Wedding Story
With Shayla having family in Columbia, Shayla and Brett got married the first Saturday of November at 701 Whaley in Downtown Columbia. 701 Whaley, a restored historic building in the heart of downtown, boasts a unique experience to all guests.
Bride’s Comments: “I wanted my wedding to look like fall. I love everything about the fall season and when I visualized my wedding I wanted a navy and wine color palette with pops of blush pinks and greenery.
“I also incorporated rustic themed items like lanterns throughout our venue for decoration. I’m very happy with how it all came together so nicely. I had my cousin marry us which was special because I tried to include our whole family in the wedding which was really important to me.
I didn’t want a traditional wedding, but kept the part of the bride and groom not seeing each other until walking down the aisle.
“The first look with my dad was emotional and one of my favorite moments.”
Bridal Q & A
Q: Let’s talk wedding decor
“I feel like for the most part our decor was simple. We had our tables decorated with different floral arrangements including tall arrangements, short arrangements, and then tables with lanterns that were decorated.
“We had string lights draping from the ceiling and we included greenery in the ceremony and on signs. What I really liked about our wedding was all the candles and lighting throughout the venue on tables and in the windows. All of our signs in our wedding were DIY. My sister in law actually made all of them for us!”
Q: What were the florals like in your wedding?
“All of our decor was basically flowers other than the lanterns and candles. I loved our flowers! They were a mix of greenery, blush, white and wine colored flowers in our centerpieces and bouquets”
Q: Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)?
“For our wedding favors we had Carmel and candy apples on a beautiful three tier table. I loved our wedding favors because again it reminded me of fall and it was a sweet treat our guest could take home with them!
“I also liked picking different songs for our bridal party to walk into the reception. It gave everybody a good laugh and was also a lot of fun. Our Dj did a really good job as well he asked us before he did everything. He basically ran the reception.|
Q: Let’s talk fashion
“I knew before I even got engaged what I wanted my bridesmaids dresses to look like so that part was easy for me. The dresses were simple but looked great on everybody.
“My dress on the other hand was very hard for me. When I went to get my dress I almost lost hope because everything I was putting on I didn’t like. Then when I put on my dress I loved it. The beading and lace looked kind of vintage to me. I actually added the belt to my dress but the seamstress did such a good job you couldn’t even tell it wasn’t originally apart of the dress. The dress had so much detail on the back which is a big reason why I got it.
“Even though I loved my dress, Pinterest had me second guessing it a lot. So when you find your dress do not look on Pinterest anymore!
“The guys were also easy. My husband and I agreed on the navy suits and they also looked great on everyone.”
Q: How did you meet?
“Brett and I met our freshman year in college. We were introduced because his roommate was dating my roommate. Our first date was actually Valentine’s Day in 2013.
“He proposed to me at pretty place on November 25, 2016. He told me we were going to the biltmore house with his family but had to stop by pretty place for his sister to take a picture there for her school project. Brett and I went to take a picture together as well and I remember feeling his heart pounding so fast and then the next thing I know he is down on his knee! Best feeling ever!”
Q: What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?
“I was actually just really nervous about walking down the aisle. I convinced myself I was going to fall or something but of course I didn’t. But I think my favorite moment was during our vows. Brett and I wrote our own vows and I was so nervous to know what he was going to say, but they were so sweet and I’ll remember that forever!
Q: Do you have any wedding planning advice to share with other couples?
“I feel like the best advice I could give for wedding planning is stick to what you know you want for your special day. I got so much advice during planning my wedding and that is great and all but sometimes it actually added more stress because I started trying to make everybody else happy. Enjoy the planning because I hated it while I was doing it, but missed it afterwards.
“I have been married for three months now and I absolutely love married life! My advice would be communication — it’s so important and can eliminate so many issues!”
