“Eek!” is the sound I made when I saw Jake and Kim’s DIY wedding. They are a couple after my own heart – they are fabulously crafty and made their own invitations along with the decor!
Here is what Kim said about her wedding: “My husband and I have always been inspired by anything outdoors and woodsy. We’ve never been huge fans of very formal and polished looks, so we tried to make every detail eclectic, fun, wild, care free, and unique.”
“I incorporated my something old in with my bouquet by using lace from my mother’s wedding veil to wrap around the stems of my flowers. Also, my mom’s veil was attached to a flower garland and my florist took some of those flowers and intertwined them with my own in my bouquet. It was such a special addition!”
“My husband and are DIY enthusiasts, so many of the details from our wedding were hand made by us, our family, or our friends. Jake and I hand painted and made our invitations (and had them printed at a close family friend’s print shop), I painted the big wooden signs, Jake constructed our cake topper, we both made our table numbers, the hair clips in the girls hair (each one is unique), and the seating chart wooden pegs. Our friends helped with gluing together the ribbon garland that hung down the aisle for our ceremony. Our family helped with the doily garland that hung in ceremony area, Jake’s dad build us our cupcake stands, the wooden arbor that sat above our sweet heart table, and assembled the stump jar centerpieces. Our wedding was truly a collaborative event which had our own personal touch on every detail.”
“My husband and I had a budget for our wedding and we made sure to stick with it. For us, we chose the one area that was the most important to us (photography) and chose to invest the most there. The rest of the details fell into place (with the help of DIY projects of course). So my advice to future brides would be to first sit down and prioritize what is important to you as a couple (whether it’s the food, the venue, the photographer), and invest in that first. For the rest of the details if you search hard you can find affordable options. Don’t be afraid to ask around and to seek out those opportunities. It is totally possible to have a beautiful wedding that you will remember forever without breaking the bank!”
