Yellow & DIY Wedding with Burlap Cake Topper
We hope you’re in the mood for a super cute vintage DIY wedding today because that’s exactly what we’ve got! Josh and Ashley planned a beautiful DIY affair shot by Ever Whim Photographs. Ashley calls their wedding “a community event” because their family and friends really came together to help them pull this wedding off, and it all turned out beautifully! Splashes of yellow décor and details highlight the wedding – from flowers to scarves and yellow shoes for bridesmaids. The wedding cake with yellow flowers and burlap bow cake topper is such a wonderful and simple DIY idea.
Ashley made her dress with the help of her friend Brandi and her sister Devlin. It turned out so well, and for just $25! We love the cute fabric flowers they added to the bodice. Ashley says, “Don’t be afraid to just go for it. You may find you’re better at something than you think. And be willing to make mistakes. Halfway through the dress-making we noticed that we had sewed the bottom on inside out. We just cut it off at the bodice and sewed it correctly the second time. No one would have even noticed!”
We LOVE how all the bridesmaids wore different yellow shoes, tights, and yellow scarves! Ashley and Josh couldn’t figure out the colors they wanted for their wedding until Ashley found her shoes at a Shoe Fly in Boulder, CO. Those shoes were the inspiration for the entire color scheme of the wedding!
Groomsmen in sweaters–genius!
Ashley’s mom painted the picture of the thumbprint tree. So cute! We love the burlap bunting too.
This ceremony backdrop is such a great way to add some fun to an indoor space! Josh’s parents cut out the ampersand from plywood and then mounted it and painted it yellow. It now sits in Josh and Ashley’s home!
Josh proposed by sending Ashley on a scavenger hunt around downtown Denver. At the end he had a friend write the lyrics to the song “Umbrellas” by Sleeping at Last in chalk right next to the Museum of Modern Art (where they had their first date). To incorporate that story into their decor, Josh and Ashley bought old sheets at the Goodwill and then stenciled on the lyrics to the song. How sweet!
The adorable button cookies were made by Ashley’s mom.
We love this wedding cake, especially the burlap bow cake topper. So perfect for a budget-friendly wedding, and totally DIY-able.
Favorite Moment of the Day
Bride’s Comments: “Josh and I cut the cake (which was made by my co-worker at Starbucks) and being the ornery kids we are, we shoved the cake into each other’s faces. However, I hit Josh so perfectly that the cake went up his nose, and as a natural instinct he leaned away from me accidentally running into the table behind him. Wouldn’t you know, that table was where our cake was sitting. It was a “slow-mo” kind of moment like at a basketball game when the star player is about to make the winning shot before the buzzer goes off. It was inevitable that the cake was going to hit the floor, which it did, and the crowd went wild! It was priceless. Lesson: Things WILL NOT go according to plan, but those “accidents” can turn out to be the most memorable and most talked about moments of a wedding.”
Advice for Future Brides
“Don’t get caught up in ‘this wedding is all about me’ cause really, it’s not. There will never be a day where the most important people you love are gathered in one place. Without the family and friends who had their hands in our wedding in some way, it would not have been the same. Our relationship blossomed in the midst of this community of people, and our marriage has been no different. It is a HUGE commitment, but one that will endure the test of time when friends and family and Jesus are a part of it. The best advice I ever got was, ‘Don’t do life alone’. As Timshel says, ‘You are not alone in this, as brothers we will stand and will hold your hand, hold your hand’.”
