lose them. If you can, aim for six.

  • No Cliches, Find Ways To Be Unique

Talk about the qualities your daughter has that set her apart. Of course she’s brilliant and talented and beautiful. Anyone who knows her knows that.

Avoid a resume-like list of her career or education, unless you can link that to a funny story or something that pertains to her new husband.

  • Avoid Talking About Money, Religion, Or Politics

Just like at dinner parties (because let’s face it, that’s kind of what a wedding reception is), the rule is to avoid talking politics, religion, or money.

Of course, it’s entirely appropriate to thank God and, by all means, prayers up. But use good judgment and keep it PC.

  • Keep It Clean

We probably don’t have to mention it, but we will anyway. Nothing will suck the air out of the room like a tasteless joke or inappropriate anecdote from Dad. Gross.

  • Aim For Funny, But Avoid Inside Jokes

Yes, you want to be funny, that’s a given. Remember, you are the master of the Dad Joke. Work it. Just avoid inside jokes, it may alienate some of the guests.

  • Don’t Get Too Emotional, Keep It Light

Just like you want to make ’em laugh, making your audience tear up is gratifying, too. But make sure you don’t go overboard and make it awkward.

  • Keep Your Family Strife Out Of It

It’s unbelievable how often people give speeches like this and veer off onto a tangent about family quarrels.

If you and your daughter’s mother are no longer together and aren’t on the best of terms, keep it out of the speech. If you and her mother’s new significant other don’t get along, now is not the time.

Grandfather wedding speech

If someone’s not speaking to Aunt Tilly or the bride’s cousin ruined another family wedding by getting drunk and hitting on the groom’s mother: Do. Not. Make it a thing.

Seems like common sense, but people are mysterious creatures.

Step Two: Brainstorm

Crafting an unforgettable father of the bride speech requires a bit of preparation, and the most important part of that preparation is brainstorming your ideas and outlining your speech. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Find your Voice

Every father has a unique personality and relationship with his daughter. While it can be tempting to emulate speeches found online, it is essential to infuse your own authentic voice and personal anecdotes into your address.

  • Think of personal anecdotes

Reflect on your relationship with both the bride and groom, and write down any memories, jokes, or stories that you think would be relevant or entertaining.

  • Consider the structure of your speech

Your speech should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The introduction should capture the audience’s attention and set the tone for the rest of your speech. The body should be divided into several sections, each highlighting a different aspect of your relationship with the bride and groom. The conclusion should tie everything together and leave a lasting impression..

Step Three: Make An Outline

OK, with etiquette out of the way (but not out of mind), it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty — the fun part! When you make your outline, by all means, write it all on cue cards and use them. Whatever you need to keep focused.

  • Opening Line/Introduce Yourself

Every good speech needs an opener, but it doesn’t have to be stand-up material. A quick introduction and welcoming the guests will do nicely.

  • Thank Your Wife, The Groom’s Parents, The Officiant, etc.

This is another part you can get through quickly. It’ll be tempting to spend a lot of time on this one, but keep in mind that you can thank everyone more thoroughly and one-on-one throughout the reception.

Father making a wedding speech

Unless there’s something particular you feel the need to say, a quick thanks will do.

  • Share A Story Or Two and Don’t Forget The Groom

The moment everyone’s been waiting for: dad making fun of his daughter and her new husband. Gently, of course.

Seriously, though, this is the time to be funny. Mention the first time you met your new son-in-law and what you thought of him (if it’s not seriously negative). Talk about funny things from her childhood, as long as they’re not mortifyingly embarrassing.

The material for this part is rich, mine it.

  • Impart Some Fatherly Wisdom

So you’ve made them laugh, now make them say “awwwww.”

Pass on what you’ve learned about life, love, and happiness – things that worked for you, and maybe things that didn’t work so well if you can keep it light.

If there’s a deceased family member that your daughter was particularly fond of, now is an excellent time to hand down any wisdom they imparted to you.

  • Raise A Toast

The toast can stay short and sweet, all you have to do now is invite everyone to raise a glass to the newlywed’s happiness. Done and done.

Step Four: Practice

When it comes to giving a memorable father of the bride speech, practice is key. You don’t want to be reading from a script or stumble over your words on such an important occasion. Here are some tips to help you practice and deliver your speech with confidence:

  • Write out your speech

Before you begin to practice, make sure that you have a draft of your speech. It does not have to be perfect at this stage, but it should have all the key points that you want to make. Writing out your speech will help you organize your thoughts and ensure that you have covered all the necessary elements.

  • Practice in front of a mirror

Practicing in front of a mirror allows you to see your facial expressions and gestures. It also helps you to work on your eye contact and body language, which are important when delivering a speech.

  • Record yourself

Another way to practice is to record yourself giving the speech. This allows you to listen to your tone of voice, pacing, and areas that need improvement.

  • Get feedback

Ask a trusted friend or family member to listen to your speech and give you feedback. They can offer suggestions on delivery, pacing, and content.

  • Practice in the wedding venue

If possible, practice your speech in the actual wedding venue. This will give you a sense of the acoustics and how your voice will carry. It also helps you visualize the setting, which can help calm nerves and build confidence.

Remember, the more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you will be when delivering your father of the bride speech. Trust in yourself and your message, and enjoy the moment.

Prepare to get educated…

Heartwarming Father-of-the-Bride Speech (Get Out the Hankie!)

This father offers up a funny and heartwarming speech, along with a few props that take this speech to another level.

Hilarious Father-of-the-Bride Speech That Includes the Groom’s Family

He’s included the groom’s family in this speech in the best way ever. Not to mention the hilarity of his son-in-law story! We’re dyin’ over here!

Some Parting Advice

The speeches are arguably the best part of the reception, next to the open bar and dancing. Ahem.

Although it may feel like it, no one expects the world from the father-of-the-bride when he toasts the happy couple.

It’s your job to be sincere, remind everyone of what makes your daughter so wonderful, and tell the room why you’re thrilled to gain a son-in-law.

Do that, and the rest will fall into place. Next thing you know you’ll be grabbing a martini, loosening your tie and breathing a sigh of relief that you nailed that speech. Now to nail those dance moves you’ve been practicing!

20 Thoughtful Godparent Gifts That Show You Care

Think about the people in your life who influence you the most. If you’re lucky enough to have godparents in your life, they probably fall under that category.

Whether you’re a parent looking for a thoughtful godparent gift, or you’re the godchild of a caring godparent, it can be a little challenging to find just the right thing.

You know we’re all about helping create inspiration for gift-giving at L&L, which is why we put together this list of twenty godparent gifts they’ll love!

During our quest to pick the perfect godparent gifts, we also delved into the role of a godparent, what it means to be a godparent, and took a look at some traditional gifts to give godparents. Keep reading for all the juicy details and our favourite gift ideas!

Godparent FAQ

Most of us know at least one thing about being a godparent: It’s an honour to be asked to take on this role and all that it involves. Here’s the scoop on all the other things about being a godparent that you may or may not have known.

What constitutes the role of a godparent?

In the Christian tradition, a godparent is someone who bears witness to a child’s christening, not someone who shows up and sends you to the ball in a pumpkin carriage. You probably already knew that, though.

As the child grows, it is the godparent’s role to take responsibility for the child’s spiritual education and formation. Non-Christian faiths like Santería and Judaism have similar traditions.

What are the expectations of being a godparent?

The answer to this question depends largely upon the godparent’s relationship to the parents, and how devoutly religious they are.

For extremely religious families, upon christening, the godparents share co-parenting responsibilities with the child’s natural parents. (This is where the terms Compadre and Comadre originate.)

For others, the role can be a little more relaxed, with the godparent definitely present but not necessarily co-parenting. For some, a godparent is designated as the legal custodian of a child in the case of the parents’ death.

For others, a godparent can simply be someone very close to the family that the parents want to have an influence on the kid’s life and can provide guidance and support whenever needed.

What are traditional godparent gifts?

  • Religious Gifts

A religious gift is a very traditional choice, considering the formal role of a godparent. Items like prayer books, jewelry or home decor with crosses or inspirational messages, anything that reminds the godparent how thankful you are for their spiritual influence.

  • Personalized Gifts

Monogrammed gifts are always a good bet, particularly if you can incorporate the godchild’s birthdate or christening date.

  • Gifts With Godparent Themes

If you’re looking for a Christmas gift, a godparent ornament is always nice, or picture frames, mugs, etc. As long as it brags about how great your godparents are!

How much is customary to spend on a godparent gift?

There aren’t really too many guidelines for this one, and it depends on who’s doing the giving. Normally, gifts from godchildren aren’t expected at all, and gifts from parents can range from modest to extravagant, depending upon the circumstances.

If you are a godchild, and you’d really love to give your godparent a gift, anything with personal meaning is best.

On what occasions do you gift a godparent?

Godparents generally don’t expect a gift at the baby’s christening, or on the anniversary of the christening (yes, for many, that’s a thing).

The honor of being asked to be a godparent is a gift in itself. Still, many parents give gifts as a heartfelt expression of appreciation to their child’s godparents.

As they get older, a godchild may want to give their godparents a gift for birthdays and holidays as well, so there are plenty of occasions where a godparent gift is appropriate.

11 Tungsten Wedding Bands Made To Last Forever

Much like the man who chooses a tungsten wedding band, this alternative metal is useful, functional, and strong. Like 10x stronger than 18K gold. It’s used to make stuff like missiles and heavy machinery. It’s no-nonsense. It can endure anything. And, like your marriage, it’s going to last forever.

Ok, before we go any further, I can’t resist. I have to tell you that its chemical symbol is W, from its original Germanic name wolframite. In German, Wolfram means… wait for it… DEVOURER OF TIN!! Tungsten eats other metals (sort of…) for BREAKFAST. So, it’s pretty much the badass of metals, just sayin’.

Pretty manly, yeah? If a men’s tungsten wedding band sounds right up your alley (or wolf lair), check out these 11 designs that caught our, erm, manly eye.

Tungsten Tips

Before we get down to it, let’s address the elephant in the room.

Apparently, there’s a long-held belief that tungsten rings can’t be removed in an emergency. They’ve got to cut your finger off, instead. Sounds like fun right?!  Well, let’s set the record straight:

  • Tungsten rings can totally be removed in an emergency situation!!

If they couldn’t, I seriously doubt anyone would wear one. And plenty of people wear tungsten, so don’t worry about it. Instead of being cut off, the get ‘cracked’ off in an emergency.

So what else do you need to know about tungsten before wearing it on your finger forever?

  • Tungsten’s got some heft

Tungsten isn’t just sturdy, it’s also quite heavy compared to other similar metals. Some men really like that weight, which makes sense from a couple of different angles, particularly if you’re afraid of losing it.

  • You can’t resize it

When trying on tungsten rings, take into careful consideration the fact that you can’t resize it!  Get your finger properly sized by a jeweler (skip the string measuring, there’s no room for error here). If you’re prone to weight gain or swelling in the fingers, consider bumping your ring size up a notch  (as long as it doesn’t slip off your finger, of course).

  • Doesn’t bend, but it’s not totally unbreakable

Unlike most other materials, tungsten won’t bend under pressure, but it can crack. If you’re into finger safety, this is a good thing.

Much better to break your band than watch it flatten your finger like a cartoon if you end up stuck with your hand in a press or something like that.

  • The price is right

Tungsten is nice and affordable, so if you do happen to have a ring-cracking or weight-gaining situation (or both), it won’t cost too much to replace it. It also won’t tarnish or scratch easily.

Looking sharp without breaking the bank? Yes, please.

  • How to care for your ring

As with most other natural metals, it’s recommended that you remove your ring if you’re going to be working with harsh chemicals. Other than that, it’s pretty low maintenance. Clean with mild soap and water, then polish with a soft cloth. Easy peasy.

Thoughts On Tungsten

The kind of guy who wears a tungsten wedding band is generally a “take-no-malarkey” kinda man, and we’re down with that.

While many still prefer traditionally symbolic metals like gold and silver, most men’s wedding bands on the market today are forged from less common materials. Tungsten is one of the relative newcomers to the game, and it’s got a lot to bring to the table in terms of affordability, durability, and diversity of style choices.

Hopefully, you’ve learned something new about tungsten, and our choices have struck a chord with you. Shopping for wedding bands is a lot of fun for us here at L&L, but we know it’s not fun for everyone, which is why we love sharing our picks.

If you’re not completely sold on tungsten, may we suggest you take a look at some other ring options in our blogs. You might just learn some interesting-but-possibly-useless trivia about precious metals, and (more importantly) figure out how to choose the right band for you.

We’re here for ya.

Bypass Pear Shaped Blue Sapphire Ring

I love a traditional, solitaire engagement ring and up until now I never thought I could love a style of ring more, but this piece has changed the game. It has all of the elements of my favorite style – a solitary gemstone and a thin, clean cut band – with a creative flair that I can’t keep my eyes off of.

Why Choose a Blue Sapphire Engagement Ring?

There are so many great reasons to make a blue sapphire the stone you put on her finger forever. Here are just a few:

She Dares To Be Different

Certainly, more and more brides are opting for sapphires (and other colored stones) to take center stage in their engagement ring setting because it stands out in a crowd. A splash of color can take an engagement ring from beautiful to dazzling, which is perfect for your dare-to-be-different gal.

Now don’t get me wrong.  If my husband were to jump up off the sofa in the middle of his beloved Formula One race and say “Hey, can I get you a brand new diamond ring? You interested?” I wouldn’t say no. I’d take his temperature, but I definitely wouldn’t say no.

That said, the sentiment that  “A diamond is forever” is getting left in the dust, and it’s about time. The notion that if he doesn’t give us a diamond he clearly thinks we’re secondhand goods has been around since 1938. It’s outdated, to say the least, not to mention a straight-up tricky marketing campaign engineered by diamond companies.

She’s Socially-Conscious

Most sapphires are sourced from small, independently-owned family mines. This means that every sapphire you buy is most likely supporting hard-working families and their communities.

But how can we be sure of where her sapphire is coming from? How do we know it’s an ethically sourced stone? The short answer is there’s no way to know for sure, but it helps that sapphires are generally more traceable. That makes it easier to determine their origins and the conditions in which they were mined and transported.

Also, procedures and standards set by the World Jewelry Confederation help ensure the business of buying and selling sapphires remains as ethical as possible. For instance, in Sri Lanka, the government put regulations in place forbidding mechanical mining so locally-owned mines can stay in business.

She Knows A Good Thing When She Sees It

The most valuable blue sapphires are often the most saturated in hue, and it’s usually easier to spot a quality blue sapphire than other colors.

A good quality sapphire should be vivid and velvety, sometimes with a super subtle tinge of violet. If your sapphire is too dark, too light, or even grayish in color, it’s probably not as valuable.

Even the British royal family favors blue sapphires. As we mentioned above, the family hosts one of the most famous blue sapphire engagement rings ever.

The origins of the royal family’s love affair with blue sapphires go way, way back to the mid-19th century with Queen Victoria’s equally-famous blue sapphire and diamond brooch. Anyway, you get the point. If it’s good enough for England’s monarchs, it’s good enough for us.

She Values Strength

With a score of 9 out of 10, sapphires are among the strongest of stones according to the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. They’re durable, strong enough to go with her everywhere, and can stand the test of time. If that’s not symbolic of your love, I don’t know what is.

She’s Financially-Savvy

Carat for carat, sapphires are a much better value than diamonds without sacrificing quality and beauty. They also retain their value brilliantly, so once you’ve introduced a blue sapphire into the family, you can bet it will become a beloved heirloom.

More About Sapphires

If you’re interested in a more comprehensive guide to how to choose a sapphire engagement ring, check out this article we published a little while back for some more tips and info to help you choose the best ring for her.

Each sapphire has its own personality, and with so many hues of blues from which to choose (ha! I rhyme all the time!), you’re bound to find one that’s perfect for your sweetheart. Happy sapphire shopping

15 Men’s Wood Wedding Bands including Koa, Redwood and even Whisky Barrel!

Wood wedding bands are fast becoming a popular choice for those searching for a men’s ring with a special twist. They bring an organic flavor to traditional wedding bands with various types of wood and materials found in nature.

A symbol of strength and growth, wood seems like the perfect choice for a unique wedding ring! Wood brings connection to our roots, nature, and history when wood was used for everything from tools to fuel for a fire to jewelry.

They also are just plain and simply – unique. With each piece having different textures, grains, and shades of color, no two are alike. I predict you can be quite confident that people will notice and ask about your wood ring.

Mens Wood Ring FAQ

How Are They Made, and What Are They Made Of?

These rings are made using various techniques from being carved out of a single block of wood to being wrapped around a cylinder of metal. You can find rings with wood inlays or wood overlays. “Bentwood” rings are made from bending wood strips into a cylinder and securing them with a special adhesive. It’s also very common to find wood combined with metals such as titanium or gold.

Many other natural materials are gaining popularity in combination with wood. These can be anything from deer antler to gemstones and minerals, to moss and meteorite.

Are They Strong?

While wooden rings are not as strong as a solid metal ring, they are surprisingly durable. In general, wooden wedding bands are very solid and built to last. Most are water-resistant and many are sealed with a finish that makes them waterproof. If you purchase a water-resistant ring, it’s generally recommended that you take it off when swimming or showering if you want to be sure your ring doesn’t get damaged.

As with any type of jewelry, it’s important to remove rings when cleaning and using chemicals.

How much do Wood Wedding Bands Cost?

For the most part, wooden rings are a more affordable option than precious metals. If you choose to select a ring with materials such as diamonds, obviously that will begin approaching traditional precious metal ring price points. Precious and authentic rare materials and customization will also cost a little more. However, for those looking for a more affordable alternative, wood rings are a great choice.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get into some of our favorite crafted wood rings available for your special day. From budget options to more luxurious choices, we’ve covered all bases with our top fifteen wood ring picks.

Wooden wedding bands are the perfect choice for a couple searching for an inexpensive, eco-friendly, one-of-a-kind wedding ring designed with high quality workmanship.

Why Wood for a Wedding Band?

There a couple different reasons why one would choose to have a wooden wedding band made for your man. One, depending on what type of finish is on the ring, a wood ring in most cases is hypoallergenic.  Making it a fantastic option for anyone who suffers from metal allergies.

Two, if nature plays a big part of your life along with the values of renew and recycle, than a wood ring makes a very meaningful choice.

Two Types of Wood Rings – When shopping for a wood ring you are bound to come across two different types of rings, bentwood and wood inlay.

Bentwood Ring

A bent wood ring is process rather than an actual wood tyep. It is  where they steam thin wood strips until soften and then slowly wrap them around a cylinder, while applying a special bonding agent.

  • Bentwood rings are extremely durable. The special bonding glue that is applied helps give the ring strength and also preserves the wood.
  • They are not waterproof but are highly water resistance
  • They will require maintenance over time where the ring should be re-polished with the bonding agent.
  • Depending on the type of wood used, bentwood rings should be able to handle a few bumps here and there and most marks can be repaired. Some woods are harder than others, but we will cover that more below.

Wood Inlay Rings

Wood inlay rings are where the wood is inlaid into a metal like titanium or tungsten.  They are durable but can still break.

  • From the thick resin layer, wood inlay rings are 100% waterproof.
  • The only real maintenance they need is to be polished with a soft cloth.
  • They can withstand everyday wear and tear a lot better than a bentwood ring.

Pros of Wooden Wedding Rings

  • Eco-friendly characteristics
  • They come in a variety of styles: plain wood bands, colorful inlay designs and braided patterns. They can even be set with diamonds or gemstones.
  • Wood wedding rings are in most cases hypoallergenic
  • No two are exactly alike
  • Affordable ring choice
  • Poor conductor of heat and electricity
  • They can be customize and engraved

Cons of wooden wedding bands

  • Bentwood rings will require special care instructions both with regards to wear and maintenance. (Long periods of being in water, exposure to creams, oils, chemicals and hard knocks should be avoided)
  • They cannot be resized

Best Types of Wood for a Wooden Ring

When choosing a wood band, the best types of hardwood to look for are oak, walnut, birch, maple, dogwood, applewood, ash, hickory, cherry, aspen, elm, poplar, and eucalyptus.  Each of these woods have their own unique grain and a special meaning behind them.

If eco-friendly rings are top priority, please be aware of endangered woods like mahogany, Brazilwood, rosewood, Madagascar Ebony, Spanish Cedar, and sandalwood. If you do however fancy one of these listed, just make sure it has been collected sustainably. (ie.  branches found on the forest floor.)

8 White Sapphire Engagement Rings to Totally Dazzle Her!

Many can’t tell the difference between white sapphire and diamond. When you have a look at the white sapphire engagement rings we’ve showcased in this article, you’ll see why.

It’s said that ancient Greek petitioners wore the white sapphire while consulting with their oracles (like the ones in Delphi). The sapphire purportedly made the oracles’ language clearer to the wearers. It’s also said to represent the traits of fairness, objectivity, and morality.

The sentiment behind giving a white sapphire engagement ring to the woman you love is just as profound as its symbolism and history, which is why shopping for one can be a bit daunting.

Not to worry! We’ve done some of the legwork for you and found some white sapphire engagement rings we think she’ll love as much as we do…

The design was inspired by the Blake Lively engagement ring. Now, you may have noticed during your shopping adventures there are a lot of engagement rings out there touting that they’re inspired by the Blake Lively ring. “What’s up with that?” you ask? Have a look, and be prepared for the shock.

Guide To Buying White Sapphires

Before you plunk down your hard-earned cash, we wanted to arm you with a little information about the gemstone itself and what to look for when you’re shopping for white sapphire engagement rings.

But first, let’s get down to the question that’s usually on everyone’s mind when they see a white sapphire:

What’s the Difference Between a White Sapphire and a Diamond?

Besides the name, white sapphires and diamonds differ in a few areas.

Price

It only takes one glance at the price of a white sapphire engagement ring to see the dramatic difference in price, carat for carat.

For instance, the average price of a 1.5ct natural white sapphire is around $1,200 to $1,500. Compare that to a 1.5ct natural diamond, which will set you back anywhere from $6,500 to $15,000 depending on cut, clarity, and appearance.

Appearance

The inner fire and brilliance of a diamond are undeniable. Still, some white sapphires can give them a run for their money (for less money). For most gemstones, its brilliance is dependent on how it’s cut, and a beautifully-cut white sapphire can seriously sparkle.

The luster of white sapphire varies from stone to stone. An expert will be able to distinguish the difference between a diamond and a white sapphire. To most, however, the two are often indistinguishable.

Hardness Factor

On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, a diamond is the only stone to score a perfect 10. Sapphires score a 9, making them quite durable as well. They stand up beautifully to everyday wear, which is important seeing as she’ll be wearing it every day. They do, however, have a tendency to scratch a little more easily than diamonds.

How Do I Know if it’s a Quality White Sapphire?

GIA Analysis

Diamonds are officially graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). To learn a little more about how that works, check out GIA’s website.

While sapphires aren’t graded in the same way, GIA publishes reports on a sapphire’s place of origin and whether it’s been treated. By treated, we don’t mean if everyone’s been nice to it; we’re talking about how it’s synthesized in the lab, if it’s a lab-created sapphire (more on that to come).

GIA also rates the stones’ transparency, color, weight, shape, cutting style, and size measurements. If you’d like to have her white sapphire analyzed, you can find out how here.

Color

Many professionals say that color is one of the biggest measurements of a sapphire’s value. Sapphires come in a vast array of colors (except red, those are rubies), but when choosing a white sapphire, pick a stone that’s as colorless as possible.

Clarity

Sapphires of all colors will almost always have slight imperfections due to mineralization during the crystallization process as well as a few other factors. These imperfections affect their clarity. The same rules apply with white sapphires as with other gemstones: the fewer flaws it has, the more valuable it is.

Cut

Like other gemstones, the cut of a sapphire affects its hue and “sparkle factor.” As you may have noticed from our sapphire engagement ring choices above, sapphires come in all kinds of cuts – round, emerald, ovals, and cushion, to name a few.

When considering the cut, the second most important consideration is its depth. (The first, of course, is whether she’ll like the cut.) If you end up purchasing a white sapphire online, take it to a jeweler to have it examined. He or she can tell you if the cuts are too shallow or too deep. We want them just right. Like the porridge that Goldilocks ate.

Carat

With any precious stone, the higher the carat, the more valuable it is. A little gemstone 101 for you: a gem’s carat size refers to its weight. So the heavier the rock, the more it costs.

A Quick Note On Natural vs. Lab-Created Sapphires

Since natural sapphires are mined straight from the earth, they don’t need to be treated like lab-created white sapphires do. Mother Nature has done all of that process herself.

There are plenty of reasons why some prefer natural sapphires:

  • The idea of presenting your bride-to-be with a gem that was naturally-sourced from the earth over possibly millions of years is pretty darn romantic.
  • Tradition often mandates that naturally occurring stones are often more meaningful to the intended recipient. A lab-created stone just doesn’t seem as special to some people.
  • Of course, a naturally-mined white sapphire is also rarer, which directly influences its value.

Since an engagement ring is symbolic of a long life together, many purchase a ring with the ultimate purpose of passing it down among the generations, and a ring with a naturally-mined stone will retain its value better than a lab-created sapphire.

Lab-created sapphires have their own set of positive considerations as well:

  • Growing gemstones in a lab is a controlled process and allows for more customized options for shape and size. Depending on how the stone has been treated (see, we told you we’d be bringing it up again), it can intensify the stone’s brilliance and hue.

The recommendation among the experts is to always purchase a lab-created white sapphire that has been heat-treated. If you’re unsure, ask the seller specifically how it was treated.

  • Laboratory-created sapphires are less expensive than naturally-mined ones.
  • Production of white sapphires in a lab is often thought of as more ethical and less invasive to the Earth than blasting into mountains and tunneling down there to mine them.

Some may disagree with this observation, and the issue isn’t as simple as all that. Still, the ethical implications of how and where a precious gemstone was acquired is something to take into consideration.

Go Boldly Forward

Now that we’ve given you some practical information and a short list of some of the most beautiful white sapphire engagement rings we could find, you’re ready to go get that ring!
