7 Medieval Wedding Dresses in a Modern Style

In this article, let’s think outside the box by looking at medieval-style wedding gowns! We’ll dive into the traditions behind medieval wedding dresses, show you some fabulous and varying styles, and provide examples of some of the most breathtaking medieval wedding dresses out there.

Readeth on my lady and discov’r the quaintest dresses thee’ve ev’r laid eyes upon. Sorry, couldn’t help myself with a little nod to old English!

Why Choose A Medieval Wedding Dress

It understandable if you haven’t considered this style before, or you feel it’s out of your comfort zone. However, there are many, many reasons to choose a beautiful medieval wedding dress.

1. Memorable

When it seems like everyone you know is getting married, it can be diffcult to find a dress that stands out and makes a lasting impression. One thing I can certainly say about medieval wedding gowns is that they’re completely distinctive and wonderfully unique in appearance. Right from the corseted bodice down to the beautiful trumpet sleeves.

2. Sync With Your Venue

Medieval dresses can be worn for any wedding. If it’s the dress you want, it’s the dress you should have. However, if you’re lucky enough to be marrying in a historical setting such as a castle or an abbey, a medieval dress will certainly enhance that coveted medieval style.

Castle setting like this one provides an amazing ambience. Not sure if that dress would have been in medieval times, but we love it nonetheless!

3. The Romance Of It All

There’s just something about this style of dress that screams romance. Perhaps its the sense of enduring tradition, maybe the sumptuous fabrics and floaty skirts or simply their fairytale-like appearance. Whichever reason you most identify with, you’re sure to feel the love in the air the moment you slip into a medieval wedding gown.

Which Gown Style is for You?

Whether you’re going for a completely traditional take on medieval or a slightly more updated version, there are many beautiful gown variations out there to choose from.

Traditional

A traditional medieval gown is likely to be jewel-toned in colour with a dramatic, voluminous skirt and a corseted bodice. This is perfect if you’re looking to embody the classic look of a medieval bride, if your wedding is medieval-themed or you’re simply wanting to move away from a white gown and go for a bolder bridal look.

Modern

If you love the idea of a medieval-style dress, but the reality of a replica is too much for you, opt for a more contemporary design with medieval influences. Identify the elements that you love (such as gorgeous trumpet sleeves), and subtly incorporate them into your blended bridal look.

7 Medieval Style Wedding Gowns

Now, on to the dresses! Though it’s a time long passed, there are a great number of wedding dress designers out there designing gowns that truly capture and celebrate the medieval style. Below are seriously stunning examples, including my top picks for each style.

1. Fairy Tale Style Medieval Wedding Dress

by CelticFusionDesign

fairy tale medieval wedding dress

Marrying the love of your life should feel like the final page of a fairy tale — with the gown of your dreams to match! Live your happily ever after in this stunning dress by Etsy seller CelticFusionDesign.

2. Modern Medieval Wedding Dress

by Azazie

Modern Medieval Wedding Dress

If you’re wishing for a subtle medieval touch on an otherwise modern gown, wedding boutiques like Azazie are a good place to shop. This breathtaking diamond white gown is one of my top picks.

3. Sleeveless Medieval Wedding Dress

by WeddingBeautifulDay

sleeveless wedding dress

A spring/summer wedding or a ceremony abroad deserves a dress like this beautiful lace-up corset gown. It has all of the beloved features of a medieval wedding dress, but with the coolness of a sleeveless bodice.

4. Game of Thrones White Meereen Dress + Cape

by Hidylle

Game of Thrones White Dress, dragon necklace, cape

Game of Thrones is the epitome of medieval fantasy looks. One of my favorite shows of all time may have come to an end, but that doesn’t mean you can’t relive Game of Thrones in all its glory on your wedding day. This handmade replica can be paired with a statment necklace for a stunning look.

Or, for that matter, wear this gown at a party around Halloween time and all eye will be on you – Mother of Dragons!

5. Galadriel Elvish Style Medieval Gown

Brides on a budget needn’t rule out this opulent looking style. Take this particular design from 5 star Etsy seller CostureroReal — an equally beautiful medieval design for a fraction of the cost.

The History Of Medieval Weddings & Gowns

Amazingly, the basic structure of a medieval wedding day has long endured and is very similar to our weddings today. A religious blessing, the exchanging of vows and rings, followed by a feast with friends and family. That being said, there are some interesting practices that while not unrecognisable, haven’t exactly stood the test of time either!

Announcements

Today you may wish to announce your engagement in the local paper or, more likely, spread the word all over Facebook and Instagram! In medieval times, however, a notice would be placed on the church doors for the whole town to see.

The Cake

If you’re dreaming of a delicious tiered vanilla cake with pure white frosting and an adorable bride and groom topper, it’s lucky you’re marrying in the 21st century. Medieval couples would instead be gifted with a pile of small buns stacked into a pile over which they would have to share a kiss. A successful smooch was an indication of a long and happy marriage, adorable!

The Gown

Forget those crisp white and ivory gowns, ladies of years gone by would be decked out in jewel-coloured dresses for their big day. Blue was also a popular colour believed to symbolise the brides’ innocence and purity. If you hadn’t already guessed it, this is where the blue in some old, new, borrowed and blue originated!

The Hair

Love those oh-so-natural curls styled with a bohemian flower crown? Well, we all have brides of medieval times to thank for that. Their hair too was traditionally styled loosely and adorned with flowers. Now that’s what I call timeless style!

What Does A Medieval Wedding Look Like

This is a question with a few different answers. Your wedding day can take on many different forms, depending on whether you opt for a historically faithful interpretation of a medieval ceremony or a day simply influenced by this theme.

Introduce the traditions listed above to add a fun historical element. Additionally, opt for dramatic medieval decor and have guests sit around a long banquet-style table for dinner. You’ll feel instantly transported to another time to celebrate your union!

Taken from this medieval castle wedding

Alternatively, incorporate a few select traditions into your day that speak to you. For example, try blue cuffs on your dress or style your hair with a traditional flower crown. Combining these elements with your medieval gown will give a classical twist on an otherwise modern wedding day.

Whether you’re definitely opting for a medieval gown, or you’re slightly inspired to discover a more unique look for your wedding day, I hope your eyes are open to something new and exciting as you search for the one.

We are certain you’ll look perfect on your wedding day, whichever gown you choose. May all of the love and luck in the world come your way!

12 Skull Earrings to Match your Style

Gone are the days when you could only wear skull earrings at parties leading up to October 31st or Carnival. The skull trend used to be reserved for Halloween or dress-up occasions, but in recent years has picked up steam as a mainstream trend.

Skull designs have been spotted on items such as t-shirts, bags, and even scarves. This year, L.A. fashion week saw skulls walking down runways on wide-leg pants and belted jackets.

I love the idea of incorporating a little skull flavor accessories into your life – specifically earrings. It’s the perfect way to add a little unexpected “badass vibe” into your look. From classic feminine pearls to timeless diamonds and edgy oxidized finishes, there is a skull earring to match your personal style.

Inspiration Behind the Trend

It’s no secret that the 90s have been making a re-appearance in fashion and design. If you’re old enough to have been around through that decade, you will remember the notorious Jack Skeleton from The Nightmare Before Christmas animated movie. His character sparked the beginning of many peoples’ love affair with skull designs on everything from head to toe.

Skulls also became increasingly popular alongside the boho fashion movement. Suddenly we began seeing brands carrying colorful prints of skulls with floral crowns or sugar skulls on their apparel and accessories.

And then, of course, skulls have always been a central symbol in rock, heavy metal, and punk rock scenes. Everyone from Guns N’ Roses to Steppenwolf to Grateful Dead have featured skulls on the covers of their albums and merch.

How to Wear Skull Earings

If you’re hoping to make a big statement, choose a pair of earrings that are a little larger in size, longer in length and show more texture and detail. A pair of dangling threader earrings or some textured hand-carved sugar skull earrings would be a great choice. Don’t be shy to go all out with makeup and hair, especially if on your way to a party or special event.

If you’re looking for more of a day-to-day look and a pair that you can wear more frequently, choose a smaller delicate set of stud earrings. From a distance, these will look like regular silver or gold stud earrings. A glance up close will reveal gorgeous design and detail. I love the inclusion of a few gemstones to sparkle and catch the light. Wear your hair up or half up to allow these earrings to shine.

5 Tea Length Wedding Dresses – Affordable and Stylish!

You may ask, “What exactly is a tea length wedding dress?“

And no, it has nothing to do with the time it takes to spill tea all over the dress!

Brides wearing tea length wedding dress and red heels

Though there are many beautiful variations, the basic definition is a dress with a hem that falls below the knee and above the ankle. Aside from this classic and defining feature, the options are pretty much endless! Examples include long sleeves, strapless, lace bodices, or tulle skirts. No matter your individual style, there is a tea length gown with your name on it.

Reasons to Wear a Tea Length Dress

If it’s not a style you’ve considered before, prepare to be swayed as the reasons to leave those floor-length gowns behind are revealed.

Summertime or an Outdoor Setting

For all of the summer brides out there, tea length wedding dresses are an absolute dream. Not only will you look sensational, but the shorter dress length is a welcome comfort in high temperatures.

The Shape

No matter what dress a bride chooses, she’ll be unquestionably beautiful! For many, a tea-length dress is that style — largely thanks to the flattering shape. With a cinched waistline and voluminous skirt, they’re wonderful for highlighting an hourglass figure. Additionally, the shorter hemline is ideal for petite brides.

Tea Length wedding dress shape

Finally, if your legs are a favourite asset, don’t hide them away beneath a floor-length gown! Go for a tea length gown and feel fabulous from morning until night.

Your Footwear

Birdcage with Lace Applique

There’s no point in having the most stunning heels ever seen if nobody gets to see them! Tea-length dresses are a chance to shine in the shoe department and showcase a fabulous pair of designer shoes.

Veils And Tea Length Wedding Dresses

With a full gown, there’s never really an issue regarding the length of your veil. The bridal veil can be as long as you like, and it’s unlikely to compete with the length of your dress. However, with a dress that’s tea length, make sure your veil doesn’t steal focus from the style. Opting for something shoulder or waist length is simply perfect.

Shoes to Wear With a Tea Length Dress

As mentioned, one hugely popular reason brides decide to wear a tea-length dress is the ability to put footwear front and centre. If you’re a bride with a love of fabulous footwear (aren’t we all!?), this is your chance to wow guests and make the most of showing off those glorious heels!

Let’s take a look at gorgeous shoe options to go with your tea-length dress.

A Pop Of Colour

Now that shoes will be a huge part of your bridal look, why not go for something truly memorable and add a pop of colour to the ensemble. A brilliant pair of heeled royal blue pumps or a romantic red peep toes could give your wedding look a wow factor!

Classic Bridal Heels

A traditional pair of white or ivory heels is the dream for many brides, and there are so many show-stopping designs to choose from. Complete your look with simple heels that match your dress for a chic and seamless bridal ensemble.

Wear beautiful ballet Flats with tea length wedding dress

Beautiful Ballet Flats

If you’re not one for heels, you needn’t wear them just because you think you should. Comfort is a huge part of feeling good on your wedding day! Ballet flats by Tieks are a viable option, especially as they come in so many gorgeous colors. Think Audrey Hepburn and opt for vintage vibes with a classic pair of pumps.

Something Special

Remember that pair of designer heels you’ve kept your eye on, but had no occasion special enough to splurge? Hello wedding day! This is the ideal opportunity to show them off and to treat yourself to something extra special for walking down the aisle.

10 Bamboo Earring Design Ideas – Will they Bring You Good Luck?

In this article, we’ll explore the resurgence of bamboo-inspired earrings. Styles like hip-hop-inspired, chunky hoops, and minimalist-dangle earrings (you won’t want to miss out on this look!), all made the cut.

bamboo forest painting

In fashion and design, it goes without saying that trends tend to repeat. Even when decades span in between, we often see a re-visiting of a certain era when it comes to what’s trending. Bamboo earrings are no exception to this rule. A “blast from the past”, when nature meets style and elegance in a set of earrings, everybody wins.

If you were around during the 90s and early 2000s, you may remember earrings being part of the rap and hip-hop music scene. Artists like Destiny’s Child (helloooo Beyonce!) and Rihanna each sported large bamboo hoops in their music videos and on red carpets.

Fun fact? The extra thick bamboo-style hoop earrings are also nicknamed “Door Knocker Earrings” for their resemblance to, well, a door knocker! If bold isn’t your vibe, don’t worry—gold hoops and huggies are having their moment too. From sleek everyday huggies to sculptural gold hoops, there’s no shortage of modern takes on this classic style.

The expression goes “everything old is new again” rang true when we saw a revisiting of this smoking hot earring trend decades later. Today, bamboo earrings are being worn in all shapes and sizes – from the more traditional thick gold hoops to delicate, small huggie-style earrings. You might even stumble upon handcrafted or vintage bamboo-inspired stud and dangle earrings.

Huge fashion houses like Gucci picked up on this lovely look. Gold bamboo earrings were seen on runways and in high-end department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue.

Bamboo Symbolism

Bamboo has long been known to bring good luck and also symbolizes love, happiness, growth, and good health. The bamboo plant itself represents both the ying and the yang of balance. It grows strong and tall, and also bends gently with the wind. Whether you’re craving more balance in your life or could use some good fortune, what could be better than wearing a lucky charm on your earlobes?

In China, bamboo is symbolic of virtue and harmony between nature and human beings. Beauty and elegance are also representative qualities of bamboo in Asian cultures. Its deep roots signify persistence and steadiness while the hollow center with a polished exterior indicates modesty.

How to Wear Bamboo Earrings

Thicker hoop styles can make a big statement. When choosing a large, chunky set of hoops consider keeping it simple with hair and neckpieces. Pair with some gold bangles and a more casual outfit for a chic look. Or take it all the way with a 90s inspired look from head to toe. This look is great for nights out on the town and events where you want to stand out from the crowd.

Thin hoops, smaller huggies and dangle earrings look great with hair up and a complimentary chain and pendant combination. These more versatile options can be worn to work or dressed up for semi-formal or even formal events. Think cocktails after work, baby or wedding showers, and dinner parties.

I’ve browsed through hundreds of styles to bring you the best pairs of bamboo design earrings. Here are my top ten finalists!

5 Lace Wedding Dresses to Fall Hopelessly In Love With

As you begin the search for your perfect gown, it’s not hard to see why lace wedding dresses are such a desirable choice for a modern bride. The intricate needlework alone is enough to get me swooning over these charming creations. With so many utterly beautiful options out there, how do you even begin to find the one that’s perfect for you?

We’ve narrowed the search and come up with our top lacy picks in varying styles and also some fabulous tips on how to choose, bustle, and style your dream lace dress!

Lace Wedding Dresses: Vintage & Modern Styles

Once you’ve set your heart on a lace wedding dress, finding exactly the right style is the trickiest part. Perhaps you’d like a dress made entirely of lace or maybe subtle accents are your preference. Here we’ll take a look at a few of the most favoured lace types to help you decide.

Chantilly Lace

Whether on a structured column dress or floaty boho gown, Chantilly lace is an eternally elegant choice. Recognisable by its light finish, the detailed contrasts between light and shade on each floral motif will create the perfect overlay or sleeves for your wedding gown.

Guipure Lace

Guipure lace is most known for its mesh-less construction and how each motif is connected by plaits or bars of thread as opposed to a layer of netting. This results in a considerably heavier finish yet it creates the perfect overlay for your dress.

Embroidered Lace

This lace is usually created atop a layer of soft tulle. Once the lace motifs, floral or otherwise, have been created the lace can then be adorned with crystals, pearls or another type of beading to finish. This is ideal for brides who love a little extra sparkle!

How To Bustle Lace Overlay Wedding Dresses

So, you’ve chosen the perfect dress and you’re thinking of bustles. Firstly, what a bustle even is and what it does. Secondly, how on earth you fasten a bustle ensuring it still looks beautiful. Lastly if you even need one for your chosen gown?! Let’s take a look…

What is a bustle?

A bustle is a feature created on your dress to gather up an extended train or extra fabric that glides on the floor. This is perfect for your post-ceremony look to greet your guests and dance the night away!

The two types of bustle most frequently used are the French/under bustle and the American/over bustle.

Under Bustle – Is the more voluminous option which tucks underneath the skirt creating tidy folds of one, two or three.

Over Bustle – Gathers up the train and fastens it over the skirt. If you’re looking not to disturb or lose any detail in your beautiful lace train or overlay, this is a great option!

How do I fasten my bustle?

Now this one’s simple, you don’t!

As you’ll be the one wearing this beautiful dress, you’ll need to enlist the help of a willing bridesmaid or maid of honour when it comes time to bustle. Whether your dress uses ribbons or buttons to fasten together, your helper should know how it works ahead of time.

Bustles can be notoriously fiddly in their aim to remain discreet! Inviting them to a fitting or an at-home trial run will undoubtedly save any time consuming fastening issues on the big day.

Gorgeous Styling for Lace Wedding Dresses

Below, let’s go through a few beautiful choices to perfectly complement your stunning lace gown.

Bridal Veil

There are thousands of options when it comes to your veil. Here are a couple of helpful tips to get you started!

If your dress is entirely made from lace, choose either a plain or lightly lace-edged veil so as not to steal focus from the intricacies of your dress. However, if your dress only has accents of lace on the sleeves or hem, for example, feel free to be a little more adventurous with a full lace veil to tie your look together.

Whichever you choose, ensuring the colours of your lace match one another is essential even if the patterns themselves aren’t identical.

Bridal Shoes

The detailed appearance of lace is often best matched with simpler textures so as not to make your bridal look too busy. With this in mind, classic satin heeled pumps will always look effortlessly chic paired with a lace wedding gown.

Bridal Hair Accessories

As with your shoes, simple accessories are always an elegant option. Luckily for us, lace pairs perfectly with crystals, flowers, and pearls. So whether you choose a floral crown, a diamond-encrusted vintage hair slide, or a pearl headband, it’s likely to be a perfect match.

5 Romantic Red Wedding Dresses – Yes, you can wear red down the aisle!

“A red wedding dress? On my big day?!”

I hear ya.

After years imagining your wedding day down to the last detail, it’s strange to picture yourself in anything other than white. But, I have a sneaking suspicion that as you read on and discover the dresses to come, you may develop a new picture.

Everyone is seated, the music begins to play, the crowd and your future spouse turn for your entrance. And in you glide in the most eternatlly romantic red wedding gown imaginable!

Meaning of A Red Wedding Dress

There’s an endless list of reasons you may decide to stand out in a red dress on your wedding day. Maybe it’s symbolic, a cultural influence, or it could simply be a personal preference. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular meanings behind red wedding dresses:

  • Cultural Influence – In some cultures, choosing to wear red is tied to tradition and the belief in what the colour symbolises. For example, Hindu and Sikh brides may choose or be asked to wear red for their wedding, as it represents fertility and prosperity within the marriage. Traditionally in China, brides are dressed in red, which symbolises good fortune, luck, and happiness.
  • Symbolising something special – Seeing red brings an immediate association with love, passion, and romance. There’s no better time to embrace these emotions than when marrying the one you love.
  • A chance to stand out – For many brides, a white gown just won’t cut it. If you’re the type of person who loves something a little different and unique, red is an ideal choice.
  • Red is your favourite color – Sometimes it’s as simple as totally adoring a certain color to wear on your wedding day. If that color is red, go for it and don’t look back!

A Red Wedding Dress, For Me?

The short answer to the question of whether you should wear a red dress or not — absolutely yes!

What you choose to wear on your wedding day is 100% your decision. There’s truly no reason to throw red out of your long list of glamorous options!

It’s true, red is not the tamest of colours. The thought of dressing in from head to toe in red can be daunting, especially on your wedding day!

Fear not. It’s all about finding the right shade and the right cut for your complexion, hair colour, and figure. Once that’s decided, a red dress can tick all the boxes. It’s dramatic, memorable and, though it may be something a few more brides are considering these days, it’s pretty unique!

In terms of hair colour, there are a few general rules of thumb when choosing a red dress. These are by no means set in stone, and you should feel free to experiment with red hues. However, it may help you get started!

Red Heads

Please do not be afraid of this colour! You’ve likely been taught to avoid it at all costs, but a red dress can work for you, and steal the show! Generally, brighter red dresses look best on cooler shades of red hair. Whereas opting for a darker dress will best complement those with warmer shades.

Blondes

This colour was practically made for you! From warm and golden to cool and icy, red complements and elevate lighter locks perfectly. Try softer reds if your hair is very fair and choose a richer hue for warmer honey blondes.

Brunettes

You can really afford to experiment with red dresses! Colors like striking apple red, luxurious maroon, and burgundy shades all look incredible.

Black Hair

Much like brunettes, we would highly recommend trying on a few deeper shades of red to give an overall picture of elegance and drama to your bridal look!
