Wedding Postcard Questions and Etiquette
We get plenty of questions about how to appropriately word a wedding thank you card. Our official position is not to overthink it. Here are some commonly asked questions about writing your wedding thank you’s and a few etiquette pointers, too.
Like any other thank you note, the longer you wait to send it, the less impactful it becomes. Send them out as soon as you can, preferably right after you settle down after your honeymoon.
(Unless life throws you a curveball or two, and you have to put it off.)
Remember, a belated thank you is better than no thank you at all. Even if it takes a while, better late than never. That said…
Simply put, you’re sorry it took so long. Then if you’d like to offer a quick explanation, by all means, do so, but most of the time, it’s not really necessary.
This one isn’t quite as cut-and-dried. The general consensus over here is that yes, it’s kinda rude not to send out thank you notes. A thank you is in order, not only for gifts but also to thank your guests for attending your wedding.
They don’t have to be, but it’s always nice to acknowledge each guest specifically. Mention how much you enjoyed their company in specific ways or how much fun it was to cut a rug on the dance floor together. That way, your guests will know that you remember what they got you and how they helped make your big day special.
Postcards are all about brevity, of course, so keeping it short and sweet is the name of the game. For example:
“We’re so blessed that we got to share our wedding day with you, and we love the (insert gift here) you gave us! We’ll get lots of good use out of it – thanks again!”
or
“Thanks so much for coming to our wedding, and thanks a million for the (insert gift here)! It was so thoughtful of you, (Spouse) and I can’t wait to use it!”
You get the idea.
If they got you a gift, thank them for it and let them know they were missed at the wedding. (Not in a guilt-inducing way.) Maybe something like:
“The (insert gift here) yousent is amazing; thank you so much! Even though we didn’t get the pleasure of your company at the wedding, (spouse) and I look forward to seeing you very soon!”
Thanks a Million!
Some say that expressing gratitude is a surefire road to happiness, and we couldn’t agree more.
Writing out wedding thank you postcards may seem kind of like a tedious chore. But once you begin to reflect on how much each person means to you who celebrated and contributed to your big day, we predict it’ll become an enjoyable ritual.
Congrats, newlywed!
