All About Male Engagement Rings
What is a Male Engagement Ring? How is it different from a wedding band?
It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about men’s or women’s styles – an engagement ring, also known as a proposal ring, is traditionally given as a symbol of commitment upon the proposal.
It doesn’t necessarily have to look different from a wedding band, but usually it does. We’re not sure why that’s a thing, but we’re guessing it has something to do with some stuffy tradition of betrothal.
Not that we don’t love that custom. It means more rings for us to shop for and more guys wearing engagement rings!
What do men’s engagement rings look like?
A men’s engagement ring can look like whatever you think fits his style and individuality!
Like we said above, bucking tradition is sort of the name of the game when it comes to picking out an engagement ring for your man. Hence, no law says it has to look like anything but a symbol of your love.
Who Should Buy the Male Engagement Ring?
Traditionally speaking, one half of the partnership buys the other half’s ring suite. We think that’s kind of nice, seeing as it’s like the ultimate gift to show you love each other.
Also, it’s hard to surprise someone with an engagement ring if you use their credit card to buy it.
On Which Hand/Finger Do you Wear the Male Engagement Ring?
The hand you wear an engagement ring on varies depending upon cultural tradition.
In some cultures, engagement rings are worn on the right hand, then moved to the left on the wedding day. In others, the engagement ring stays on the left hand along with the wedding ring.
Celebrities Seen With Man-gagement Rings
Check out pics of Charlie Sheen, Michael Bublé (whose wife is from Argentina, where it’s traditional for a man to wear an engagement ring), and Osi Umenyiora. Also, David Otunga, Johnny Depp, and Ed Sheeran.
You’ll notice all those handsome fellas have sported beautiful engagement rings to signal their “taken” status.
Male Engagement Ring Buying Considerations For YOU
What matters most when it comes to selecting a men’s engagement ring? The same things that matter when choosing a women’s engagement ring: durability, materials, and style!
Durability
Everyone wants an engagement ring that lasts forever, but often, durability is only as guaranteed as the lifestyle of the wearer. Meaning that the more active your man is, the more likely he is to do some damage to the ring.
However, there are plenty of rings designed to hold up to all kinds of abuse. Silicone is the choice of athletes and guys with manual-heavy jobs. Suppose you’re not in the rubber camp? In that case, tungsten is another excellent choice for takin’ care of business without breaking the ring.
Material
Of course, there are plenty of traditional silver and gold wedding and engagement bands out there. They’re classic.
But when it comes to materials for men’s engagement rings, you’ll find a massive variety of choices. The sky’s the limit. Literally – there are wedding rings for men made from meteorites!
If your guy is the off-the-beaten-path sort, a variety of wood wedding bands are ripe for the picking, too.
You’ll see unconventional metals like Damascus, titanium, and cobalt making a stunning appearance on men’s hands around the world.
Stones
Diamonds and emeralds and opals, oh my! These are just a few of the sparkly gems you’ll find on our favorite men’s engagement rings, and often, they’re what makes them distinctive.
Take care to pick your stones carefully, though. Once again, if you’ve got a guy whose lifestyle includes getting physical regularly, keep it tough. Diamonds and moissanite are great choices for durable rings.
While they’re stunning, gemstones like lapis lazuli and turquoise aren’t so hard.
Want more information about how to choose the stone that’s right for your ring? Check out the Gemological Institute of America’s website (GIA for short).
Personal Style
Picking an engagement ring that reflects your sweetheart’s personal style is what makes the shopping part fun!
Whether he’s flashy and loves the spotlight, is always on-trend, or would just as soon keep it simple and classic, there’s something for every groom. And if it isn’t out there, there are plenty of skilled jewelers ready to craft your one-of-a-kind ring.
The only restrictions are your imagination and (potentially) your budget.
Male Engagement Rings To Put Some Sparkle In Your Proposal
1. Artemis Diamond Accented Ring
Understated but interesting, this is a great example of how a masculine ring doesn’t have to be plain and stuffy. We think it’ll pair really well with any style of wedding band you’d like to stack with it!
Comes in white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum.
2. Sterling Silver Moon Surface Ring
by Etsy: BySilverStone
If your man is an astronomy buff, he’ll be over the moon when you propose with this sterling silver band! It’s so unique, it’ll attract all the attention he can handle. And the more compliments he gets on the ring, the more people will know he’s yours.
Swoon.
3. Yellow Gold & Emerald Ring
by Angara
An understated emerald is the star of this engagement ring, making it an excellent choice for the guy who loves some bling without blinding everyone. Besides, there’s no pairing quite like shiny yellow gold and sparkling emeralds.
4. Silicone Engagement Ring
by Halo
We’re big fans of silicone wedding rings at my house (for both him and me) for their durability and comfort. Not to mention they’re so low-maintenance.
This one is classic black with a yellow gold underside – perfect alone or paired with a yellow gold wedding band on the big day. It’s also reversible, because some days a man wants to wear black, and others he wants to wear gold. Choices are nice.
5. Hammered Rough Gold Ring
by Etsy: ZadokGold
Reminiscent of ancient royalty, we think this one’s good enough for Cleopatra to give her Mark Antony. This handcrafted ring is the perfect balance of masculinity: hammered for ruggedness, but the diamond solitaire gives it a softer edge.
6. Wood & Opal Men’s Engagement Ring
by Etsy: JapaneseMelody
We love unique and unconventional rings of any kind, so this stunning wood engagement ring immediately earned a place on our list. The combination of wood and opal with shining tungsten gives it an organic, earthy glow.
It comes with the perfect wooden box to present when you get down on one knee to pop the question, too.
7. Baguette Diamonds Men’s Ring
by Leibish
Now, THIS ring has some bling! If your boyfriend loves the finer things and likes to show it, this is the ring for him! Those glittering baguettes will complement any center stone you choose with eye-catching style.
Comes in your choice of platinum or 18K gold in sizes 9 – 12 1/2
8. Stainless Steel Clear CZ Statement Ring
by Blue Steel
Another flashy choice, only the biggest personalities with serious swagger can pull this one off every day. It would certainly be drool-worthy on a man in a tux. Just sayin’.
But don’t let the glamorous front fool you! The setting is tough stainless steel, titanium, and tungsten – perfect for bar-to-black-tie wear.
9. Opal Signet Ring
by Etsy: Twistedpendant
Opals (not to be confused with moonstone) are mysterious gemstones. The official birthstone of October, rumor has it that they’re bad luck for anyone who wears one except those born in the month famous for Halloween.
We’re not sure who said it first, but we’re pretty sure it’s a bunch of malarkey.
Regardless, the mesmerizing multicolored opacity of the opal makes a stunning men’s signet engagement ring.
Available in your choice of silver or 18K gold-plated, sizes 5-12
10. Sapphire & Platinum Ring
by Etsy: SapphireJewelStudio
Modern and minimalist are the adjectives that best describe this platinum everyday wear ring. A stunning blue sapphire is nestled within the band, giving it a flash of colorful personality while maintaining an air of sophistication.
11. Black Titanium & Diamond Ring
by Tiffany
If you have to ask, you can’t afford it, right? We didn’t call client care to find out the deets about this dream ring (nor does anyone we know already have one), but it’s easy to guess how much a standard 3.36-carat Tiffany ring might be.
It’s sexy, it’s classy, it’s Tiffany. What more do you need to know?
12. Princess-Cut Solitaire Diamond
by Sun Jewelry
A ring with subtle sparkle fits any occasion! We love the angular setting design, and from pear-shaped to cushion, you can choose the cut that suits your beloved’s style.
We happen to really like the princess cut because of its art-deco vibe.
13. Barcelona 14K Rose Gold Ring
by Equalli
Onyx and rose gold are a striking combination as is. But add sapphires in every color under the rainbow, and you’ve got a ring with some serious personality!
If you’re proud to show the world that you’ve managed to rope the man of your dreams, this is the ring for you. (Also, good job roping the man of your dreams.)
14. White Gold & Diamonds Ring
by Angara
Classic with a splash of flair, this combo of white gold and diamonds makes an engagement ring perfect for the discriminating man. We love how the grooved setting suggests a traditional wedding band hidden inside a non-traditional design.
Comes in rose gold, white gold, yellow gold, and platinum in sizes 3-14
15. 18K Yellow Gold Rainbow Austin Ring
Rainbow gemstones sparkle beautifully in a yellow gold setting, but they’ll look just as fab with any setting you choose, from rose gold to platinum! It’s the perfect ring to show off your love with pride for the whole world to see.
Comes in white gold, rose gold, yellow gold, and platinum, fully customizable to fit any size
Male Engagement Ring FAQ
This question pops up a lot. Hopefully, after reading this post, you now know it isn’t. Engagement rings are for anyone who’s engaged. Done and done.
We think an engagement ring/wedding band combo is just as fitting for a man as for a woman. Just keep in mind, size matters. If his engagement ring is wide and his wedding ring is wide, they might be hard to wear together, so plan accordingly!
That all depends upon where you buy it and what it’s made from. For instance, the Tiffany ring on our list is most likely on the, um, pricier side. Conversely, the handsome opal signet ring from Etsy starts out at about $35.
The most common ring size for a man is a size 10, so if you’re attempting to wing it (ring it?), that may be a good guess.
Otherwise, if you want to be sneaky about getting more accurate, trace the circumference of a ring he already has with a pencil. Then, you can compare that with oodles of ring size guides you’ll find online to get a closer estimate.
Google it. There’s a ton out there.
